I installed samba and samba-client (sudo yum install samba samba-client) but I still cannot connect to this Windows machine.I installed samba, started the samba services (although that may only by necessary to connect into Fedora?), and even restarted the computer and I still cannot do this, I have been googling like crazy and only se articles on how to make Fedora a samba server...

View 8 Replies View RelatedI am used to using Ubuntu Desktop edition (Lucid Lynx to be exact), so I downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook edition for my little Acer Aspire One. One problem though. The places menu isn't there anymore.
How do I connect to a windows machine share? I tried searching the forums, but they all mention using Places > Connect To Server.
I have two machines in different location, lets say machine A and machine B.
Machine A:
- Linux Red Hat OS.
- Has internet connection (no proxy).
- Has public IP.
Machine B:
- Windows XP OS.
- Has internet connection (with HTTP proxy).
- Has connection to machine C and machine D. Machine C and D don't have internet connection, but machine B can connect to those machines because machine B, C, and D are located in the same network.
I need to connect machine C and D via machine A. I heard it can be done using ssh between A and B, but I don't know the details.
Right now I have a machine set up running Fedora. I have configured inittab to accept Console Logins, but I am having problems getting my netbook running PuTTY to connect. How would I go about finding the Host Name and Port to connect to?

Trying to setup Samba for the first time and am unable to connect to the share from my Windows machine. It is a very basic setup, just trying to setup a single share to use a backup location for my windows files.
I've done the following:
1. Fresh install if fedora 15
2. installed samba
rpm -qa | grep samba
gives the following:
[Code].....
3. Used samba server configuration to setup the share and create the samba users
4. When I tried to connect from my windows machine I get the error that the server is not accessible, you might not have permission to use this network resource or I get the error "windows cannot access server, check spelling and try again.
Both computers can ping each other. I opened samba ports in the linux firewall and tried to connect again: same error Disabled firewall all together and have the same error. Here is the output from the testparm command

I remember it being really easy to add a printer attached to another computer using Ubuntu, but I don't remember exactly what made it so easy. All I know is that now that I have switched to Kubuntu the process has become much harder because now I have to find out some special locations, numbers etc. for it to connect to the printer. It's connected to a Windows XP machine on the other side of the house.
It says alot about 'contacting the network administrator' if I am unsure about what to put in. But I am more or less the network administrator. how to find out what numbers to put in so that my Linux machine can connect and print to the Windows machine? Or maybe someone knows a few commands to share? I go to Applications > Settings > System settings, Printer configuration, New Printer, New Network printer, and then there are a few options but I don't know which one to choose. Windows Printer via Samba, I guess? Then in the box that says smb://[enter stuff here] I need to put in info but I don't know how to find that info.
At school can connect to my computer via SMB/Samba and VNC from the Windows Machines, but not by hostname (I still cannot VNC in at home on my desktop computer and have yet to try Samba there because I wanna setup Samba there from the comfort of my laptop and therefore need VNC first). How come I cannot access this machine by it's hostname?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am trying to establish the easiest way to share a folder from an Ubuntu machine to a Windows machine.In the past I have added things to smb.conf and that has all worked fine but what I am trying to do is to figure out what the "new user" way of doing this is so that when I am helping other people I know I am getting them to do the simplest thing.I completely removed samba and reinstalled it so that I didn't have any configuration. Right clicked on a folder and selected "Sharing Options" ticked the "Share this folder box" gave it a name and a comment and ticked the other two boxes.
When I went to the windows laptop then it kept asking for a username/password and nothing worked.Back on the ubuntu machine I did sudo smbpasswd -a [username] and created a blank password. Now from the windows machine I can access the shared folder.Is the smbpasswd step still required? It's very confusing for a new user as there is no suggestion that anything other than right clicking on the folder and choosing the options you want would be required. Is it something to do with the fact that this is an ubuntu machine that has gradually been upgraded through versions and this problem wouldn't have been there from a new install?

A. Windows machine settings as follows:

I mean I assigned the IP: 192.168.1.4 to Linux machine (Eth0). I did everything above and can't ping till now, when pinging from windows or Linux I get a message "destination host unreachable" restarted Linux many times but same result. NETWORK CABLE is working fine I tested it.
Trying to set up a LAN with an FC14 laptop, FC15 PC and a Windows machine running XP. I have SAMBA installed on both FC machines, but neither of them can see shares on each other or the XP machine. I can ping between all of them. The Windows machine sees all of the SAMBA shares.
When I attempt to Connect to Server under Places on the FC15 PC, I do not have a Windows share option to choose from as I do on the laptop, suggesting smbclient isn't configured correctly on that machine. SMB, NMB and WINBIND are installed and activated on startup on both FC machines. Although I have the Windows share option on the FC14 laptop, it will only connect with the IP address.
Firewalls and SELinux on both machines are disabled. Here are some configuration details:

View 1 Replies View RelatedExcuse the length but this issue will take a little explaining. I need to connect my fedora11 box to a windows XP (sp3) laptop. Both are on a lan, with the fedora box at 192.168.0.100 and the laptop at 192.168.0.102. The laptop has openssh server by way of cygwin. Both machines have account jimm with the same password. I can ssh (putty) from the laptop to fedora but can't go the other way. When I ssh from fedora to windows I get a login and password request which results in "Permission denied, please try again." . I know the password is correct as I login to the laptop with it. I have also tried using the windows rdp by turning remote access on in windows and then using any of a variety of desktop viewers to connect. This always results in a version of "Autoselected keyboard map en-us ERROR: 192.168.0.102: unable to connect ". I have turned off firewalls in both machines for these tests and made sure that the local router is completely open to lan traffic. I've checked the forums and not gotten any ideas on how to fix this. I seem to remember (from way back when) that there was an issue connecting when windows switched from plain text passwords to encrypted. The ssh password rejection is what got me thinking about this. By the way, I forgot to mention that I can mount a samba share of the windows drive on the fedora box.

I'm running Fedora 13 on my laptop and am trying to share out a folder from a Win7 computer. Folder on Win7 machine is set to allow access to everyone.In Fedora, I have SELinux disable, I've made sure samba is allowed in the firewall, and that the smb service is running. There's no password on the Win7 computer, so in the Windows Share setting on Fedora I just put the username and left the pass field blank.
I've seen some things say all you have to do is go the the "Network" place...but somehow that seems to have become non-existent and I don't know how to get it back.Also, trying to connect to smb://WinShare/Share results in it saying that the server has timed out.

View 14 Replies View RelatedSince I installed fedora on my desktop (there is no other OS on my desktop computer at the moment) I can't connect to my laptop which has Windows XP installed on it, although I can normally connect to internet from both computers. Here is the drawing to illustrate how everything is connected:
On the picture you can see that the phone line goes to the ADSL modem. The ADSL modem is connected to the Wireless modem with LAN cable. Wireless modem is connected to my desktop computer with LAN cable, and trough the wireless connection to the laptop. Internet is working fine for both computers, but desktop can't see laptop and vice versa. What do I need to do in order to see the laptop?
I installed XRDP on my home machine, made sure the service was running, NAT'ed ports 3350 and 3389 TCP to the machine in my router and punched corresponding holes through Guarddog on these ports on the machine as well, but connecting with: rdesktop -f "my IP here" from my workplace doesn't work. I get "unable to connect".
I have a feeling, it's still the firewall. Do I need to tick permitting the rdesktop protocol in both the "local" and the "Internet" zone or do I need to also establish specific custom rules?
I am having problems connecting to my Fedora machine wirelessly. What i mean is that if i try to access samba \192.168.1.93 rb while connected to my wireless network i can't connect.The only way I can connect to this machine is if i connect my laptop directly into the router then i can successfully connect.Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? I have an issue with the manner in which Network Manager is configuring the network and short of ditching Network Manager I can see no solution.The issue : Getting a machine to update its machine name in the DNS serverSounds simple doesn't it I operate a FreeBSD based firewall / DHCP / DNS server, using a default Network Manager DHCP configuration the Fedora clients do not register their names with the DNS server when they obtain an address.
I have traced the communications with Wireshark and the Fedora clients are NOT supplying the PC's hostname as part of the exchange so this is NOT a DNS server configuration issue. If I uncheck the option 'Automatically obtain DNS information from provider' under the DHCP settings the Fedora clients DO register the hostname that is put into the Hostname (optional) databox. They do NOT however store the DNS server IP address or any other records defined by the DNS server.
Is there some hidden settings or is this a bug because it isn't acceptable 'DHCP' behaviour if it isn't possible to automatically set DNS server IP addresses and at the same time register the hostname during the DHCP negotiation. Before it is said I know I can use a fixed DNS IP address but am not prepared to long term, I am also not prepared to define the Fedora clients with a 'static' IP. I am similarly not interested in playing around with scripts or any other such 'frigs' to achieve what should be a standard activity - registering a host with DNS during the DHCP negotiation.
