Ubuntu :: Vertical Bar Key Produces < And >

Feb 3, 2010

I have an Asus G51 laptop and for some reason the vertical bar/backslash button produces the greater than/less than symbol (<<>>) instead of the vertical bar. I was wondering what the command is for changing a character that the key produces.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Brasero Produces Corrupt Dvd's?

Mar 1, 2011

I have earlier downloaded many video and picture files to blank DVD's using Brasero with ubuntu. But now most attempts fail. This might be after upgrading to latest ubuntu, but then again maybe this is not the cause, 'cos maybe once in 6 attempts brasero works ok.

It seems to take a long time - maybe 40 mins - for brasero to go through it's job, and the dvds look ok, but cannot read anything. This is a lot longer than when things worked well.

Ubuntu :: Every Single Command Produces An Error

Apr 15, 2010

I went to a help site because I wanted to install an IRC client named seamonkey. I followed the directions step by step, copy and pasting each and every command into my terminal command line as per the instructions. Every single command produced an error. Needless to say, I was unable to install it. What's even more frustrating is I can't even post the url for the site here so someone can see what commands I was using.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: LMMS Produces No Sound Output

Jan 1, 2010

I installed LMMS 0.4.5 on my computer (Ubuntu 9.10), but I'm getting no sound output from the program on ALSA, and whenever I try one of the other options (PulseAudio, OSS, etc.) it reverts to dummy audio. I tried installing JACK to correct the problem, but JACK seems to be giving errors and quitting, and in the past I've always used ALSA for LMMS and it's worked just fine. The problem is local to LMMS, even after a reinstall. My audio output is fine for all other programs I've tested the problem for so far. Also, I just noticed that my instances of LMMS are not being terminated after the windows are being closed...

Notable system info:

Ubuntu 9.10 x86 (kernel 2.6.31-16-generic) installed via Wubi
LMMS 0.4.5 (installed via Ubuntu Software Centre)
3.06 GHz Pentium IV (it looks like dual core)
432 MiB RAM
ATI IXP 584x0 High Definition Audio Controller (according to the lshw command

Ubuntu :: USB Disk Creator Only Produces 'Boot Failure'

Feb 19, 2010

I have 2 USB drives. I have had 9.04 running on one for some time. I used Disk Creator in 9.04 to 'create' the drive. I use it as a reference to verify how things went in 9.04 if I hit a problem with 9.10.

However, after some months, when I tried this USB drive it produced this 'Boot Failure'. I followed up by checking the other USB drive which had Lubuntu installed via USB Disk Creator and it produced the same result ie 'Boot Failure'.

The Machine bios is set in the correct order.

I have tried to 're-do' things via 'Disk Creator' in 9.10 and 9.04 with the same result. It is not likely that both USB drives have failed at the same time.

Is Grub2 at fault in some way?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Banshee Produces Two Songs When Ripping CD?

Jun 24, 2010

When ripping a CD, Banshee produces two songs in my library for each track on the CD. Both songs point to the same file in my Music folder (so just one actual file). Also of note, one of the songs is always a few seconds shorter than the other. I can safely remove the shorter version of each song from my library without repercussions, it's just annoying and weird.

Ubuntu :: Splash Screen With Vertical Bars

May 6, 2010

I'm still getting some vertical lines through my splash screen, they are just a little darker purple than the rest of the screen, but disappear over the ubuntu logo/text/dots. I've tried the following from the faq, which made the screen at least show up, which is wasn't doing before.

Bootup/Plymouth.
Users should experience a much faster boot however some users may experience problems with Plymouth after the nVidia graphics driver has been enabled. Users may experience plymouth using lower graphics resolution. [URL]

Graphical solution : [URL]

Command line :
(Some of the fixes put forward dont work for everyone.)
One that works for nVidia and to try is this.
Code:
gksu gedit /etc/default/grub
and add the line in BOLD.
# The resolution used on graphical terminal
# note that you can use only modes which your graphic card supports via VBE
# you can see them in real GRUB with the command `vbeinfo'
#GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=1680x1050 Save the file and run
Code:
sudo update-grub
The resolution chosen should be your monitors native resolution.

