General :: Is AIDE A Good File System Monitor?

Jun 21, 2011

I am in the process of looking at file integrity checkers. So far I have found AIDE.

1. What are the ups and downs of AIDE?

2. Is it pretty easy to use?

3. Is there any other open source tools that are better than AIDE?

General :: Good Software To Monitor Disk Io , Memory And Cpu Use?

Jul 19, 2011

I'm developing a website. I was wondering if there are any tools out there that make it easy to log and graph usage statistics of how my cpu, memory, disk and network are used.

I need to somehow know when I need to scale up / when I'm going to get problems soon.

I found http://sebastien.godard.pagesperso-orange.fr/
(command line thingy, not so useful because I'd have to write my own graphics and logging layer on top of it..)

Ubuntu :: Is NTFS A Good File System For A Shared Partition Between WinXP

May 30, 2010

Someone on IRC had mentioned they had a shared partition in NTFS, and that Ubuntu could read from it just fine... I wanted to get a second opinion before I did anything. Right now I have a WinXP partition and an Ubuntu partition, and a large NTFS partition in the middle that I'd like to move my /home to.

Ubuntu :: Incorrect File System Space Reported By System Monitor?

Apr 3, 2011

In System Monitor, on the File Systems tab, the "Total", "Available" and "Used" columns don't seem to add up, and the "Used" percentage doesn't seem correct either.

My config:
/dev/sda1 = 80 GB SSD drive, / partition.
/dev/sdb1 = 50 GB FAT32 partition of an external 500 GB USB hard disk.
/dev/sdb2 = remainder of the 500 GB USB hard disk encrypted using luks.

Screenshot: The /dev/sda1 figures don't really add up well, but they're close at least (how you get "50% Used" from any of those figures I don't know!).

However, for /dev/sdb2, they're miles off:
"Free" = 146.2 GiB
"Total" = 409.7 GiB
"Available" = 125.4 GiB
"Used" = 263.5 GiB

[Code]...

General :: Best Mini Distro With Good File Server?

Jan 17, 2010

I like puppy apart from the file manager, you could probably download a different FM from the package manager, but i am looking for a new distro. I know DSL as well and i think it's good but there must be better. I will mainly be using it for 2 reason

a) Recover(backup) files from a windows system i can't boot into
b) To access the net of a system i can't boot into

1) Be under 200MB
2) Fast to boot
3) Have network support including wireless
4) Have sata support and ideally raid support
5) Good file manager
6) As windows like as possible
7) Easy to copy files from HD to usb stick and easy to set permissions .

Fedora :: 11 With Monitor - System - Preferences - Display Shows Unknown Monitor

Oct 16, 2009

I am facing problem with the fresh installation of Fedora 11. (I have moved from Fedora 9). When I try to view videos on ..... or use the Cheese Webcam Booth, I get blurred lines on the screen and I am unable to see any video or pic.

Also I noticed that the when i go to System > Preferences>Display, it shows me UNKOWN MONIOR.

However, if I got to System>Administration>Display and enter the su password, it shows me correct monitor and the graphics driver.

I am not sure if my original is related to the Unknown Monitor.

I also tried to install Nvidia driver but it crashed the xserver and I had remove the driver.

My Monitor is LG 700E and Graphics card is from intel. as I am not able watch any video.

BTW i'm not looking for military/bank security level(I'm willing to accept less)

Programming :: Encryption / Implementing AIDE On Client Machines?

Aug 22, 2010

I need to implement AIDE on my client machines. The builds on these machine are different, so each workstation will have its own specific db generated through running AIDE initially. It is not good practice to just leave the db on the machine, since an "attacker" would be able to view this information. However, at the same time I do not want to pull back over 100 different aide db's to the ftp server and have an update pull each specifically every time I need to run the check. The plan is to leave the db on the client machine, but encrypt it (using public/private keys). I need to be able to encrypt the file on the client machine. I will use a cron on the client to pull an update (from my ftp server) that runs AIDE. This update needs to be able to decrypt the file, use it running AIDE, then re-encrypt the file on the client.

Ubuntu :: Disable Compiz On One Monitor In A Two Monitor System

I have persistent video tearing my second monitor (Mitsubushi HDTV). I have tried everything that was suggested with some improvement. I have no issue with tearing if I add the following to my xorg.conf

Quote:

Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Disable"
EndSection

Is it possible to disable composite for one monitor only and keep it for the other. Or at lease is it possible to have compiz for one monitor only and disable it for the other.

General :: Use The Xscreensaver Gltext To Monitor System Information?

May 26, 2010

I am trying to get the X screensaver gltext to monitor my system temp and maybe some other stats. Writing a script that puts together the stats periodically is no problem, but the main thing I'm running into is that gltext doesn't refresh - whatever text I feed it stays there.So, for example, I run this command:$ /usr/lib/xscreensaver/gltext -text "`cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THRM/temperature`"and get a gltext window showing:temperature:60 CI can manipulate it and format it as necessary, but as my CPU heats up and cools down, it doesn't update, even if I include time variables that do.I have a script that feeds gltext the time as the first line and the temp as the second line - and although the time updates continuously as the time changes, the temperature value remains the same as whenever the screensaver started.

The memory rises over time, when I restarted my computer it was up to 500 - 600 mbps. At the minute after its at 360.

General :: How To Monitor Changed File

Jul 3, 2010

How do I monitor which files have been changed after, say, I run the passwd command? (I know, depending on the options used, it changes /etc/shadow and/or /etc/passwd). But I would like to if there is any clever ways of monitoring this. This is how I do it which is a bit crude, and I have to know which directory to monitor. Before running the command, I run

Code:

for i in $(ls -A) do; md5sum $i >> /tmp/before; done

And after running the command, I run

Code:

for i in $(ls -A) do; md5sum $i >> /tmp/after; done

Then I do a diff to see if any file has been changed

Code:

diff /tmp/{before,after}
