Ubuntu Networking :: Connect To Company's VPN Using The Cisco VPN Client?
Dec 3, 2010
When I try to connect to my company's VPN using the Cisco VPN client, I get a kernel panic. Please don't suggest I should Cisco's client, it only works with Kernels older than 2.6.24 (I have 2.6.35).
So I use vpnc. The error message is:
Quote:
$ sudo vpnc
[sudo] password for phirt:
Enter password for user@group@fubar.net:
received notice of type (ISAKMP_N_NO_PROPOSAL_CHOSEN)(14), giving up
vpnc: quick mode response rejected: (ISAKMP_N_INVALID_MESSAGE_ID)(9)
this means the concentrator did not like what we had to offer.
Possible reasons are:

I'm trying to install the Cisco VPN client on Ubuntu 11.04, kernel version 2.6.38-8 generic-pae. I need a step by step process since I am an absolute beginner with Ubuntu and this is my first install on the operating system. I have already tried the network manager but connection always fails. I have also tried the website [URL] but this always fails, seems this was made for earlier versions of Ubuntu and earlier kernel versions.

I have got different clients with different SOHO routers on sites (Netgear , Linksys, SnapGear, etc.) All those clients use VPN IPSec . As you know that those routers has many entries :
Tunnel name
key lifetime
Preshared Secret
Phase 1 proposal
Phase 2 Proposal etc.
I am trying to familiarize myself to use different VPN clients (a piece of software ), that will be installed on clients, laptops to access their work network from home. I came across a problem with Cisco VPN client V5.0.06 I could not find all the above entries. I know Cisco devices are proprietary, does that mean cisco vpn client is not compatible with those router?

Problem:Your company network has internal only hosts / websites with names that end in .local, e.g.Your freshly installed Ubuntu machine works fine on the network, has internet access, etc. but cannot connect to these particular systems.Testing DNS with tools like dig / nslookup works fine, but normal name resolution with ping / telnet / browsers does not work.Solution:1. Open a terminal window2. Enter the command sudo nano /etc/nsswitch.conf3. Change the following line:hosts: files mdns4_minimal [notfound=RETURN] dns mdns4to this:hosts: files dns4. Press Ctrl-X, Y, Enter to saveExplanation:Ubuntu ships configured to do name lookups for self-configuring networks, based on the AppleTalk / mDNS / Bonjour protocol. In the configuration shipped for the resolver, this protocol is considered the final aurhority for the ".local" top level domain, and DNS will not be checked. The above configuration change eliminates this and restricts lookups to (a) /etc/hosts file, followed by (b) DNS

I use VPNC to connect to a Cisco VPN. I am able to connect, but some issues exist when I use SSH. For example, I login through SSH to a computer in the VPN and I execute ls => it works. If I execute ls -la => connection stalls. I think it stalls every time it is supposed to return more content (top, ls /etc).
If I do scp from my end to server => works. If I do scp from server to my end => connection stalls.

I'm setting up my first Linux laptop with Ubuntu 11.04 and my CB21ag wireless card works, but won't achieve speeds over 11Mbps (maybe not "doing 802.11g rates for some reason?) I guess this cardbus card is manufactured by Atheros for Cisco so I maybe that's why I'm seeing two wireless connections - the one with the "airo" driver gives me 11mbps, the other with the ATH driver would only get me 1mbps so I deleted that. The card seems to disconnect/reconnect periodically too - messages pop up frmo the wireless icon ...
lsmod says "airo" and "ath5k" are loaded
So to get 54Mbps (802.11g speed) I'm wondering if theres maybe a different driver module for the CB21ag card or some configuration I need to tweak. More info - security is static WEP, lshw -C network returns some "wierdness" about network 0 ?
-laptop:~$ lshw -C network

In order to gain access to my university network remotely I was asked to open a website that would act as a gateway. Upon opening the site I was asked to run a Java application, which installed a Cisco AnyConnect VPN client on the system. However, now I do not need this, but I cannot find a way to uninstall it. It does not appear in the Synaptic Manager or the the ubuntu Software centre, so I cannot find the package to uninstall it. The software does appear in the 'Internet' section in the Application drop down menu and runs without the need of Firefox. I read the Cisco release notes but I could not find a way to uninstall the software.

I work for a large company & have installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a PC to run a CNC machine. The problem is I cannot connect to the internet to complete the Ubuntu install.
The PC is Win Vista 32-bit & the internet is working fine on the Vista side. It is a wired network. I do have proxy info but can't find where that needs to be in Ubuntu.

I've just installed a vpnagent on my Slackware 12.2. A script running the vpnagent daemon is /etc/rc.d/init.d/vpnagent_init. My network is started with rc.inet1. The queston is at which point during the startup to run "vpnagent_init" script. I thought to add a call to rc.locale.

Cisco vpn client would freeze the system. The only way to recover is to do a hard reset. The funny thing is I had it working before, so it may be random. However, it just happened 3 times in a row and I haven't tried again. I'll try again tonight. I'm pretty sure I'm running the latest client for 64bit linux systems. I'll confirm that when I get a chance, as well as my kernel.

I have the following problem:I have to networks in remote places.I have an opnvpn client in one network that connects to the the router (openvpn server). My question is,can i connect the network where the openvpn client is,throught the computer with the client to the other network. If yes, how? (please make it an idiot proof anwser because i have limited knowledge about iptables). I was thinking like forwarding (the router in the network with the openvpn client is also firewalling with iptables) the request of the ip class of the openvpn network to the computer with the client, which masquarades the interface

I was wondering if there was a way to connect over ssh "backwards". For example, lets say there's a client connected to example.com via ssh from behind a router. Well you wouldn't be able to ssh to that client unless the proper ports were forwarded on the router right? So I'm wondering if there would be a way to connect to example.com through ssh then from there connect to the client using the already existing ssh connection.

More for my own posterity than anything else, I thought I'd document here the way to get to eDesktop through linux (debian, ubuntu) at the University of West Florida (UWF), since they appear to only support Windows through their documentation on the University web site, and the link through Argus (the secure web site) doesn't work in Linux. This is sometimes needed to use the University resources (libraries and computer programs) from remote locations, and otherwise a google search is fruitless. I had to have a guy in the computer science department show me how to do it.This may apply for other Universities with similar setups.

has anyone been able to connect a Linux VPN client to a safe@office 500 using pre-shared keys? From windows, I can establish a IPSec/L2TP(also PSK) connection with no issues(No third party software. Just created a new connection in XP).I have tried using StrongSwan and xl2tpd on Karmic without success.PPPd never gets launched. To me it seems like this should work given I can create a vpn connection directly from WinXP without installing any checkpoint clients.

I want to use FTP client (for example ncftp) to connect in active mode. I have firewall (iptables) on my laptop and most of time I am behind rooter. With outgoing packets and with passive mode all is working fine. But some sites accept only active mode.I could open some port range in firewall and in rooter for active data packets, but I don't know how to solve security issues. So how should I correctly manage active ftp connection?
How can I set data port range when opening active connection with ncftp (or maybe another ftp client)? How can I limit that incoming connections to that ports range is accepted only by ncftp or else dropped?
