Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Natty Narwhal - Purple Screen Of Death After Upgrade
Apr 28, 2011
I just upgraded from Ubuntu 10.10 to Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal and now I've got a purple screen of death. The download and install process all went okay, but when I restarted the computer through the upgrade dialogue to complete the installation process the system never came back online. When I turn on my computer it goes through the standard boot screen (F2 and F12 options shown while it boots the HDD, ODD, and wireless modem), and then it goes to a purple Ubuntu screen and doesn't do anything at all. I let it sit like that for 30 minutes before turning off the power and trying to boot again, but the same thing happened. I can press CTRL-ALT-DEL and the system will reboot, but nothing I know to do will get me past the purple screen and the Ubuntu logo. DI'm using a Dell Studio 1 desktop computer. It's got a 2.5ghz Pentium processer, 4gb of RAM, and a 400gb HDD. I don't dual boot, and Ubuntu is the only OS installed.
i feel like i should be on the payroll if I have to work so hard and long to get these things working. (ranting stopped, for now) I have ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330 GPU in my Dell Zino system and finished the upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 LTS and got the purple screen of death. tried the intel recommended fixes but got nothing. I cant even get into recovery mode.
I've installed almost every version of ubuntu so far and four different versions on this computer, and I've never had a problem with the installation cd. The install cd on this new version however gives me only a purple screen of death with a white line down the middle. What is going on? The ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso file's md5sum is fine. I've burned it successfully on two different discs and still I can't install it. I've got a Dell 6400 with an nvidia geForce 7300 video card.
I initially had problems with the install CD giving the purple screen of death (a screen of vertical purple lines), however I managed to press F6 and set nomodeset and then add "xforcevesa no splash --" to the boot parametres (I guess) and I was able to boot into the live CD. Now however, I've installed 10.4 and I'm back to the purple vertical lines. My Dell 6400 laptop has an nvidia 7300 video card which must be the problem. My question is, how do boot into some kind of low graphics mode so that I can install the proper video drivers? I've been pressing shift to get to the grub menu, but the recovery mode only gets me the purple vertical lines as well, and I don't know what I'm doing.
I upgraded from Maverick a few days ago, and ever since, OpenGL effects are getting disabled by KDE with a message stating that the effects were making the machine slow. Switching to Xrender works fine, but XRender isn't as advanced as OpenGL.
My recently installed OS, keeps on displaying a GRUB menu instead of the normal screen and has an option of normal start up or ( I forgot what it's called but some sort of .. ) Fixing Option. It has worked before but yesterday the error wouldn't stop coming up after it randomly crashed while the computer was working. I haven't tried it again today, but will do soon. The first option of normal boot up said something like 0x01002 is in use and didn't load.
The second one occasionly came up with an option for normal boot after it had 'Fixed' it. But most times it would come up with some terminal like dialogue, then stop and not load, don't know if it crashed or what ? Hope this is enough information for you, but as I'm only 12, I don't have a clue what to do, except the obvious option of rebooting again and again.
If you had or have a black screen or purple screen problem in Natty, add support by subscribing to this Launch Pad Bug: Xorg's HAL causes Purple Screen or Black Screen on GDM startup. [URL]
Through helping people with these problems in the Ubuntu Support Forum (Installations and Upgrades) and through this sticky: [URL] this bug (above) seems to be where this problem is originating. It affects this problem with all video hardware types. As I said in this bug report: "Normal users should not have to be highly skilled "techies" to manually bypass a broken part of a system to make a released distribution work during an install or distribution upgrade"
I have a Dell Inspiron 5150 which I first upgraded 'over-the-air' to Narwhal. This completed with no errors. After reboot, the screen momentarily displays some icons before reverting to the background - this loops round every few seconds.I've subsequently tried installing with the CD which runs through with no errors, but does the same thing when it's finished - blink... blink... blink...
I thought before breaking my working PC, i thought id better ask the question. Is it possible to download a GDM log in theme and get it running on Natty? I've googled loads of possibilities, but got a feeling that as Natty is GDM2 it can't be done.I've downloaded Tweak and been able to change the log in wallpaper and the icon, but i want one of those fancy log in screens that ive seen on Gnome eyecandy.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat and I'd like to know when does the update manager upgrade the system to Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal. I do not want it to do the upgrade too early,as this might cause problems.I heard they're going to release Natty by the end of April, when it passes the beta stage but it will take 3-4 months for the bugs to be fixed. Also, please answer my other thread,it has new posts: [URL]
I just upgraded to Natty Narwhal. When I first logged in a pop-up dialogue appeared saying that my computer did not fulfil the hardware requirements to run Unity. That cannot be possible this is the output of the lscpu command:
Code: Architecture: i686 CPU op-mode(s): 32-bit CPU(s): 2 Thread(s) per core: 2 Core(s) per socket: 1 CPU socket(s): 1 Vendor ID: GenuineIntel CPU family: 15 Model: 3 Stepping: 4 CPU MHz: 2999.900 L1d cache: 16K L2 cache: 1024K
This is is the output of the free command: Code: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 1251612 916332 335280 0 74220 383576 -/+ buffers/cache: 458536 793076 Swap: 860156 0 860156
Summarized that is: Pentium 4 3GHz core running two threads 1.2GB of ram
i have lenovo g450 and has installed windows 7 ultimate for a long time ago. i want to try ubuntu natty in my lenovo with dual boot system. after loading natty disk and click on install ubuntu it said that this computer currently has no detected operating system and i have to choose erase disk and install ubuntu or something else. i have created drive c with 50 gb for dual boot.
I'm attempting to install Natty Narwhal Desktop 32-bit on my Dell Dimension 4700. I get to the screen with various options (Install Ubuntu, Test Memory, etc.) but on choosing boot from disk or install, I just get a black screen. Any ideas what might be the problem? I'm don't have much experience with Ubuntu, so a simple explanation would be preferred.
After upgrading to Natty Narwhal my Crypt Keeper app will not launch. I am now unable to access secure files. Has anyone had this issue after their upgrade to Natty Narwhal? If so, How were able to resolve this issue.
I can't seem to get Ubuntu to run on my old Dell Dimension 2300. It boots to a purple screen then it goes to a black screen with a load of writing nothing else happens after this screen. [URL] Could someone advise how I can get it to work?
I created an installation CD and even a usb stick of Ubuntu Lucid Lynx and Natty Narwhal and I keep having freezes during installation.
1. Set my BIOS to boot on CD/ usb stick 2. My computer starts to boot from CD/ usb stick 3. Ubuntu logo plus 5 dots screen shown 4. After that I am shown a snowy green screen with white lines running lengthwise and it freezes.
I already tried creating a new CD and usb stick after re-downloading the .iso installation file and creating the process of creating an installer over and over but still the same problem. Is it a hardware problem or my installer is the problem. I tried installing my old CD of Ubuntu Jaunty that I requested from Ubuntu a long time ago and I can install it without any problems. I am using Jaunty right now...........
I have been using ubuntu wel a long time now and I know my way around in linux but I recently updated my laptop from ubuntu 10.04 to ubuntu 10.10 all went fine until I had to restart my laptop. I got a purple screen (loading screen) with 4 dots and a oldskool like font which said: Ubuntu 10.10 Right after that the screen goes purple and its like the system halts I hear no login sound etc just a purple screen. So I did a clean install from the 10.10 live cd which booted perfectly fine and the system was also useable like before. But when I installed the system and rebooted it again no problems.
