OpenSUSE :: Switched To SUSE - Applications For Legal Work?
Mar 24, 2011
As the title of this post indicates, I recently switched over to SuSE from Fedora 14. I find that the default software repositories in YaST lack a lot of the amusements and applications I use for my legal work.
What I'm really looking for are apps that work well with the US tax code or plugins for law citations in LibreOffice. I could totally rely on SuSE if I could find that stuff!
I'm also looking for a few awesome games that I can download from an official repository. Can anyone recommend apps that fulfill my needs, any cool non-rogue RPG games or any software repositories where I can find them? I've got an X86_64 machine, openSuSE 11.4 KDE installed and I've got 4GB of DDR3 RAM.

I see that the PHP5 version in the official repository (OSS) is outdated and dangerous to use. I can't find a newer version in the official update repo either.

I am having a terrible time installing our Dell 924 printer. I have it installed for windows, but cannot get it to print for my Linux system. What am I doing wrong? Can anyone give me some direction?

I installed the package "java3d" with yast, and I already have Java_1.6 installed, with the plugin(2 files from YAST). I went online to do a java3d test, and every test site says it is not installed, when it is. Now, where exactly was this supposed to be installed so I can use it under Firefox? Obviously it was installed in the wrong place and Firefox does not see it.
Current java3d installation directory>>>>/usr/share/java

One of biggest reason I need to use windows is because my company uses Juniper SSL VPN to remote desktop into our company's computer. Our company doesn't allow any native linux/windows app client, only the web SSL VPN is enabled.
Looks like this Juniper SSL VPN only works on windows computers. It makes the windows remote desktop client connect over the SSL web VPN from browser. Of course, linux/SUSE doesn't have the windows desktop client. Is there any way to get RDP work through the given SSL VPN? Otherwise, I guess I need go back install windows and starting using it again.

This is just a data point because these observations are semi-irreproducible results:
* sound. Sometimes the sound cuts out and no sound producing applications are able to use sound. I do not see any evidence for what happened in /var/log/messages. If there is something else I should look at, it would be nice to know. Nothing in the alsa stuff jumps out as a way to trace the activity, so I don't know how to provide any diagnostic info. After several reboots, it eventually restores itself and works correctly.
* video. Sometimes when I boot up, the secondary monitor has residual trash on the boot up/login screen. Other times, it is switched off entirely and I only get one monitor functioning when the desk top is finally up. Rebooting a few times clears this up, too.
The clear-up reboot requires a full shut down, not just a KDE restart. That is always ineffective when these problems present themselves, so these are likely driver level issues. I do not know where developers get their suggestions, but here's one: for each subsystem, have some well-named "I need diagnostics for this" thing available under the yast administrator stuff. That would turn on diagnostics for the subsystem. Then, I could turn it on for X and get something a bit better than the .xsession-errors (which showed nothing obvious for this problem) and for sound (aka "alsa" for those in the know).

I just installed SUSE in a VMware to test it out. A problem i've had with VMware before was getting the wireless to work. I was wondering if anyone knows a way to get the wireless to work over the VMware and in SUSE. I know this may not particularly be a SUSE question but all I saw in the VMware forums was one response that said it was not possible.

I couldn't get .wmv "windows media player" files to run under linux originally, when firefox defaulted to opening them with mplayer. I changed the default to vlc player. Now they can play perfectly, but the color is all blue. Different shades of blue the other colors don't appear.

I have two identical Samsung monitors. One is connected. to my motherboard VGA port (and appears as a Radeon HD 4200).The other is connected to a VGA port on a separate PCI Radeon 9200 PRO board. When I first installed Suse 11.3, I had to go through the nomodeset boot command (otherwise my system froze up on boot) and I only get video on the screen connected to the motherboard. The other monitor light. flashes which means it's not seeing a video signal. And, I do not have an xorg.conf file in /etc/X11.
So I did the following:
I did an Xorg -config which created an xorg.conf.new file which looked sensible in that it showed both Radeons, and appeared to set up a dual-head system. The only change I made was to change the driver for both controllers from radeon to radeonhd. Then, I copied xorg.conf.new to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and rebooted. And, nothing is changed. I still need to do nomodeset on boot and I still only get video on the screen connected to the motherboard. I'd attach the xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log files, but it says I can't add attachments to this post. I don't see any major errors in the Xorg.0.log file, but a lot of it is greek to me.

I am seeing a udev error message on booting that I have not seen before with LInux and which I cannot interpret. My Suse 11.4-KDE installation is fairly new. My system is a System 76 PanP4 Pangolin that originally ran Ubuntu.Uname -a returns: Linux linux-zcga 2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2011-04-25 21:48:33 +0200 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux. My video is a Geforce 9300M with an nVidia driver.A Google search turns up the fact that similar error messages have been reported with Fedora, Ubuntu, Meego and Gentoo. These frequently have had something to do with sound and in at least one case the advised correction was to reinstall udev. I can see where bugs were filed but with no clear response. Some of these go back several years, the most recent is within the last few months. I did not see a posting that involved Suse.
1.Can someone tell me what these error messages mean?
2.Does this pose a problem?Everything seems to work normally on my system once I am through the boot process.
3.If this is a problem how does one fix it?

I am looking for image batch processing (mainly resizing) apps. As I have problems with Nautilus Image Resize in the other thread, are there any other software that is fairly easy to use to batch resize images? Preferably from a one-click install that works. I tried Phatch, but that didn't work for me.

