Nov 18, 2010I installed ubuntu in a desktop pc and without configuring anything i had my network working: 1 windows 7 pc which is sharing a folder with other 3 windows pc and with my ubuntu pc. Yesterday as every day before i entered into win7 shared folder from ubuntu but it asked me for a password which was not set up in win7 pc.

Jan 31, 2011I'm in an organization where each user has a Windows network username, and a central windows server with a folder for each user. I can access the folder using SAMBA and my (windows) network user name. I want to change the permissions (sharing settings) for my folder on this windows server - using only Ubuntu.
Had i been using windows I would simply right-click on the folder, go to permissions settings and add/modify users in the list.First of all, is it even possible to do this using Ubuntu?

Feb 16, 2011i had created a thread in desktop environment and had received no comments, so posting it here again.
Had installed ubuntu alongside windows xp in dual boot. everything was working fine untill last week.
last week i did share a folder on NTFS partition from ubuntu to be accessed by my laptop which runs XP. i could access the folder after i ran this command from terminal "sudo smbpasswd -a myusername". After this i cannot boot to windows. it shows up windows screen and reboots again. ubuntu works fine. what do i do to get back windows XP to working again?

Mar 30, 2010Here is my config so far :
1. I installed Windows server 2008, with Active Directory, DNS, DHCP.
2. I installed Ubuntu 9.10 and joined it to the domain. Everything is ok. I can see the Ubuntu in the active directory, it gets an Ip address from the DHCP.
3. I create a shared folder on the server 2008.
4. I can access the server from Ubuntu ONLY by going to "Connect to Server" and entering the data to connect.
My problem :I would like to have the shared folder showing up when Ubuntu boots up or when the user is logging IN on the Ubuntu host. I have tried many things without success. I know how to do it so this is fine. BUT i would like a user to be able to access the shared folder without having to do anything (especially for users who are not familiar with computers). What is the best way to do it ?

Mar 23, 2010I am able to view my windows network from my UBUNTU desktop after being prompted for a username and password to the windows network. No problem. But how can I accomplish this from the command prompt?

Basically taking a csv file and moving it from mysql directory on my Ubuntu machine to a network folder on my windows server. (Windows Server 2003)
When I try that command from the command prompt I recieve;

Server :: Windows Machine Cannot See Samba Shared Folder
Apr 30, 2009I have everything networked properly, as far as I can tell, both computers see each other... I can use putty to port in and use my Linux machine (Debian 4). When I go to map network drive on my XP machine, I can see the computer, but not the shared folder. After some googling I found that i have to create my Windows user name ont he Linux machine as a user as well. Unforunately, that user is 'Administrator'. So I told Linux to force user, and it created it, and did smbpasswd command and added the user to the samba list. Still nothing.

Aug 18, 2011I mounted a shared windows folder from my LAN, and I changed the mount point's ownership on Linux using command line `chown me:me windir`. but when I enter the mount point, and to create files, it mentioned me 'Permission denied', but the file is actually created on the windows' folder, and its ownership is root:root.
this problem puzzled my programs going to run on it. cause them will detect a system returned error, and terminate in a abnormal way.

On computer 1 I can see and use the shared folder of computer 2 just fine.
On computer 2 I can NOT see the shared folder of computer 1 anymore since recently. I has worked in the past.
Some more information: the name of computer 1 is "daniel", the share name is "gedeeld". So the address of the shared folder of computer 1 would be smb://daniel/gedeeld/
Opening this address in Nautilus works fine on computer 1 (that shares the folder), but results in an error on computer 2.

Jul 23, 2010I've dual booted Ubuntu and Windows for years now and I've installed OSx86 on a separate drive which Grub2 picked up automagically and everything has been working great -- except I'm out of space. So I bought a 1.5 TB drive and installed win7 into sda1 (100MB NTFS bootloader for windows) and sda2 (50 GB NTFS windows drive). I now want to install two or three flavors of Linux. I'm thinking Ubuntu 10.04, Debian 5.05, and (if I'm bold enough) gentoo. each in 50GB partitions. I've already partitioned the drive a bit putting a 1.2 TB shared NTFS partition at the end (sda10), and a 2 GB swap parition just before that(sda9) My questions are:
(1) can all my linux distro's share that 2GB swap, or does each need it's own dedicated swap partition (installers generally assume you do)?
(2) can I re-partition space in the middle of the drive without messing with windows(sda1&2) and the shared part. (sda10)?

While I'm working on linux, sometimes I need to access the data stored on my windows partition. Yet, the access is provided through /media directory and I often, I have to click on several folders in order to access windows "My Documents" folder. So, in order to avoid this, I decided to create a link to "My Documents" folder directly from my $HOME directory.

The link was created without any problem and now I have a direct access to that folder just by a click. Yet, there is a problem. If I update any file of the windows MyDocuments folder within this linking directory, the file is actually updated on the windows partition, which is of course what I want to do. But If I decide to create a new file on the windows "MyDocuments" folder by using this linking folder, that is, /home/dariyoosh/MyDocuments, the file is put actually on the linux partition instead of the windows MyDocuments folder. So, having created a directory linking to another directory, is there any way to proceed so that any file operation, in particular, creation, affects directly the linked directory?
Ubuntu :: Media Folder Has Extra Folder Titled With Non-existent Partition?
Nov 24, 2010When I get my partitions listed in the terminal or in GParted they go up sequentially to sda7 as they should. The media folder in my file system shows the other dual boot OS and a data disk partition, both mounted, which is correct. All good. But there is a third strange folder titled sda8 however I have no such partition. /etc/fstab shows no sda8 either. When I open /media/sda8, it shows no files, says its empty and lists an empty available space that equals the empty space on the Linux OS partition in which the folder sits. But no pie chart shown, and it belongs to root. I changed the permission and found I can save files to it.

May 7, 2010I'm having an issue setting up users for file sharing. In Ubuntu 10.04 (which is awesome btw) I right click the file, and share it on the network. I can see it right away on other machine, and login using the main user account on the server, no problem. I get an issue when I try to login to the share using additional account I setup. I get to the login screen, and it seems to accept the username and password as being valid (it doesn't bring up the login screen again), instead it brings up a error message saying it's unable to mount the share. It seems so much like a permission issue. I don't want to grant all kinds of access for these users, what do I do?

Oct 24, 2010I've just discovered something I've not noticed before in earlier releases. I have samba installed but like to go the easy way when setting up smb shares by right-clicking on a folder and selecting 'Sharing Options' (That, by the way, sets up the configuration for the share in /var/lib/samba/usershares rather than in /etc/samba/smb.conf.)
Trying to get my Mac to be able to access the share, I was trying different modifications to the share with right-click > Sharing Options > Modify Share. Each time I did so, this caused Nautilus to restart - that is, the whole desktop blanked out to just the wallpaper and then my icons slowly reappeared. Worse, a file copy was interrupted. And much worse, a lengthy video encoding using OpenShot was interrupted. Both the latter irretrievably.This is unfortunate behaviour. Has anyone else seen it? Can anyone else confirm this? I couldn't find anything on Launchpad.
