May 29, 2011For example, the gparted application menu item doesn't work; using it means that there is almost no filesystem support. The only way to get it to work is to open a terminal, run 'su -', and then open it from there.As another example, I tried creating a nautilus script to open files as root with a command like this:

When I try using it, it just fails. Typing out the command in the terminal gives this (tested on a text file):

I'm pretty sure the problem is that it's granting privileges, but not using the full root environment, or something along those lines.

This does not happen from my user profile....xhost + actually solves the issue....so I guess I just need to add the host root to the list of hosts allowed to access the x server...
I try xhost +root......but that does not work....

The update manager checked some updates to install and after installing them, I had no graphic desktop any more. Only the command line.

No version of this driver is available that works with your hardware in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

General :: Remote Login To Display Framebuffer Device
Apr 16, 2010I hope this is not a totally ridiculous question. I use putty often to remotely connect to my laptop at home. I recently learned about the Linux framebuffer, and was curious if there was a tool like putty that would let me remotely connect to my laptop but use the /dev/fb0 device for forwarding graphics. Sort of like a vnc or X11 forwarding, but instead of using X, gdm, kdm etc. we use the framebuffer.

Apr 20, 2010This is on an old machine that is running Solaris 7. I know that I can run the command script 'last' to get a list of who has logged in. When I do that I get a very long list of lines like:

I see that the year is not posted. I have about 11 years worth of logins where users have logged in multiple times over several years.
So, here is what I need: I only need the date of the very last time a person logged in. I also need the year of that last login.
script that will do this? Something with output like

General :: Can't Connect To Display After Switching From Bash To Tcsh After Login
Aug 11, 2010Can't seem to use tcsh as my login shell under CentOS 5 as I used to (if I specify /bin/tcsh as my start-up shell, the windowing system doesn't come up), so am logging in under bash then switching to tcsh on top of that, but it won't allow display access from tcsh for my programs. Gives the "cannot connect to display" error that usually xhost + is the solution for, but xhost doesn't help in this case (won't even run under tcsh, says unable to open display "0.0"). $DISPLAY is set in .cshrc. Must be something simple, but can't seem to find a direction to head?

Oct 8, 2009Since Ubuntu and other Linux Distros are free to download and distribute. Would it be illegal for me to have a Small Business of my own that would charge individuals/small-businesses to Install and Setup Linux desktops. I wasn't sure how that GPL license worked. I figured I would be charging individuals for setting up Linux Desktops on their machines or small business/offices and training/teaching them on the various applications they could install on their own.
Also, would it be illegal to create websites using Apache, Tomcat and other Open Source tools and then sell those sites. I figured many people are turned off by learning or installing something other than Windows desktops on their pcs, just because it is different. If this cannot be done under the GPL license, then could someone tell me how I could go about starting my own small business to legally Setup/Install Linux distributions.

Reboot to old kernel 2.6.26-1 the said warning doesn't popup. Reboot again to kernel 2.6.26-2 and after login no kernel failure warning popup. I did it twice. IIRC I encountered this problem before.

May 16, 2010I just wanted to post this really quick. I just installed Fedora 12 and I have been playing around with it a bit. (it's my first taste of Linux) I noticed right off the bat that I needed an MP3 decoder and was having a hard time finding one. Then I found a free Legal mp3 decoder at the following address.They also offer a Fedora specific installer (.rpm) So if anybody needs a decoder, here is a good one.Since it's a free decoder I was wondering if it might be included in future Fedora releases?
