I upgraded ubuntu from 10.04 to 10.10 and after upgrading at login screen nothing shows up only white lines. When i was upgrading to 10.10 a message appeared on screen regarding failure to remove fglrx. I wonder if this is the issue. I can still login using the old version but cant go to updated ubuntu

I am seeing the Vertical screen wrap problem (discussed in [URL]) on a 64-bit Athlon XP desktop with the Ubuntu version that I installed yesterday (10.04 LTS 32-bit).
Vertical screen wrap, with the mouse pointer offset by a few pixels to the north, taskbar partially visible .
The xserver video amd package version is, xserver-xorg-video-amd 2.11.8-4 and the geode package is, xserver-xorg-video-geode 2.11.8-4. Is it possible that the problem lies in the new geode package (and not the intel/amd driver) ?
I recently downloaded and installed Fedora 11 Alpha. I then installed the Nvidia drivers for my Graphics card (GeForce 7800 GTX). I discovered that Fedora 11 is using a Beta version of Xorg and an incompatible ABI. So, my drivers would not work with Fedora 11 without me dowgrading the Xorg server. I decided to reinstall Fedora 10 instead.
I started the install, and when the installation loaded the generic video drivers, my screen showed only a bunch of colored vertical lines. Fedora 10 doesn't allow me to install in text mode.
I installed the slack 13 in an old Toshiba Qosmio F10, and everything was ok...but then,like 2 or 3 days after,I got a display problem at boot time: the screen is flashing, in vertical lines,so I read 2 letters,and then the next 2 are flashing. And it can't boot. 'Loading the kernel' is the last message.
I tried booting from the slack cd, the huge.s, but I got the same.
The strange is that if I use an old (very old) live cd, Kurumim 4.0, a dead Debian-based Brazilian live-cd, it boots. And then I have the vertical lines in graphic mode, but the notebook works.
I think that this is a hardware problem, but since it works with an old debian livecd,I suppose it should also be bootable with Slack.
EDITED: Ok,I tried Ubuntu and it couldn't boot,but eith the 'grapfical safe mode' it booted.
Since I can't believe that even Ubuntu would boot, but not the Slack, I tried

I don't seem to have an "xorg.conf" file.
Gateway SB400a computer with Edubuntu Lucid installed. The problem first cropped up when I installed the Edubuntu packages on Ubuntu. I did a fresh install with Edubuntu and the problem persists. I don't want to go back to Ubuntu since this computer is for my Grandkids and I want to the Edubuntu stuff for them.
I don't have the specs handy, but I can get them. what I have to do to get them. (it happens when you get old)

I'm using the default Ambiance theme with 11.04, but my bottom gnome panel has strange white vertical lines as well as a very light background on active windows. It's almost as if it's using the Clearlooks theme for open applications and Ambiance for everything else. Also when I right click some of the systray items I get weird backgrounds in the tooltip. So far I've tried deleting all my .gnome config folders in my home directory, logging in/out etc. and nothing seems to work. Attached screenshots of the problems.
View 1 Replies View RelatedEver since the problem with Flash started up a few days ago, (Videos Lagging/jumpy/jerky horridly.) I decided to finally switch from 9.10 to 10.04...all was going well until a few minutes ago while I was browsing themes and running Konversation, the skin flickered black/green a few times then white vertical lines started appearing down from the top of the screen to about the middle, (Almost looked like the teeth on a haircomb). I had to then shutdown and restart. What id like to know is are the two connected (My earlier flash problem and this) or how I can fix it, so far it hasn't happened again but I'm starting to worry, I've never had problems with Ubuntu until a few weeks ago.
View 2 Replies View Relatedyesterday I updated my fedora 13 to fedora 14 (on laptop) and today i cannot log in on user. It just go blank for a sec and is back to login.
At text console (alt+ctr+f2/f3) i enter my username and pass it give this for a sec and resets (clean) console

last used: [date]
login: no shell permission denied
i used unetbootin (fedora 14 netinstall to update) and later i updated 1,5G before reboot (did update that fix, forgot its name tho :s)
I would most likely reinstall everything, but i have some work at laptop and as death-line is near, i would prefer to fix it if possible.

i have installed F13 on unused space, is there a way for me to access and fix it? or at least get some files from there?
Start xpdf or gv. Click an xterm to be active and slide it over xpdf/gv. Vertical lines from xpdf/gv under the xterm stick to the xterm window above and make it unreadable.
The problem does NOT show with KDE default settings with display effects on but does show in fvwm, xfce etc, and in KDE without effects.
On a system with a Sandy Bridge integrated graphics (i5-2400) the problem went away by downgrading to xf86-video-intel-2.13.0. But it was not enough for another system with 945G which needed downgrading to xf86-video-intel-2.12.0.
Yesterday I did a successful upgrade to 10.04. Today, after a few hours of using and a few reboots, when I provide my password in GDM, the screen turns black and gets me back to the GDM. The same with recovery mode.When I turn onto the terminal I can't see any letters but a bunch of blurred lines on the top of the screen. In recovery mode the terminal works properly.GDM also works properly. Neither graphics, nor the resolution has changed.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a problem after upgrading from Kubuntu 9.10 to 10.04.1 (LTS): after reboot I get the login panel but when I type login + password, the system begin to go ahead but immediately comes back to login panel, so I can't get the Desktop obviously .
I checked the following : The kubuntu-desktop is already in place the kdm I think it works well (start & stop work) and the file xorg.conf has been rebuilded with the cmd "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg".
I can't seem to login to X after I've upgraded from F13 to F14 (x86_64 KDE Spin). I retained my /home partition with my user account etc.
The system fails when I try to login to the account I had on F13, but if I create a new user account I can login to X.
I did have the nvidia proprietary graphics drivers installed... how to track down an X issue like this relating to logging in to a system via the GUI?
After upgrading from Fedora 14 to Fedora 15, I can't login to my desktop,The system load and when I get the blue screen with the logo, it stops :/
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've got 10.04 installed on my Blade 1000 workstation. Installed 6.06 first and worked my way up as per other postings. See attached cookbooks I wrote. Framebuffer is Elite3D-lite, and I have done the afbinit install. Using Xorg w/ Gnome and other windowing software to eliminate the possibility it is Gnome. From what I understand, Ubuntu does not require a custom X11 conf file like OpenBSD.
Current screen output shows large vertical stripes, where the stripes overlay on top of the GNOME desktop. Inside the stripes are the prior boot screen output of Ubuntu 10.04. When the screen saver kicks in, the Gnome desktop disappears, but the blue 10.04 stays visible. Mouse cursor moves across the screen, under each stripe as it goes.
My knowledge of framebuffers is limited. Would this then imply that the framebuffer is not fully "refreshing"? The screen does not provide full width even though the correct OpenBoot monitor configuration is set. Haven't found any mention of this issue from other Ubuntu/Linuxes Sparc users. Attached the X11 log. Looking at the log, I suspect this will need a custom X11 config file.

I did the upgrade to narwhal and I see the boot-up screen just fine but when I get to the screen to log in to my Ubuntu account this is where Ubuntu freezes up completely and I get nothing out of it at all. I do have VMWare upgraded to the latest version that is available as well.

