Ubuntu :: Splash Screen With Vertical Bars

May 6, 2010

I'm still getting some vertical lines through my splash screen, they are just a little darker purple than the rest of the screen, but disappear over the ubuntu logo/text/dots. I've tried the following from the faq, which made the screen at least show up, which is wasn't doing before.

Bootup/Plymouth.
Users should experience a much faster boot however some users may experience problems with Plymouth after the nVidia graphics driver has been enabled. Users may experience plymouth using lower graphics resolution. [URL]

Graphical solution : [URL]

Command line :
(Some of the fixes put forward dont work for everyone.)
One that works for nVidia and to try is this.
Code:
gksu gedit /etc/default/grub
and add the line in BOLD.
# The resolution used on graphical terminal
# note that you can use only modes which your graphic card supports via VBE
# you can see them in real GRUB with the command `vbeinfo'
#GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=1680x1050 Save the file and run
Code:
sudo update-grub
The resolution chosen should be your monitors native resolution.

Other graphics card users may get a black screen with flashing cursor and then a very short duration plymouth. [URL]. One fix for this is to create this file.
Code:
gksu gedit /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash
and add this option FRAMEBUFFER=y, save the file.
Then
Code:
sudo update-initramfs -u

Ubuntu :: Locked Screen Flashes Between Vertical Bars And Terminal

May 14, 2010

Ubuntu 9.04 works fine, I have just installed Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx without problems, it runs fine but after a while the screen starts flashing and the only way out is to reboot with ctrl-alt-del. First of all I get a pale purple screen with blocks of random colour in the middle then it goes on to flashing between two screens. In one the top half of the screen is vertical black and white stripes and the bottom half is black, in the other it is a terminal screen with this distributed across it:

Starting common Unix printing system cupsed
Pulse Audio configured for per-user-sessions
Enabling additional executable binary formats binfmt support
Checking battery state

On the latest occasion the text was "could not write bytes: Broken pipe" repeated all over the screen, followed by "checking battery state".

Ubuntu :: Reset All Personalization Such As Splash Screen And Colors In Grub Splash To Default?

Apr 25, 2010

If I re-install Grub 2 from the live CD should that reset all the personalisations such as as splash screen and colours in the Grub splash to default? In my case they are not resetting. I would expect them to revert to the default black/white you get when initially installing the OS. the Grub timeout to be a lot less than its supposed to be? e.g. the default timeout setting of 5 seconds is more like 2 or 3 in reality, and when I set my prefered value to 2 seconds it results in being about 1/4 sec or so.

Ubuntu :: Splash Screen Messed Up - Get Random Command Lines Mixed In With The Usual Splash

Jan 26, 2011

Since updating my graphics driver on ubuntu 10.10, My splash screen has been inconsistant and messed up. Sometimes ill get random command lines mixed in with the usual splash, sometimes the splash wont show and it will just be black till the desktop appears, sometimes it flashes on and off. I originally tried fixing the resolution and just made the problem worse. Then I tried installing a new splash via gnome-look.org, but it just made my shut-down splash blank and didnt effect my splash at startup. I just want the original splash that ubuntu is supposed to have.

Ubuntu :: Splash Screen Startup - Goes Blank For A Minute Then Briefly Shows The Splash For 5-10 Seconds

Mar 26, 2011

I'm running 64 bit Ubuntu, and on the start-up after I pass the GRUB it goes blank for a minute then briefly shows the splash for 5-10 secs and then jumps to the login screen. Also the screen is offset by about 10-15 pixels but from the login screen onwards it is centred. (It's also like this for if I'm in recovery mode)
How do I fix this and Im wondering if it is a hardware problem?

Ubuntu Installation :: Vertical Screen Wrap After Upgrading To 10.04 LTS?

Jun 24, 2010

I am seeing the Vertical screen wrap problem (discussed in [URL]) on a 64-bit Athlon XP desktop with the Ubuntu version that I installed yesterday (10.04 LTS 32-bit).

Vertical screen wrap, with the mouse pointer offset by a few pixels to the north, taskbar partially visible .

The xserver video amd package version is, xserver-xorg-video-amd 2.11.8-4 and the geode package is, xserver-xorg-video-geode 2.11.8-4. Is it possible that the problem lies in the new geode package (and not the intel/amd driver) ?

I don't seem to have an "xorg.conf" file.

Ubuntu Installation :: Sparc Blade With Large Vertical Stripes On Screen?

Jun 29, 2011

I've got 10.04 installed on my Blade 1000 workstation. Installed 6.06 first and worked my way up as per other postings. See attached cookbooks I wrote. Framebuffer is Elite3D-lite, and I have done the afbinit install. Using Xorg w/ Gnome and other windowing software to eliminate the possibility it is Gnome. From what I understand, Ubuntu does not require a custom X11 conf file like OpenBSD.

Current screen output shows large vertical stripes, where the stripes overlay on top of the GNOME desktop. Inside the stripes are the prior boot screen output of Ubuntu 10.04. When the screen saver kicks in, the Gnome desktop disappears, but the blue 10.04 stays visible. Mouse cursor moves across the screen, under each stripe as it goes.

My knowledge of framebuffers is limited. Would this then imply that the framebuffer is not fully "refreshing"? The screen does not provide full width even though the correct OpenBoot monitor configuration is set. Haven't found any mention of this issue from other Ubuntu/Linuxes Sparc users. Attached the X11 log. Looking at the log, I suspect this will need a custom X11 config file.

Fedora Installation :: 10 - Graphic Drivers - Screen Showed Only A Bunch Of Colored Vertical Lines

Feb 10, 2009

I recently downloaded and installed Fedora 11 Alpha. I then installed the Nvidia drivers for my Graphics card (GeForce 7800 GTX). I discovered that Fedora 11 is using a Beta version of Xorg and an incompatible ABI. So, my drivers would not work with Fedora 11 without me dowgrading the Xorg server. I decided to reinstall Fedora 10 instead.