I am trying to get a Logitech Webcam (not Quickcam) Pro 9000 to work with my SUSE 11.2 installation (specifically trying to get it to work with Skype 2.1). I am using the KDE environment. I've been reading the many posts and seem to be getting the point that I need to install the UVC driver from the webcam driver repo. However, the link I found to the repo seems to be for SUSE 11.1...?
Anyway, here is what I have done so far:I ran the following commands and got the following output:

I've two laptops, my main one is Dell inspiron 1545 and for experimental purposes, I use Acer Aspire 5315. I used to be a Redhat linux user from 2001 to 2003 on and off, but lost touch with linux for the past few years. I grew frustrated with windows after my Vista recovery partition in Acer Aspire got corrupted and when I took the laptop for servicing, the service person installed a pirated copy of XP. The laptop constantly overheated and I always received all kinds of warnings from microsoft about using pirated version. I finally decided to buy a new laptop and hence bought Dell inspiron 1545. Too bad I didn't realize I could have switched to linux.
I was suspicious about Windows 7 in my new dell right from the day one and thought of checking linux options available. I was surprised to know the the most popular linux distro now was no longer Redhat or Suse but a relatively newcomer Ubuntu. I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on a 40GB extended partition and was extremely satisfied with the ease of installation. The hardware detector told me I need to install "Broadcom STA" for my wireless card to work. I installed ATI driver from AMD website and it worked like a charm. Like any linux user, I couldn't resist the temptation to distro hop, so decided to use my old Acer laptop as testbed. The first distro I tried was KDE version of Fedora 12. The splash screen was very impressive and more graphical than Ubuntu's, however the boot time was painfully slow and I ran into a dependency hell while trying to upgrade using Kpackagekit.
I tried Linux mint KDE next and it was impressive, but I was still not completely satisfied. I then tried Opensuse 11.2 KDE and I immediately fell in love with the beautiful look and feel. I was so impressed that I went ahead and replaced the ubuntu in my dell with Opensuse 11.2. However, it was not smoothsailing when it came to hardware detection. After a lot of trials and tribulations, I managed to download Broadcom STA drivers and managed to get my wifi working. I realized that Radeon HD was installed as default and tried to turn on compositing. KDE got stuck and even after cold reboot, didn't recover. I had to re-install the OS and this time I tried to install ATI proprietary driver. But running the driver install script threw up lot of errors and I lost my mouse cursor. I had to re-install the OS again, generate RPM for the ATI driver and install it along with Kernel source, headers, gcc, make, etc... Finally I was able to activate compositing.
I then installed Xen and when I booted to Xen kernel, my mouse cursor again dissapeared, most likely due to non-compatibility of ATI driver. I had to uninstall Xen. I then tried to upgrade the kernel to 2.6.31-15 and again my mouse cursor dissapeared. I had to re-install the entire OS again. I'm so frightened of Kernel updates now. I never had such problems with Ubuntu kernel updates, maybe ATI is more pro-active in releasing new versions of drivers when it comes to Ubuntu.
In-spite of all my hardships, I'm so much in love with Opensuse and KDE. I love it so much that it now runs on both my Dell and Acer. I've removed all the other distros from my Acer. It has been quite a long time since I tried any other distro and I don't even have the faintest desire to distro-hop. Infact, for the past few days I'm so worried about the news of Novell takeover. I really don't want Opensuse to die. It will be a big loss for Linux users.

OpenSUSE is starting to drive me a bit nuts. Actually what I'm trying to do is simply install VMWare server on a recent as possible SUSE and run 2 virtual machines, both the same SUSE. Of course 11.2 32 bit doesn't run VMWare server 2 so it's back to 11.1. The trouble is, 11.1 won't install properly on my PC.
The install process, booted and installed from the 11.1 network install iso image on CD, runs fine. The PC reboots from hard disk and stops at the grub prompt. I've tried the auto-repair option and reinstalled it from scratch a second time always with the same results. It seems the root partition is hosed, and that's where my understanding hits its limits. Can anyone help?
Incidentally should anyone be able to advise on the VMWare conundrum I'd also be interested. Maybe in another thread...

I have opened dolphin and some other application (avidemux, dolphin, firefox, etc). in the first window (dolphin) i have a file. i drag it to another window/application and if i release the left-button of mouse, the window/application of the drag destination become active (raise). is it any way to make it to come in front/top (active) once mouse is over window while still dragging, before releasing the mouse? there is "focus" stings (focus under mouse/raise with the delay) in "windows Behavior". the focus under mouse is working fine, but is not working while dragging. it would be very handy to see where i drop the file, especially if i only see a small partition of the destination window, which is behind other windows.
my spec: suse 11.3, 64 bit, kde 4.5.3, kernel: 2.634.7

What would be the preferred method to establish a remote desktop session from one 11.2 machine to another 11.2 machine in the same location? No firewalls, local connection only. I've looked at VNC, RDP with xrdp, have not been able to establish a session to desktop. I would rather not use desktop sharing if possible, don't want invitations involved. Want something similar to hitting from Windows with VNC3and taking over the established desktop session. This is in my house, no security risks involved

I just wanted to post this really quick. I just installed Fedora 12 and I have been playing around with it a bit. (it's my first taste of Linux) I noticed right off the bat that I needed an MP3 decoder and was having a hard time finding one. Then I found a free Legal mp3 decoder at the following address. They also offer a Fedora specific installer (.rpm) So if anybody needs a decoder, here is a good one.Since it's a free decoder I was wondering if it might be included in future Fedora releases?

I want to create my own Atom feed file covering some informational posts on a web page. I will maintain it by hand, so I would prefer it to be as minimalistic a file as possible, yet still a valid Atom file.I found Atom specification documents online, but there was so much information I felt like a rowboat on the Pacific ocean. I did not find a specific section declaring exactly what /had/ to be in a Atom feed file.