After the installation completed I tried to logout (from Gnome 3 shell) but couldn't. A notification appeared saying "cannot find gnome save session" or something similar. Then pressed ctrl+alt+F2 then used the reboot command as root. After booting the new looking login screen appeared but after typing my password when I tried to login it said "something has gone wrong" and the only option which I see there is logout.
Had to reinstall 11.4 KDE 64 bit last weekend.This morning I upgraded from the default KDE (that comes with the 11.4 DVD) to KDE 4.6.3.On rebooting I am unable to login, after I enter my password the screen flickers, then I am presented again with the logon screen.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI upgraded my Fedora Core distribution from 12 to 14. Everything worked fine, except for SQUID which refused to upgrade. I then went to rescue and installed SQUID using yum and then restarted the upgrade. It did finally upgrade the system and then asked for a reboot. Well, when I selected the new kernel option in the GRUB options, since I also have Winduhs, it gave a kernel panic. I tried booting into the older kernel and it worked. Now I see the users that are there in the system in the Graphical GUI login greeter screen. But none of the users get authenticated. I used the rescue option and removed graphical login and changed boot level to 3. I also enabled the root user. In the rescue mode, if I do a startx, everything works fine.
I logged off rebooted the system. When I login, I see the version is shown as Fedora Core 14, but the kernel was still the older one with Core 12. I again went to rescue and checked out GRUB and saw that it had no initrd for the new kernel. I created a initrd image with the mkinitrd command and then added it to grub. I again rebooted. This time it shows the correct kernel, but still the system does not allow any of the users to login. All the Logins fail. I have tried going to rescue and going to the system using 'chroot /mnt/sysimage' and doing a startx for Graphical. Everything works, but only with the Rescue mode in the DVD. The normal boot/login sequence does not work.
Incidentally when I do a 'yum distro-sync', I get something like this :

It still seems to believe its a Fedora Core 12 system. Another information is that when I leave rescue mode and do a normal boot without installation media, it starts doing some SELinux relabelling and reboots. Any pointers on how I can get the system working. I am able to work with the rescue mode way, with any user, as it does not ask for any password. I can even do startx and work on the GUI. All my data is also there. I just am unable to get the user authenticated using normal boot/login. I have tried using passwd -d username, but it gives an error :
passwd: libuser initialization error: could not open configuration file `/tmp/libuser.ElY0r9': No such file or directory
In fact, I am now in rescue mode only when I am writing and sending this.

I tried to install "Wireless LAN" driver which wasn't installed by default on Debian Wheezy based on this DOC.
After I did all steps in that DOC, I've rebooted the system, and then Debian booted in TTY( gdm didn't start!!!!! )
and the main problem is I can't login to TTY and it say's "Login incorrect"!! (I'm sure the username and password is correct).
Overall :
1- GDM doesn't start
2- I can't login to TTY
I've just installed Kubuntu 11.04, switched on wobbly windows effect. It runs very smooth on my Nvidia GeForce 7600 GS with dual screen twinview turned on. However, I get these lines when I drag/move the window upwards - see screenshot:

I've come across an unusual requirement for a service in my Ubuntu system.Simply put, I need to find a way to search for all instances of a term in a file, delete lines containing containing that term, and delete four lines below each instance of that term. ither that, or copy the entirety of a file to a new file and skip over all lines containing the term plus four below it.This sounds kinda weird, I know. Without going too far into detail, I either have to change the logfile format for a server I'm running which is a huge pain in the butt, or I can just run a script to edit an HTML report generated from said logs. (Said report is really just for managers to peruse, and I like my log format, so I'm pursuing option 2.)

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm still getting some vertical lines through my splash screen, they are just a little darker purple than the rest of the screen, but disappear over the ubuntu logo/text/dots. I've tried the following from the faq, which made the screen at least show up, which is wasn't doing before.

Other graphics card users may get a black screen with flashing cursor and then a very short duration plymouth. [URL]. One fix for this is to create this file.

Gotten a lot of help and answers from reading these forums.So I've been trying for what seems like forever to get a decent vertical task bar. So far, KDE seems to be the only thing that manages to get it close, but I don't want to be restricted to KDE to have a desktop that works the way I want it to.I've also tried some dock apps, and while they look nice, I'm not really liking them.
Here's basically what I'm looking for:shows a nice vertical list with a small icon followed by the name of the window.keeps windows from the same application next to each other (but doesn't group them all into one keeps everything reasonably sized; doesn't make a single window take up all the available vertical space support some kind of window notification flashing (ex. an IM window flashing when you get a new message)
The screen info says it is 1280*1024*60Hz.I put this into the nouvou monitors hardware control centre. The screen is too stretched in the vertical. Some icons are cut off at the top.The screen is a V7 videoseven.For some reason the menu controls on the screen only work on the non screen movement icons. I cannot access them .how to get the vertical height corrected? If I have I will go back to the NV proprietary drivers but I would prefer not to do so.
