Ubuntu :: Local Printers Not Showing Up In Printing Application?

Jun 16, 2011

I was trying to add a virtual PDF printer and show I installed cups-pdf. Supposedly it is supposed to list the virtual pdf printer in the System->Administration->Printing dialog when I choose Add printer. But it does not do that. All it shows is the remote printers on my file server. So, opened up a web browser and when to localhost:631 and used the cups interface to add a virtual pdf printer, but still it does not show up in the printing dialog.

Hardware :: Network Printing 1 Ubuntu 10.04 And One Os X, 2 Printers?

Sep 18, 2010

I'm a newbie on lucid lynx 10.04

The Hardware:
Mac Mini late 2009 running 10.6.4 (Snow Leopard/OS X)
Dell Dimension 2400 running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx
HP Photosmart C4680 multifunction printer/scanner/copier
Canon PIXMA MX310 multifunction printer/scanner/copier/fax
Netgear Wireles-N 150 router model WNR 1000v2

[Code]...

As the HP Photosmart printer is currently connected, it is visible over the network by the macintosh however will not print (all jobs appear in the macintosh's queue without a "hold" designation, printer not on pause. pause/resume only changes the tag on the printer but does nothing to cause the queue to begin printing). Although I can navigate within the printer setup to the existing printer on the network, I cannot connect the printer on the mac without finding a new "printer" instance on the Ubuntu machine when I get there. The printer instance which works is the one the Ubuntu machine created, and the printer instance which does not work is the one generated by the mac, which doesn't work either from the mac or when printed to from the Ubuntu machine, now that this instance exists there.

With the printer connected to the mac, it is visible over the network to the ubuntu box however asks for authentication for the print queue and will not accept any password established for either machine. It also does not specify what account name the password should match with so is an utter quandary.

lastly, I did run dmesg but the result was too large for my terminal's log and scrolling back through it I did not find a section relevant to the HP (or Canon) printer to post here.

Fedora :: Printing From The Network Printers?

Sep 1, 2011

I am using Fedora 12. I am connected by Wi-Fi to a large network with dozens of printers (the network is running CUPS). How can I set up my fedora box to "see" those printers so that "print..." file menu option works? Also, I know the address of the CUPS server; when I go to System->Administration->Printing and I go to Server->Connect I can connect successfully and I can see all the many printers on the network. But I haven't figured out how to print from my favourite programs yet.

OpenSUSE :: 11.4 Printing - No Printers Found

Sep 7, 2011

Strangest thing happened today. I tried to print a simple text document from Kwrite and noticed it would not print. I tried it again selecting a different printer. No result. I tried copying the contents and pasting into Libre Office, then print...no printers to select...Odd. I decided to check on cupsd status from CLI. It was up. Here's where things get stranger. I open CUPS web manager and select printers...'No printers found' Okay, that's odd since I should have about 12, and they are showing up in Kwrite but not in LibreOffice nor CUPS manager.

Assuming Kwrite used some sort of cache I decided to check out /etc/cups/printers.conf....Hmmm zero byte file with but in the same directory a file printers.conf.O dated about 7 days ago. So I did an /etc/init.d/cups stop, did a cat printers.conf.O > printers.conf and /et c/init.d/cups start...all is back to normal. WTH?! What waxed all of my printers?

Fedora :: Slow Printing Through Networked Printers Running FC11

Dec 23, 2009

I have recently replaced an older server with a new Intel Xeon quad-core processor. The old machine was running FC6, the new machine is running FC11 64Bit. The problem that I am having is that printing to networked printers prints 2-3 pages, then waits 8-10 seconds and then prints 2-3 more pages. This repeats until the printout is completed. My first thought is that FC11 (or somewhere between FC6 and FC11) introduced some way to limit activity to devices? The confusing thing to me is that I went from a single CPU to a quad core machine, increased the memory from 1Gb to 3Gb, moved from a 32 bit machine to a 64 bit machine and I am running the same applications... they just run slower now...

Ubuntu :: Using Shared Windows Printers Without Local Driver

Mar 3, 2011

I'm a little shaky on how network/shared printing actually works, so maybe I'm asking for the impossible. I have a Windows (XP) box that has several shared printers. I would like to be able to install drivers/modify printer options so that any Ubuntu box attempting to print to them doesn't need to have the printer driver installed locally. Why don't I just go through the UI like everybody else, selecting the make and model, etc.? Well, It's a long story, but the short of it is that at the end of the day, I need to be able to add a printer using

lpadmin -p MySharedPrinter -v smb://host/sharedprintername .... without specifying a ppd file, and print to shared printers.

Is this possible? I managed to do this with a network printer (a printer hooked directly to the network via an ethernet cable, not going through a print server), but I'm not even sure why that was possible in the first place. If there is a good explanation out there for how to do this or why it's not possible, I haven't been able to find it.

Ubuntu :: Autodetection Of Network Printers Makes All Printers Disappear?

Jan 28, 2010

I've been using Kubuntu 9.10 for several months now. For most of that time, I configured and used with no problem several network printers.. a HP LaserJet 3015 at home connected to a Windows machine, and a Xerox Phaser 8560 at my coworking space connected directly to a router.

However, several weeks ago I was at the coworking space, requested a print from my web browser, and in the printer selection dialog, observed the list of printers expanding... some sort of autodetection of network printers was occuring, and multiple instances of the same printer were being offered, with slightly different names. Printing to these devices did not work.

Now, after a reboot, there are NO network printers available no matter what network I'm connected to. When I use the Kubuntu printer configuration tool and try to set up a new printer, it asks me to "Select a connection" to which the only option it gives me is "Other". When I put in an address for the printer it just cycles endlessly, never finding anything.

Ubuntu :: Printers Do Not Save In 'Shared Printers' Group?

Oct 9, 2010

I have a shared printer on my Ubuntu 10.04 machine, and it cannot be seen by other computers (macbook, pc) on the network. I have the printer shared, but it is not a member of the 'Shared Printers' group. When I add it to the 'Shared Printers' group, it stays there until I close the 'Printing' application GUI. Then, when I re-open 'Printing,' it is no longer in that group. I think this is why I can't see it on the network, due to the wording of the option in Server Settings to 'Publish shared printers connected to this system.'

I have set-up a stand-alone CUPS server with the intention to configure printer drivers and queues at a central point. The idea was that all workstations simply get announced this server and use whatever it offers. But I cannot get it to work. I cannot find any way to use any external server other than configuring a local server, which may use the remote queues, but still requires all printer drivers locally. Furthermore, I have to set up each remote queue explicitly, i.e. to me having the remote server makes no sense.

Software :: Local Machines Showing Up With External Addresses?

Nov 9, 2009

I'm running a "relatively standard" home network environment. That is, I've got a DSL connection to my ISP, and am running a router/NAT environment that connects a number of machines -- Mac, Windows, and Linux -- to the external network. Internally, all the machines have addresses in the range of 192.168.0.x. However, because of the static/NAT address mapping, the machines whose internal addresses are mapped to external static addresses show up at external hosts as 216.xxx.yyy.zzz (the address range assigned to me by my ISP).

The other machines, which are on the network via NAT, show up as 66.xxx.yyy.zzz, the address assigned by my ISP. Finally, I'm running a local DNS server that handles addressing issues for my domains and sub-domains that are hosted on local machines. All the machines use this local server for their DNS, with my ISP's DNS server as secondary. All of this is to say that it's more or less a pretty typical configuration, and, in general, everything is working fine.

Here's where it gets tricky:

* Machine A is a Fedora 10 linux box, which hosts an externally visible domain and runs, among other things, a web server. It's assigned to one of the addresses that's mapped to a static IP address.

* Machine B is a MacBook Pro, running Snow Leopard (10.6). It typically runs at 192.168.0.6, which is NOT one of the addresses mapped to a static address, but "just" a NAT address.

Now, suppose Machine B hits the web browser run by Machine A: the log files should show the traffic arriving from the local address, 192.168.0.6. However, it instead shows up as coming from 66.xxx.yyy.zzz, the external NAT-affiliated address. This seems wrong, especially since all the other machines on my network show 192.168-type addresses when hitting the web server.

I now change Machine B's address to 192.168.0.5 -- one of the statically-mapped addresses. Browsing traffic is now arriving from 192.168.0.5, which is (I think) as it should be. I now change Machine B's address back to 192.168.0.6. The web traffic on Machine B is now reported to be arriving from 192.168.0.6 -- NOT 66.xxx.yyy.zzz. It's complicated by the fact that I don't know where to look for the problem. All the log files on all the machines seem relatively normal; there are least no glaring problems screaming out from them.

General :: Revision Control Application For Personal-local Use?

Dec 19, 2010

I'm looking for an application which does what is commonly termed as Revision Control (RC). Here is the scenario: I have a directory holding numerous files and subdirectories, all belong to a project I work on. I routinely edit/update some files and wish to record `snapshots' of the entire directory so I can compare different revisions. Of course I can store a tarred version of the directory everytime I change something but this is immensely inefficient. So What I would like is to `upload' a snapshot into an archive file everytime I change something and then being able to `download' a snapshot later (for comparison/backup). Only I work on the project and I use a single machine so everything is local (no network connections).

My requirements are:
1. Being able to easily download/upload with one command an entire directory with all its files and subdirectories.
2. Any change to the directory induces a new version including renaming/moving files (even if their content hasn't changed)
3. The snapshot is aware of symlinks and saves them as such (and not as file they point to).
4. The files in a snapshot retain their original date when I `download' from the archive.
5. A GUI allows to easily navigate between stored snapshots and see which changes occurred.

Ubuntu :: Printing With Exact Size Photos And With Poor Auto Colour Printing But The Situation Remains Unchanged

May 31, 2010

I expected more from ubuntu 10.4 with regards to printing with exact size photos and with poor auto colour printing but the situation remains unchanged! for instance .. the photo size configurations for ubuntu/fspot/gimp and others are not compatible with my printers (HP and Brother) .. here in Europe a typical standard size photo (10x15inches or 150x100mm are not even on the Ubuntu listing? I have tried all listed possibilities including "custom" (which does not seem to ever work correctly?)and the result at best is photos with uneven boarders or at worse my printer goes a bit crazy with much wasted photo paper and expensive ink ...even photos selected for "no boarders" still produces photos with the self same uneven boarders.

I have tried pretty much everything over time following advice in this forum and including using HPlip and updating drivers required for my Brother printer but the root problem seemingly lies with the Ubunto photo size setup listing. Working with Ubuntu over the years I have found that it can do pretty much everything that Windows can do except for this dam ongoing photo quality and configuration problem.
