Ubuntu :: Upgrading FROM 11.04 To 10.10 - Get The Black Screen Of Death

May 12, 2011

I've had it with 11.04. 2 days, countless posts read, and I still get the black screen of death. I want to go back to 10.10. Can I do it without a complete re-install, and if so, how?

Ubuntu :: Session Restarts Itself - 'black' Screen Of Death / What's Going On?

May 15, 2010

I'm having a really odd problem since I upgraded to 10.04 on my IBM T40 laptop. Every now and then, especially if I'm using Firefox (so it seems), I will be in the middle of something and suddenly I get a black terminal screen that flashes a few lines ending in "checking battery state" and I get bounced back to the login screen. I log back in and all my work is gone (Firefox and whatever else was open has closed). I was on the web for a while tonight and in a few hours it did it three times. I never had this happen before in 9.10.

Any idea what's going on? If it matters I'm on AC power when this is happening. I haven't used it long enough on battery to know if it does it then or not.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: NVIDIA XServer Settings - Black Screen Of Death

Dec 11, 2010

I had Ubuntu 10.04 running fine. Then I got curious about NVIDIA XServer.

"ATI Technologies Inc RV380 [Radeon X600 (PCIE)]" - Video Card

I opened it up, clicked a settings change, and said OK.
It said you need to update your blah blah blah.
Then it said blah blah blah doesn't exist.
Then it said it would create it for me.
Then I said REBOOT!

Now I get a black screen of death.

The only way I can get anything to happen on my monitor that comes from this computer is to boot into the Install Disk and say "TRY UBUNTU".

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot With An I8xx Graphics Chip On 10.04 - Get Black Screen Of Death

May 26, 2010

I'm having no end of problems trying to get 10.04 onto my older Toshiba Satellite A50 laptop that I use as a spare laptop round the house. The laptop previously dual booted with XP and Xubuntu fine. I wanted to give Lubuntu a go to see if it's performance was better on this older hardware. When installing I got the black screen of death, and also got the same problem with the Xubuntu CD. Research pointed me in the way of this article: [URL] I was able to boot the Lubuntu Live CD using the instructions outlined in method A.

Once installed however I rebooted and Grub seemed to be knackered. Just sent me to a recovery console of which I had no idea what to do. As I could no longer boot into Windows either I reinstalled Xubuntu 9.10 and all was fine. I decided yesterday to give it another bash this time connecting to my wireless from the live cd hoping it would download an update to fix this problem. Nadda, Grub this time did show and I was able to boot into XP, but upon picking my Linux distro I now get an unrecognised device error with a long string of charachters and then it dumps be back into the grub menu, choosing the recovery mode version does the same thing.

Ubuntu :: Blue Screen Of Death After Using 9.10 From USB Stick?

I created a USB stick with Ubuntu 9.10, used it to boot a dell Inspiron 1550 laptop which has WinXP. I tested 9.10, everything went fine out of the box so to speak. But when I went back and tried to boot XP again I got a blue screen. XP starts in safe mode and no apparent problems are detectable but it will not start in Win normal mode anymore.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 CD Gives Purple Screen Of Death

May 1, 2010

I've installed almost every version of ubuntu so far and four different versions on this computer, and I've never had a problem with the installation cd. The install cd on this new version however gives me only a purple screen of death with a white line down the middle. What is going on? The ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso file's md5sum is fine. I've burned it successfully on two different discs and still I can't install it. I've got a Dell 6400 with an nvidia geForce 7300 video card.

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Natty Narwhal - Purple Screen Of Death After Upgrade

Apr 28, 2011

I just upgraded from Ubuntu 10.10 to Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal and now I've got a purple screen of death. The download and install process all went okay, but when I restarted the computer through the upgrade dialogue to complete the installation process the system never came back online. When I turn on my computer it goes through the standard boot screen (F2 and F12 options shown while it boots the HDD, ODD, and wireless modem), and then it goes to a purple Ubuntu screen and doesn't do anything at all. I let it sit like that for 30 minutes before turning off the power and trying to boot again, but the same thing happened. I can press CTRL-ALT-DEL and the system will reboot, but nothing I know to do will get me past the purple screen and the Ubuntu logo. DI'm using a Dell Studio 1 desktop computer. It's got a 2.5ghz Pentium processer, 4gb of RAM, and a 400gb HDD. I don't dual boot, and Ubuntu is the only OS installed.

General :: Ubuntu - White Screen Of Death (Brand New System Install)

Dec 4, 2009

I am a Linux newbie and did one successful install Ubuntu 9.1 32 bit on my old desktop. Encouraged by that success (and the ease of it), this week I built my own system, which will be my primary system. I am trying to install Ubuntu 9.1 (AMD 64 version) and after the partition selection screen (I chose to partition the entire disk), I immediately get a white blank screen. Then nothing happens. I also tried with Ubuntu 9.1 32 bit, XUbuntu 9.1 64, Ubuntu 9.04 all had the same results.

Not sure if the hardware specs are required, but here they are:
1) Motherboard: MSI KA 780 G
2) Processor: AMD Athlon II X4 630
3) Memory: Corsair 2 x 2 GB, 800 MHz twinx 6400 c6
4) Harddrive: Hitachi sata 300, 1 TB

In desperation, I have started windows XP installation and that seems to progress fine at its leisurely pace. Its formatting the drive right now. During one of the attempts, it did install something*, since after that I see a new ubuntu partition after that. But when I boot from hard disk I get a black screen with cursor. I tried to search thru the forums and nobody seemed to have this exact problem, one guy got a white screen with cursor after a graphics card install, which is not the same. I dont want to go back to windows.

Ubuntu :: Memtest86 And Blue Screen Of Death,Can't Open Ubuntu After Installation?

May 22, 2011

I just recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my computer. Everything worked fine at first and then I started to fix all things I wanted to have on my laptop, programs and layout etc. And then I decided to restart the computer to make all the updates and installations work properly on my newly installed Ubuntu computer, but then it seems so that everything just crashed. When I started to computer again a blue screen saying "Memtest86 v4.10" came up. It is some sort of test of the computer's capacity I think. So I thought, ok fine, it is probably really good to do a test like that after a new installation. Like, standard procedure perhaps. It took 1 hour and then it said that no errors could be found on the computer and that I could click ESC to continue.

I did that but then when the computer restarted this blue screen showed up AGAIN and started up a new test (the same one)!!! I can't open up Ubuntu, I've tried several times. What should I do??? Is my computer broken now????

I was not wanting to install it at this moment so i was waiting for it to load then cancel it(just like a windows installation). It then froze and became pixelated with green and white colours.I thought it was nothing maybe just an error in teh disc. I waited 5-10 minutes then held the power button to shut it off. I then went to settings in the bios and changed it to boot from hdd first. After restart, windows began to load for like 3 seconds then blue screen. I dont know what went wrong or why this is happening.During installation of Ubuntu on my second try I keep getting:sudo: can't read /etc /sudoers: Input/Output errorsudo: no valid sudoers sources found, quittingWhat are the odds of me still having my windows 7 data?and could Hiren's boot cd help?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.4 Installation Gives Purple Screen Of Death?

May 6, 2010

I initially had problems with the install CD giving the purple screen of death (a screen of vertical purple lines), however I managed to press F6 and set nomodeset and then add "xforcevesa no splash --" to the boot parametres (I guess) and I was able to boot into the live CD. Now however, I've installed 10.4 and I'm back to the purple vertical lines. My Dell 6400 laptop has an nvidia 7300 video card which must be the problem. My question is, how do boot into some kind of low graphics mode so that I can install the proper video drivers? I've been pressing shift to get to the grub menu, but the recovery mode only gets me the purple vertical lines as well, and I don't know what I'm doing.

Fedora Installation :: Fedora 10 White Screen Of Death

I've been trying to install Fedora 10 Core to a new my machine. The live CD appears to boot, but once I get beyond the selection stage (installing or running Fedora from the disk first), I invariably get a fully white screen. Nothing I've tried to do changes this. Although I'm reasonably experienced with the command line, I've never tried to do a GUI-less install of a full OS, and am unsure how/if to begin with Fedora. Any suggestions for either fixing the white screen of death, and/or installing from the command line would be a big help.

Ubuntu :: Stuck On Black Screen With (mouse) Cursor After Grub And A Purple Screen?

Jul 21, 2011

I installed Ubuntu 11.04 today as the main OS on my laptop.I had deleted my XP partition, and repartitioned it according to a guide I had found. (http:url)......Basically it was setup like this: 500mb ext2 primary partition, has the grub folder, I believe this is either the '/' partition, or the '/boot' partition 2gb swap space logical partition

10gb ext4 logical partition -- this is either the '/' or the '/boot', it contains the 'bin, boot, cdrom, dev' etc folders 243gb (the rest of my hard drive, with the exception of a partition that contains documents and files from my XP OS, formatted to NTFS) ext4, this is the one that has all my desktop/documents/etc folders. After Ubuntu was done installing, I had some message pop up about installing an ATI proprietary driver for my ATI graphics card (an ATI Radeon HD 4330, I believe, I may have messed that number up). I installed it and rebooted, no problem.

Next, I had another update window pop up with 198 items checked and ready to download and install. I went through all of this, and rebooted, again, no problem.Next thing I did was install some apps that were essential for me to have to use for my work (an ide, chat programs, etc). No problem with any of that.Last thing to install was the OSE Virtualbox, and then I installed WindowsXP Pro and Windows Vista Business, then installed the guest addition addon for VB. This all worked without any issues whatsoever.

Time goes on, and I notice my computer is heating up much more than (seemingly) normal. I begin to wonder if its my graphics card. So I shut down the computer and let it cool down. Reboot, and no problem, still working fine. Then I opened a couple of apps and tried a simple game (can't remember the name) I believe it was a simple 3d topdown, as I wanted to test my graphics card. This is where things seemed to start to go wrong. My laptop began hanging, not even allowing me to access the terminal via ctrl+alt+f2. The screen flashed and I saw the blue/green/grey fuzz that I get when the graphics card is starting to heat up too much. Then everything hangs and I can't do anything at all, including move the mouse. I did a hard reboot (I believe this is what you call pulling the plug/pressing the power button, correct me if I'm wrong). I then rebooted, saw a chkdisk, then it booted seemingly normal, but it hung right after the purple screen after the grub screen.

This is pretty much where I'm at right now. I strongly suspect the fault is with the ATI drivers, but have been completely unsuccessful in my attempts to fix it. I've googled just about everything I could think of, along with searching these forums. I've tried just about everything listed in the forums, but to no avail.I've tried the commands that are supposed to purge the ati drivers, but all I get are errors that say they can't remove the 'virtual drivers'.

Right now I'm booting off a live cd, so I know the computer still works fine, just not my actual installed OS. I'd really like to get the issue resolved without having to reinstall, as it took quite awhile just to get it usable in the first place, but this has already taken so much time, I may just resort to that if we can't solve it any other way. Got too much work to catch up on as it is.As a re-instated note, perhaps if you have any tips, but not particularly about fixing the OS, my laptop (I'm strongly guessing my graphics card) is heating up much more than normal, compared to that when XP was installed. Is this more than likely just a driver issue, as is the rest of it? Also, I did have Compiz installed, though I didn't choose for it to be installed, I believe it came pre-installed. I've heard it could cause some issues, though I have no idea as to the validity or relation to this particular issue.

Edit:
I just remembered while searching for a solution, I found a post somewhere that said something about the information not being sent to the monitor from the graphics card properly, thus no desktop. I'm guessing that'd still fall under the driver issues, but again, I'm unsure. I would think that wouldn't be entirely true anyway, since I can still see my mouse fine, just no desktop, only a black screen.

Ubuntu :: Crashing - No Reason Monitor Will Go Black Then On The Screen It Will Be At A Terminal Screen

Nov 30, 2010

I have Ubuntu 10.04 running kernel .26 installed on my Dell Dimension 2350 with 512mb of memory. The problem I have been having is, When I am using the computer mostly Internet stuff for no reason the monitor will go black then on the screen it will be at a terminal screen, kind of like when you start up the computer, I don't remember what is all on it but the last thing in the list was: checking battery state: OK after that the screen will flash in multiple colors and then it goes into a loop of just black screen than a colorful flash and back over to a black screen. the only way I can fix that is by holding down the power button. this will happen mostly on face-book on the games and just on the profile page, but it does happen just checking my gmail or play solitaire it does this around 4-8 times a day.
