Is use of GPL software in a commercial (for profit) company free and legal? I spent half an hour searching for answer but found nothing. All was the same mambling about re-distributing and modification. I found nothing related to plain old USE.
View 9 RepliesI just wanted to post this really quick. I just installed Fedora 12 and I have been playing around with it a bit. (it's my first taste of Linux) I noticed right off the bat that I needed an MP3 decoder and was having a hard time finding one. Then I found a free Legal mp3 decoder at the following address.They also offer a Fedora specific installer (.rpm) So if anybody needs a decoder, here is a good one.Since it's a free decoder I was wondering if it might be included in future Fedora releases?

What I'm really looking for are apps that work well with the US tax code or plugins for law citations in LibreOffice. I could totally rely on SuSE if I could find that stuff!

I'm trying to set up a customer who has two printers attached to their computer one is some sort of okidata color laser printer, which seems to work fine the other one is a brother HL-4040CDN, which prints fine from a Linux based application such as open office.
When i try to print from a program in wine, however, I can't for the life of me get it to print properly to legal sized paper, it doesn't complain about paper size or anything, it simply crops the print size to that of letter sized paper even though I tell it the paper size is Legal.
I have tried setting the default paper size on the printer's firmware settings, I have tried setting the paper size in cups both through the printer preferences applet and the web interface, i have tried telling the program to print to legal paper and the only thing i can affect is which end of the paper it prints to, i have even tried different drivers for CUPS, i'm not sure if the problem is wine, the program, the printer, or how wine talks to the specific printer via cups (the other printer prints fine) i am using ubuntu 10.04 or 10.10.
Since Ubuntu and other Linux Distros are free to download and distribute. Would it be illegal for me to have a Small Business of my own that would charge individuals/small-businesses to Install and Setup Linux desktops. I wasn't sure how that GPL license worked. I figured I would be charging individuals for setting up Linux Desktops on their machines or small business/offices and training/teaching them on the various applications they could install on their own.
Also, would it be illegal to create websites using Apache, Tomcat and other Open Source tools and then sell those sites. I figured many people are turned off by learning or installing something other than Windows desktops on their pcs, just because it is different. If this cannot be done under the GPL license, then could someone tell me how I could go about starting my own small business to legally Setup/Install Linux distributions.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI work for a large company & have installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a PC to run a CNC machine. The problem is I cannot connect to the internet to complete the Ubuntu install.
The PC is Win Vista 32-bit & the internet is working fine on the Vista side. It is a wired network. I do have proxy info but can't find where that needs to be in Ubuntu.
I've got a question on free disk space. I'm currently running CentOS 5.5 on in Xenserver virtual environment. We've had an issue with disk space. My question is as follows: - from a ssh connection i run df -h this gives the value of 90% used leaving me with 9GB. If I use system monitor via a VNC connection the free disk space value is 20GB free on the same volume. Which one is correct? I do use SNMP to monitor the same volume and should alert me when < 10% is free I know this works as I set the alert threshold to < 90% I get an alert.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am attempting to setup my home ubuntu-box (10.04, 64bit) to vpn into work (cisco).My attempt has been partially successful - connecting successfully to shared drives - but I can't access the internal company sharepoint site (using network-manager-vpnc). When I enter the URL into firefox, it tries for a few seconds then displays the "connection was reset" error page (see attached). I don't even get the normal pop-up dialog asking for my credentials! The URL is resolvable to an IP, and the server can be pinged successfully.
So, to make sure my home network wasn't to blame, I brought home a work laptop with a windows vpn client. This worked fine.I then went to work with Ubuntu-NR on a USB stick and booted up into ubuntu to make sure ubuntu wasn't to blame. This worked fine
I need to set up a server for my company.There are only 4 people working here and we want a server that will allow us to run a cloud-like system. We want to be able to log in and use programs and have our files available from within the office and at home. View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an internet from my mobile company, it isn't ethernet or a usb thats connected to a phone or anything. its basicaly a device that has my mobile card/chip inside and it connects to the internet, here's a picture of the device to give more information.

Basicaly on windows xp, or 7, I just plug this into any USB then it automatically installs a software, then program will popup that has "Connect" buttom, I click on that and i'm online, but in linux/ubuntu that auto installation is not coming.
When I try to connect to my company's VPN using the Cisco VPN client, I get a kernel panic. Please don't suggest I should Cisco's client, it only works with Kernels older than 2.6.24 (I have 2.6.35).
So I use vpnc. The error message is:
