Ubuntu :: VNC Can't Connect On Machine - Manually Logging
Jan 8, 2011
I cant connect to VNC server on my ubuntu machine? Actually I can when I go and physical login that machine. But if I reboot the machine then I cant login unless go to the machine itself and physically login to that machine. How can I connect to vnc without first manually logging in to my machine?

I am having problems logging into my SME Linux server from a new Windows 7 machine. It sees the server on the network, but does not seem to be passing the windows login through to the Linux server (which is how all of the XP machines log in). When I try to log in using a valid username and password it goes nowhere and just says it is an invalid username and/or password. I had a Vista machine that could log into this Linux server so I do not think the Samba version is the problem.

I remember it being really easy to add a printer attached to another computer using Ubuntu, but I don't remember exactly what made it so easy. All I know is that now that I have switched to Kubuntu the process has become much harder because now I have to find out some special locations, numbers etc. for it to connect to the printer. It's connected to a Windows XP machine on the other side of the house.
It says alot about 'contacting the network administrator' if I am unsure about what to put in. But I am more or less the network administrator. how to find out what numbers to put in so that my Linux machine can connect and print to the Windows machine? Or maybe someone knows a few commands to share? I go to Applications > Settings > System settings, Printer configuration, New Printer, New Network printer, and then there are a few options but I don't know which one to choose. Windows Printer via Samba, I guess? Then in the box that says smb://[enter stuff here] I need to put in info but I don't know how to find that info.

I got a new dsl modem/router today and now for some reason I can't login into an ssh session using putty and windows using the hostname of the debian box. I can login using the ip though. Also, it seems I can still access the debian box via samba/windows explorer using the host name.

I have installed CentOS 5.5 along with the Samba package. I have it configured (i believe), but when I try to access a share, it is not accepting my UN/PW. I have copied the smb.conf file from a working computer over to this one, but it is still not accepting my login. Anyone know of any other files I should check?
I have moved a working smb.conf file to this new box, and both computers have the same UN/PW's

I know this has been covered in many threads before, but I'm stuck not finding my exact situation or an answer. I'm a newbie using a Debian Linux machine as the client and Windows XP machine as the server. I have successfully mounted the XP Network drive on the Linux machine using commands from the root terminal:
mount -t smbfs -o username="Windows Username",password=windowspassword //XPcomputername/folder /mountpoint/
However when I put the command in the ect/fstab file as suggested in several posts, I don't get any result on boot up. I.e. I can't get the network drive to mount on start up, I always have to manually mount it from the root terminal.

I manually reset my router to defaults. Then I changed my router default password, SSID, passphrase, and disabled remote management. I used:
WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES]
security on the router. When attempting to connect, I use the "WPA & WPA2 Personal" option. This is really strange. I can see the SSID on both my laptops, but I can only connect with one now.

I have installed 11.3. Now for DSL I use PPP over Ethernet. I have configured DSL via YAST and it works fine. The connection is set at boot.
Now I want DSL to connect manually not at boot time. I did changes in the YAST/DSL to start Manual and rebooted. Once rebooted how do I connect?? Like any button/applet ??

In my driver list on my dell inspiron and studio 1737 the bcm5784m was not checked as a download i needed. What in the hell am I doing wrong. I'm running Lucid and and trying to get Samba set up to allow sharing files on my network. My problem is that my Windows laptop (Win7) can't see the Linux PC when I click on Network. It only shows my own laptop and my roommate's Vista laptop. However, if I manually connect to the computer (\serenity) it works just fine.
Right now I'm simply using the smb.conf that comes with the package and adding my share info.

I have been dist hunting ever since I bought my new desktop in Sept 08. some live cd or even install cd work or don't-- but I have learned some workarounds i.e. pci=nomsi at boot for example. Problem I have now is I have wired DSL (modem only) and need to manually connect. I can install tkpppoe running ./go-gui command but everytime I do I can send out packets but not ever recieving (correct me if I have this backwards). in other words activity is showing upload but not on downloads and can't ping either ip or domain or browse. been trying to find out what's going on I think it may have to do with the eth0 should not pull up an IP at boot which seems to be 192.147.x.x or like that according to ifconfig -a Otherwords, when I covert my modem to a router every is fine but manually connecting with PPPoE software that's another story. I would go with the router mode but the Westell model I currently have sucks with it's firewall. I usually go with a software based firewall. call me old skool lol. Need some advice.. I miss my journey with linux Even though I have Vista Premium solid as a rock--- I miss the special customizations only nix can provide and better security.

I installed XRDP on my home machine, made sure the service was running, NAT'ed ports 3350 and 3389 TCP to the machine in my router and punched corresponding holes through Guarddog on these ports on the machine as well, but connecting with: rdesktop -f "my IP here" from my workplace doesn't work. I get "unable to connect".
I have a feeling, it's still the firewall. Do I need to tick permitting the rdesktop protocol in both the "local" and the "Internet" zone or do I need to also establish specific custom rules?

My sid machine currently can't access debian.org, through apt hitting the repositories, surfing through Epiphany or Iceweasel, or pinging the server directly. It was working fine until about four days ago. However, if I type in the IP address, I can access the website, so it must be some sort of DNS issue. My home server, running Squeeze, can access debian.org just fine. Any suggestions for how to fix it?

So here is what I am trying to do. I want to connect my Open Suse 11 machine to the internet. I am almost there.
1. I configured my network card and eth0 is up.
2. I configured my DSL with user name and password and I am authenticated.
3. An IP address is assigned to me and the DNS servers are retrieved.
However I cannot ping or visit any website I use the YAST automatic configuration and kinternet to connect. Here are the gritty details
[Code]...
I do see that kinternet has trouble reading /etc/resolv.conf. It says 'permission denied' although read permissions are set on both /sbin/route and the path that it links to. This should not matter however since the existing entries are already there and valid. I also tried to turn off the firewall suspecting it could be a problem.
So I am being authenticated successfully ( verified with the logs ); assigned an IP; the route seems ok; firewall seems ok. But I cannot browse or do internet things I have been tweaking settings for 3 days now and all seems in vain. Do enlighten me on what I am doing wrong. I bet its something silly that I overlooked. I have had success configuring the same thing in red hat linux and browsing the internet without trouble. Is there something OpenSuse specific that I am missing ?

I have created a small network using Win7 (not a home network, it's a workplace network), but cannot see the Win7 machine from my Linux box (openSUSE 11.3 32 bit). I am getting the error message "Empfangen der Speicherliste vom Server ist gescheitert" ("couldn't receive storage list from server" or so), wenn I try to connect via "Locations -> Server -> Windows Network -> 172.168.178.2 (which is the Win7 machines local IP address).
Disabling the firewall doesn't help.
My setup is a DSL router to which all my computers are connected.
Despite searching the inet for hours I couldn't find a solution.
Another problem is that from the Win7 machine I can only access the public folders on the Linux machine using the root login (not the user I used to make the folders public).
