Fedora :: Yum Update Produces /sbin/grubby Error
Jul 14, 2010
I got this upon installation of the new kernel:
Code:
And then, on the Cleanup phase:
Code:
My question is, am I going to have issues on reboot, and if so, is there anything I can do to prevent them?
I'm a bit loose on what, specifically, grubby does other than what yum info tells me:
Code:

so I was trying to do sheduled updates on server, which is doing xen virtualization
doing kernel update (to 2.6.18-164.el5xen) i got the following error:
Running Transaction
Installing : kernel-xen [1/1]
grubby fatal error: unable to find a suitable template
and of course new kernel doesn't appears in grub.conf and don't know what is cause of this problem last kernel i was updateting in August and as i remember everything went just fine:
current kernel:
2.6.18-128.4.1.el5xen #1 SMP Tue Aug 4 21:33:24 EDT 2009 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
#cat /boot/grub/grub.conf
# grub.conf generated by anaconda
[code]....
also could it be because running kernel is removed?also could it be because of LABEL entry, not /dev/... ( as i found out it was such bug, some years time ago)

I went to a help site because I wanted to install an IRC client named seamonkey. I followed the directions step by step, copy and pasting each and every command into my terminal command line as per the instructions. Every single command produced an error. Needless to say, I was unable to install it. What's even more frustrating is I can't even post the url for the site here so someone can see what commands I was using.

Suse 11.3 KDE 32bit Following instructions in software.opensuse.org: Search Results I installed LibreOffice using the 1-click Install method. It will not start and produces no error when invoked from the console. Now here's the strangest part. If I left click on an .ods file produced by LibreOffice on another computer (on which it worked) KDE tries to extract it using ark even though file properties identifies it as an "ODS spreadsheet".

Running first upgrade after installing 9.10.
Currently on item "Configuring linux-image-2.6.31-20-generic" and the progress bar/terminal readout has not changed for an hour or so I'd say.
Don't want to cause issues by killing it halfway through, especially as it presents an opportunity to learn something!

After normal use the computer was turned on and would not load (10.04) and the error message on the screen was :
Quote:
/sbin/init: error while loading shared libraries: libnih.so.1: cannot open shared object file: Input/output error
[ 26.369130] Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
Anyways, I put the hard drive in an external unit, and I ran fsck. Many errors came up and they were all fixed. I was able to mount the drive on my other computer and back up files in the home directory.
If I try to select recovery mode and the same error appears.
What can I do in this case? Can I somehow get into a recovery-like mode off of the livecd to maybe fix the packages that might be "messed up"?

I'm running Slacware current. Ran the updates this morning, including kernel 2.6.33.2. I always get nervous about that since something often goes wrong. Sure enough -
trying to boot I get No kewrnel modules found for Linux 2.6.33.2-smp mount: mounting /dev/sda9 on /mnt failed: No such device ERROR: No /sbin/init found on rootdev ( or not mounted ) and failure to proceed with booting. I got an original warning about the initial ram disk being too big to fit and switched to using generic kernel, and yes I did run lilo afterwards and did add the initrd.gz line. I run Ubuntu on the same laptop and have to boot into that and work as chroot in my Slackware partition to try and fix things.

I'm currently trying to setup Slackware 13.7 on a server, using software RAID 1. I'm using the README_RAID.TXT document at the root of the Slackware disc as a reference. Anyway, here's what I have so far.
/dev/md1 -> /boot partition
/dev/md2 -> swap partition
/dev/md3 -> / partition
Code:
[root@raymonde:~] # fdisk -l /dev/sd{a,b}
Disk /dev/sda: 41.1 GB, 41110142976 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 4998 cylinders, total 80293248 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
[code]....
I created an initrd image using mkinitrd -F, added an according stanza to /etc/lilo.conf and ran 'lilo' after that. Now I can boot on the vanilla huge kernel all right. But I can't seem to boot on the generic kernel. Whenever I try to do this, the boot process stops short on the following error message:
Code:
mount: mounting /dev/md3 on /mnt failed: Device or resource busy
ERROR: no /sbin/init found on rootdev

Let's get clear with all bin and sbin folders(from filesystem hierarchy standard):
So the question is: Why there are so many directories and what are the meanings of /usr/sbin, /usr/local/sbin and /usr/local/bin?
Many programs are distributed through archives and we have to build them from source code. Usually they have makefile so it's quite easy. This process involves creating files in usr/local/lib, usr/local/bin... usr/local/whatever without creating specific folders for a given program.
I think it's not right because if we need to remove the program we have to manually delete every of its files if the program's creator didn't take care of it.

Fedora 11 update released today creates a dependency issue in my x86-64 system: Processing Dependency: kernel-uname-r = 2.6.29.5-191.fc11.x86_64 for package: kmod-wl-2.6.29.5-191.fc11.x86_64-5.10.91.9-3.fc11.1.x86_64 # yum info kernel-uname-r produces "no matching packages to list" the yum info pack tells me kmod-wl is: Metapackage which tracks in wl kernel module for newest kernel so it seems important to have it up to date. What should I do?

I switched from Ubuntu to Fedora and I'm having a little bit of trouble understanding why I cannot update my system. Fedora seems to be a little bit more complicated than Ubuntu to update and to do other things... I'm still willing to try it because it has a good reputation and good reviews so I will go ahead and give it a shot but before I do that I need to update it. I have an HP pavilion notebook dv2000. Just installed Fedora 15 and my system is telling me that I have over 700 updates! when I click on install updates I get an error:
Transaction error An unspecified transaction error has occurred. More information is available on the detailed report. Then on the details this is what I get:
