I want to update all the machines in the network from a central repository which is on my master server and whose archive directory is shared through samba.I searched in the man page of sources.list and found that there is an option for this but can't able to implement this. Can anybody kindly tell me the way to do the same.
View 1 RepliesI am looking into encrypting some data on a Fedora samba server. I'm not entirely sure the best way to do this. The server is currently running Fedora 5 but it can be updated if necessary.
I would prefer if the server could be booted up and that no interaction at the server itself have to be done so that users can access their shares.
Is there a way for the data to be encrypted on the server but when the user access the share over samba that it can be accessed?
The research i have done so far seems to point towards methods more intended for a desktop setup. Such as entering passwords at bootup or when opening folders.
I have recently installed Fedora 12 on a desktop PC and as my first experience of Linux, I am really impressed. I have now installed several packages and have reached a point where I would like to share the PC with other user (family members in the same house).My question seems so basic I am almost embarrassed to ask it but could some one explain the best way to create a local shared directory that could be used to store files accessible to everyone (e.g. music, photos, videos, documents etc.)There will be three users and as it is a family PC, they will all have full access.
Reading posts from various forums, I am little confused about what is the best way to proceed (i.e. what is Linux best practice). The simpler of the two methods is to simply make the directory using the mkdir command, followed by the chmod command to assign full access rights. Fore example if the local shared directory is called 'share'. The alternative approach assigns a group, a group administrator etc and then adds users to the group.
In my samba configuration, I have a strange share.
Share name: MyPrinter
Shared folder: /var/spool/samba

The spool directory /var/spool/samba has been shared as a printer. What will be the harm caused by it? (I don't know who shared such). And I also wanted to know the security issue due to it..
I am running Ubuntu 9.04, and wish to share a folder to be accessed without logging in via Windows Vista. If I set up the share through the nautilus right-click menu and enable "Guest Account", the share is inaccessible. The folder shows up, but it fails to mount. Vista says that it can see the computer, but not the shared folder.
The folder is
/home/william/shared
The only way I can get it to work is if I change the permissions of the folder /home/william to allow Others to access files.
I am trying to setup 2 individual FTP users. They should both have access to the same directory. They both need to be able to read/write into the directory. But, I want them not to be able to write to each other's files (e.g. delete, remove, rename, etc.).
So let's say the shared directory is: /home/ftp/shared/
UserA needs read/write access to /home/ftp/shared/. UserA should only have write access to his own files.
UserB also needs read/write access to /home/ftp/shared/. UserB should only have write access to his own files.
It would be a unix box of sorts, but that is the only restriction. I could use whatever software. I am currently thinking pure-ftpd or vsftp but I am open to all ideas.

Well, I am facing problem when doing lab questions.
I must use DLXLinux bundled in Bochs (bochs.sourceforge.net).
I am required to use the /usr/local directory.
In /usr directory, there is no directory named 'local' but there is one thing called 'local@'. So, when I try to use mkdir command to create 'local' directory in /usr , there are error "cannot make directory.....".

also one more question, when i "ls" the /ect/ directory of course i cant see the whole thing because my monitor only shows the bottom of the file, is there a way to list it like the "more" commands, or possibly scroll up?
I have ubuntu server 9.04 installed on my computer and I am trying to make a Domain Server. I have made sure that there are no problems in the configuration file. When I go to join the domain in windows 7 it tells me that it cannot find the Active Directory server.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am the IT Manager at a research facility. We have a fairly unique network configuration in order to support all of the different projects we have going on. We have Red Hat, Ubuntu, Windows XP/Vista/7, Windows Servers 2003, Ubuntu servers, Red Hat servers, and even a few Netgear ReadyNAS and Buffalo Terastations. Over the last few years, I have been migrating all of my users and accounts to a single ACL list, which I chose to be a Windows AD 2003 server. 95% of my users work on Windows platforms and just use ssh tunnels to develop on our linux boxes.
However, i ran in to a problem with our Linux boxes not being able to symbolic link on my Windows 2003 file shares. Of course, this is a problem with Windows not supporting symbolic links. I know 2008 does support this feature, but given the economy and the budget restraints, we cannot afford to purchase the updates we would need, so now I am moving all of my shares to a Ubuntu 10.04 server using Samba. I have joined the server to my AD domain successfully, i can login using my AD credentials, and even assign ownership and group permissions using AD users/groups.
Here is my question.
I would like to keep the AD permission schemes intact. I have several shares that contain folders that have individual permission settings. For example, I have a /shared directory that contains about 50 different folders. Some of these folders I allow my users to write data to, some just read, and others I deny access to complete groups and just allow key groups to access (for example, personnel data should only be accessed by the Administrative staff).
Is there a way to make this work?
I can assign uid and gid manually per folder in Samba, but i would like to have the possibility to add multiple users and groups with permissions to folders, which I do not believe can be done with the standard chown commands. Currently, I can see the folder permissions from my Windows box, but when I try to edit the permission settings, it defaults back to full access. So my AD permissions are not being saved.
I have 10.04 and have samba running.
Samba is remotely administered with webmin and aim to setup home directory sharing. I am however having some trouble getting this to work.
I was of the understanding that home directory sharing allows me to create a user in ubuntu, which samba will then pickup and offer it up as a share.

Essentially I've found this works providing I give the samba user a password after it is automatically created using the 'Configure automatic Unix and Samba user synchronisation' option in webmin.
However if I move the location of this home folder off the main drive i.e. /home/username I get turned away at attempted login.
I've tried specifying the path in [homes] using the path = /media/discarray, but this seems to break authentication somehow.
We have a couple of Windows file servers that just share files. It is all they do. We'd like to use Ubuntu on two replacement servers allowing Windows XP and Windows 7 clients to access the files. Our network is active directory based due to Exchange and homegrown .NET apps, so it is important that active directory is used to authenticate the clients. Samba doesn't need to be a pdc or bdc, but provide pass through authentication.I understand that Samba can communicate with active directory through security-ads and security-domain.
Here are my questions to see if I should proceed:1) Folder permissions:If we move all our files to the Ubuntu server how do we set folder permissions and will we see the active directory accounts when we do this?2) Skipping ubuntu accounts: I know the domain and ads allow you to skip creating ubuntu accounts, right? If not, how do you keep the passwords synchronized?3) Easiest way? Is there a very easy way to pull this off that I've missed? My goal is to eliminate the Windows based file servers while ensuring the admin part of it is as easy as possible.To date I've been able to get the sharing to work with an ubuntu account mirroring the active directory account. I'm trying to setup a Samba network share with a Fedora Directory Server backend. This will be used primarily for Windows users to authenticate before accessing the share. I am using Fedora Core 10 and have all of the latest updates installed. When I try to connect from a Windows machine, I am prompted for a username and password. I enter the username and password of the account I created in Fedora Directory Server in OU=People. The credentials are rejected. At the same time in the log file I see this:

Administrator is the user I created in Fedora Directory Server. If I perform an ldapsearch it will find the user as uid: Administrator so I know it is able to be looked up in FDS. But I'm guessing that's not the problem.

I already know of a work around to fix this problem, but I guess my question is why is this not working as expected? I am using a Windows Server 2008 R2 Active Directory for authentication.
I have run auth-client-config for the ldap profile and pam-auth-update. When running getent passwd, I get a list of both the local users and the users in the active directory (with populated information in the Unix schema extension). When running getent group I get a list of both the local groups and the groups in the active directory (with populated information in the Unix schema extension).
Interestingly enough, though, when I run su DOMAINUSER, after the prompt for the password I get an authentication error. In /var/log/auth.log I can see an entry with pam_ldap: missing "host" in file "/etc/ldap.conf". The SRV records in the DNS servers resolve correctly. I've checked this with nslookup and I have seen the records within my zone file. Obviously if the ldap.conf file is working with getent and the ldap server is resolving from the SRV records, it is working fine.
The interesting part is that the Windows Server 2008 R2 AD machine shows in the event viewer that there was a successful authentication, yet the Ubuntu box says no. When I add the host within the ldap.conf file, everything works...getent and the actual authentication, either initial login or su.

I am trying to install tilp, a program for the link between a computer and a Texas Instruments calculator. I have downloaded all the packages to a local directory. I tried telling yum to install all the packages at the same time, though, the dependencies still fail to resolve (though they are all in the directory). I don't know if it would be safe to force install without the dependencies (even though I would install them later).

i have an A machine, which has an ftp server (fedora core 8) and is sharing a directory with a machine B (fedora core 8 too), which has no ftp server and nothing special on it.
When machine B try to access to shared directory,there is no problem and works perfect.But when i share a directory on machine B and try to access to it from machine A, it doesn't work. I know that something related with ftp server make sharing work for machine A, but why? or what is it? is there a program or service that i need besides of nfs and rpcbind-portmap?. I had used nfs to share directories and i used rhel 5 to test all this things and happens the same.
I got a directory with files in it like: 2006-07-01.foo2007-08-04.foo I need to update the timestamps on these files using "touch -t 200607010000 2006-07-01.foo" on each file in the directory so I came up with the following one liner:

My goal was to use sed and get the timestamp for touch and then loop through each file and touch with the timestamp.However the script, not giving me the results I intended. This is a USB shared drive, with an ext3 partition. The partition is located at /dev/sdb1. I use Samba to share /media/tiga1000/samba/public, and everyone on the network can add/delete files to it. Specifically, this is our media drive, and we upload a lot of pictures to it, since me and my sister are amateur photographers. Under /public/images/camera_pictures/2010, I have 3 directories. 01_january, 02_february, and 03_march. The directory that has been corrupted is 03_march, and when I say corrupted, I mean that I cannot open it. It acts as a unknown file type that can't be opened.

How I should go about recovering it. Somehow it lost it's directory switch. Should I unmount the drive and run fsck on it? I would like to be able to recover these images, if it is at least possible!
I have ubuntu 9.10 & windows 7 on my laptop. I have one 40GB Primary partition (C & 60 GB logical partition on my windows. I have given another 20GB for ubuntu.
I hibernated my windows7 & then started ubuntu 9.10. Then I copied a folder containing some PDF files from my ubuntu to that 60GB (D on windows. Then I rebooted the machine & choose windows from GRUB. the windows came up from hibernation but nowhere I was able to see that folder which I copied.
Since ubuntu supports (understands) NTFS file system it means when I copied that folder it should have updated the Directory Tree of NTFS on that 60GB (D but that folder is not shown.
When I restart the windows the folder appears (ofcourse because windows checks the file system again for consistency while in hibernation it does not).

View 4 Replies View Relateda lot of ubuntu apps seem to use sqlite3 to store the metadata. some noticable are firefox, shotwell and banshee.
can understand firefox keeping it separate but what if i want to share the music and photos between two users on the same machine.
i've set up a user group (call it "two") that has two users have set up a shared dir under /content/twousers set permissions chgrp & chmod & flicked the sgid bit so that everything is owned by the group.
can then run banshee (or shotwell for that matter) under the primary user (the group owner) and import data (music pictures et al).
try a second user on the same local machine and can see the directories and files - just cant see the metadata in the sqlite db.
any way to get these apps to look for their metadata in the shared directory - doesn't seem like sqlite has a distributed db node mechanism available.
is there any way of assigning a unix evironment variable to do some sort of "directory redirection" - for want of a better term - or an sqlite trigger in the db that connects to the common sqlite?
I have the following line in my fstab:

And when I try: mount -t cifs -o username=usr,password=secert //192.168.2.100/e:/video /mnt/mnt_win_video I get: mount error: can not change directory into mount target /mnt/mnt_win_video
If I want to share a directory called /home/me, would I go to my /etc/exports file and share /home/me/* or would I share /home/me ? I am unsure of how to type this into the file.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running the turnkey linux version of joomla and I need to use PHP's mail functionality to send a notification email from a page (separate from joomla content) . PHP's native stuff is rather plain and I find myself needing the functionality of PEAR. So I've installed PEAR via aptitude, but it has installed to /usr/share/php.
how do I include these files from php scripts? Firstly, the files are owned by root, the www-data user doesn't have access. It also appears that the permissions on the files may need to be modified. Some php files don't have the execute flag (shouldn't they)? I recognize the point of having a centralized location for updates and sharing, so I don't want to just copy the files to my web directory (/var/www).