I started the install, and when the installation loaded the generic video drivers, my screen showed only a bunch of colored vertical lines. Fedora 10 doesn't allow me to install in text mode.

Ubuntu Installation :: Booting - Screen Froze After The Splash Screen

Jul 21, 2010

I received the Ubuntu CD by mail the other day and tried to install a dual boot with it. I first tried it out by running from the CD and the first problem I had was the screen froze after the splash screen. So I lurked around for a bit and found out that I can press any key on the screen with the keyboard and person to get to a different screen. At this screen I entered "F6" and then entered "nomodeset", this allowed me to pass the splash screen.

Next, I got into Unbuntu but I found out that the keyboard and mouse weren't working, so I lurked again and found out that I have to enter "noacpi" (sorry if I got that wrong, I forgot the name ). I ran by CD once more and everything worked, so I decided to finally install it next to my Vista. However, after installing it goes straight to the splash screen, and the freezing happens again. The screen where the keyboard and the person are not showing up so I have no idea how add the "nomodeset" and "noacpi". So my question is, how do I get to the screen where I can add both those things? Also, is there a way to add it permanently so I don't have to keep pressing F6?

Ubuntu :: Graphics / GUI 10.04 - Skin Flickered Black / Green A Few Times Then White Vertical Lines Started Appearing Down From The Top Of The Screen

Aug 3, 2010

Ever since the problem with Flash started up a few days ago, (Videos Lagging/jumpy/jerky horridly.) I decided to finally switch from 9.10 to 10.04...all was going well until a few minutes ago while I was browsing themes and running Konversation, the skin flickered black/green a few times then white vertical lines started appearing down from the top of the screen to about the middle, (Almost looked like the teeth on a haircomb). I had to then shutdown and restart. What id like to know is are the two connected (My earlier flash problem and this) or how I can fix it, so far it hasn't happened again but I'm starting to worry, I've never had problems with Ubuntu until a few weeks ago.

Ubuntu :: Will Not Load GUI -- Screen Flashes At Splash Screen

May 21, 2010

Out of nowhere Ubuntu (intrepid, I believe) has stopped loading for me. When it attempts to load gdm the screen starts flashing at the splash screen and then eventually dumps me to the terminal. From there I can login without any problems but can not get the GUI to load.

When I run sudo gdm-binary it does the flashing splash screen again and then spits out the error message: WARNING: Unable to find users: no seat-id found. Then a few warnings about longest graphic displayed 2.5xxx seconds
I tried running sudo dpkg-recondifigure gdm and relaunch gdm as above and it did the same thing.

I was not able to successfully connect to my wireless network through the terminal to try to update in the hopes of that fixing the problem. Perhaps someone can give me instructions on how? (I have tried but can not figure out how to initialize wlan0).

Or, is there something I can do from my installation CD?

Ubuntu :: 10.04 - White Bars Coming Up On Screen?

May 9, 2010

After being on the computer for awhile, it suddenly stops and goes to the purple screen like one would see when turning the computer on, only slightly distorted. after a few moments it switches to a black screen with a flashing _ but you can't type anything, and then it changes so it's blank, and these white bars start to flash on the screen. I just put 10.04 on my computer about two days ago, it's been doing it since. When I first tried to upgrade from 9.10 I encountered a huge error of some sort so I just put a brand new install onto the computer from CD.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Black Bars Flash Across Screen In Fullscreen Video?

Jul 31, 2011

i've got a mythbuntu 10.10 box connected to my tv; sometimes i want to use it to watch internet tv. owever, when i try to resize videos to full-screen, sometimes black bars intermittently flash across the entire screen. this does not happen when the video is in a window or on the web page, only when going into full-screen mode. unfortunately, on some of these sites, even the "large" in-page video selection is still too small to be comfortably watched from the couch.

i'd suspect it's something with flash, but a similar thing happens when i'm using skype inside a windows xp on vmware. black bars flashing across when in "full-screen" but just fine when zoomed up inside a window. and i don't think vmware video output is flash-based. so it may be something else entirely.

also, this doesn't happen on all internet video - i've only had it happen on video from nbc.com and nfl.com (i haven't really had the opportunity or reason to try many other sites yet), and it was only a little noticeable from the nfl.com but nearly unwatchable from nbc. yet if i go to videos, i have no trouble getting any of their videos running full-screen.

i have an integrated geforce 8200 graphics, and i'm running the nvidia proprietary drivers version 256. i'm not running 260 since its vdpau capability is questionable, and i need that for mythtv. i have a 64-bit system.

does anyone have any ideas regarding this? the fact that i'm getting consistently good results from videos yet consistently bad ones from the tv networks makes me wonder if it's something i'm even going to be able to fix.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 Booting - When Screen Loads Up - It Is Missing The Top And Left Hand Side Navigation Bars

Jul 7, 2011

I have recently downloaded and installed Ubuntu 11.04 inside my copy of Windows. When I boot my laptop, I have the option to either boot in Windows or Ubuntu. When I boot in Ubuntu, I get the login screen all OK. But when the screen loads up, it is missing the top and left hand side navigation bars. It then appears to be trying to refresh itself (unsuccessfully) as after about 30 seconds the screen goes black and then the wallpaper image will come back, still without the navigation bars. This keeps on happening until I reboot the machine. The only way I can get the screen to reboot OK is to run the repair option on boot up.

I have notices that after the above has taken place and I have finally got the system to boot all OK by running the repair option, the system will not connect to my mobile broadband via the USB dongle. Not sure if they are related, but at this point they seem to be.