Other graphics card users may get a black screen with flashing cursor and then a very short duration plymouth. [URL]. One fix for this is to create this file.
Code:
gksu gedit /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash
and add this option FRAMEBUFFER=y, save the file.
Then
Code:
sudo update-initramfs -u

Software :: Vertical Task Bar

Feb 6, 2010

First off, I'd like to thank all the people on these forums. Gotten a lot of help and answers from reading these forums. So I've been trying for what seems like forever to get a decent vertical task bar. So far, KDE seems to be the only thing that manages to get it close, but I don't want to be restricted to KDE to have a desktop that works the way I want it to.I've also tried some dock apps, and while they look nice, I'm not really liking them.

Here's basically what I'm looking for:shows a nice vertical list with a small icon followed by the name of the window.keeps windows from the same application next to each other (but doesn't group them all into one keeps everything reasonably sized; doesn't make a single window take up all the available vertical space support some kind of window notification flashing (ex. an IM window flashing when you get a new message)

Ubuntu Installation :: Vertical Screen Wrap After Upgrading To 10.04 LTS?

Jun 24, 2010

I am seeing the Vertical screen wrap problem (discussed in [URL]) on a 64-bit Athlon XP desktop with the Ubuntu version that I installed yesterday (10.04 LTS 32-bit).

Vertical screen wrap, with the mouse pointer offset by a few pixels to the north, taskbar partially visible .

The xserver video amd package version is, xserver-xorg-video-amd 2.11.8-4 and the geode package is, xserver-xorg-video-geode 2.11.8-4. Is it possible that the problem lies in the new geode package (and not the intel/amd driver) ?

Debian :: Aptitude Produces Unreadable SSH Screen

When it happens it looks like there is a selection of options I cannot read, one of which is highlighted, for which I am expected to choose one of. In the above example "+ee-_c¦--e++" was the highlighted option in the list.

How is this fixed to be made readable every time?

When I invoke aptitude without any arguments the screen is readable and looks just like it should.

The SSH window is displayed by my local Windows XP. The remote OS is Debian 5.

Ubuntu :: Compiz Cube Disables Vertical Viewport Switching

May 13, 2010

I have sixteen workspacess arranged in a 4x4 square. When the Compiz desktop cube is enabled, I can only switch between four of them on a row. All keys that would otherwise allow me to switch up and down between rows are disabled, even the ones I set outside of Compiz.

What is worst is that even the Window switchers are unable to change the current row I am on. If I use the Ring, Shift or Static switchers' "All Workspaces" modes, I can see the windows on all sixteen workspaces - but trying to switch to a window that is above or below the row I am currently on will only rotate around to the correct workspace's column, but not actually bring up the workspace the window is on. To navigate between all workspaces, I have to use the "Expose" feature.

Is there any way I can have a cube for horizontal navigation, but keep ordinary vertical navigation?

Software :: Firefox Printing Produces Garbled Output?

May 7, 2010

I've noticed in the past week or so that any time I print something from Firefox I wind up with a pile of paper that has either nothing on it, is a mess of graphics characters, or a combination of the two. No other applications seem to have problems printing. I can successfully print from gedit, OOWriter, OOCalc, as well as other browsers (well, I'm not 100% certain of Opera yet). Output from LaTeX/dvips and even an old handcrafted PostScript file can be printed correctly with "lpr". I've tried printing to a file from all the browsers on my system and they all produce output viewable with "gv" except Firefox. So... I suspect that something's gotten horribly misconfigured in my FF settings.

Q: What does one do to go back to FF defaults without blowing away the entire browser configuration? I'm not keen on losing all the browser settings if I can possibly avoid it. Especially bookmarks and stored passwords (though those could be written down, I guess, and re-saved). This problem started with FF 3.5.4 (if memory serves) that I had gotten from OpenSUSE's download site. Today I uninstalled that and grabbed a copy of the 3.6.3 tar archive and installed that. It didn't help so I suspect it's a configuration problem that 3.6.3 has inherited from the old settings.

One thing I will try as soon as I can is to login into the system as a different user and see if that account is able to print correctly from FF. I will post the results as soon as I attempt that. I was looking around in the "about:config" page and noticed that there are definitions for ancient print queues that no longer exist on our network. I can see no way to remove these. Is there a way to remove these unneeded configuration settings?