But when I tried to install the proprietary nvidia driver (the recommended one) I got the same problem again the purple screen. After searching a while on the internet I only found posts which had the problem with ATI cards but my laptop is fitted with a Nvidia Geforce 9300 M card. So I tried several things like removing the xorg.conf (read it somewhere) which ofcourse did not work, and booting in graphics fail safe mode which worked. So the point is in 10.04 and 9.10 I CAN use my video card drivers but not in 10.10 is there a solution to this problem? I am talking about the 32 bit version of ubuntu and here's my system hardware profile:
Intel core 2 duo t7350 @ 2,0 ghz / 3mb l2 cache 2 GB DDR3 ram 160 gb hdd Nvidia 9300m gs Chipset: I dont know sorry Model: Samsung R710
I just finishing burning ubuntu on my laptop and was getting ready to partition my disk to allow space for ubuntu. I restarted my computer and when it was restarting ubuntu logo came up (as it booted from the disc). I was not wanting to install it at this moment so i was waiting for it to load then cancel it(just like a windows installation). It then froze and became pixelated with green and white colours.I thought it was nothing maybe just an error in teh disc. I waited 5-10 minutes then held the power button to shut it off. I then went to settings in the bios and changed it to boot from hdd first. After restart, windows began to load for like 3 seconds then blue screen. I dont know what went wrong or why this is happening.During installation of Ubuntu on my second try I keep getting:sudo: can't read /etc /sudoers: Input/Output errorsudo: no valid sudoers sources found, quittingWhat are the odds of me still having my windows 7 data?and could Hiren's boot cd help?
'm trying to duel boot windows 7 and ubuntu 11.04 on an Acer Aspire 5736, but when I try to boot from the cd (which I burned with InfraRecorder) it first goes to a black screen with a blinking under score in the corner, then to a purple screen with a couple symbols at the bottom, and then the screen goes black and nothing else ever happens
I run a live cd I downloaded, right? Everything goes fine - it installs with no real issues whatsoever, when all of a sudden after the install it boots to nothing but the famous black screen with a white, blinking dash. So, what do I do? It was installed on a Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop, and I ended up completely wiping the XP drive to do it
I've just upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04 and sorted out the mess that came along, now there's just one thing left and I'm all set. I have always used Emulate3Buttons and had it working on 10.10 earlier as well but now I can't seem to get it going.
I've edited my xorg.conf like this: Code: Section "InputDevice" # generated from default Identifier "Mouse0" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "auto" Option "Device" "/dev/input/mouse0" Option "Emulate3Buttons" "yes" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" EndSection Nothing happens if I write "yes" or "no" (or true/false).
i heard about that Ubuntu now finally releasing it's new version of Ubuntu distribution. It will launch on 28 april.. how to use this version on ubuntu 10.10 is there any possible strategy to switch on Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal
I've been running Ubuntu on my laptop for a while, and I recently upgraded from 10.04 in Ubuntu using System -> Admin -> Update manager. However, when I now run System -> About Ubuntu, I'm told I'm running Natty Narwhal 11.04, rather than Ubuntu 10.10 which I was aiming for. I never noticed this earlier, though... I guess it's a month or two since I upgraded.Did something go wrong in the update and cause this to happen by mistake?I there a way for me to downgrade to 10.10?
I have Ubuntu 11.04 Natty and when I started it the first time it wasn't connected to the Internet. I refreshed and did the basic stuff. But it wasn't so simple. I went to Network Tools and Natty didn't recognize my router. I am not connected through Ethernet either. I can't do/can't afford to do an ethernet hookup. I don't want to spend my time running a cable to the floor below my CPU. Anyway, I have a Broadcom 4306 Network Controller. I am currently using my Windows to post. Also, I can't get drivers from Synaptic or anything (that includes NDISwrapper). Can I use Windows drivers without downloading NDISwrapper? I'm so confused and starting to think this is hopeless. Even worse: I don't have a disk for installing Ubuntu, I downloaded online alongside Windows with Wubi, Again, my network controller is a Broadcom 4306.
How do I enable wireless in Natty Narwhal? When I type in "lshw" it tells me: *-network=DISABLEDHow do I enable wireless? I'm going crazy trying to figure it out! Also, My Ubuntu has absolutely no Internet. Not even an Ethernet connection. I'm using my Windows for my Internet right now.
When I try to start Geany, it crashes with a segmentation fault. The current version is 0.20. I've tried to downgrade it to 0.19, but it didn't solve the thing.
I would just like to inquire how some members have versions of ubuntu 11.04.I am actually posting from England, but as far as I was aware this version is not available until april of 2011.Is the source code maybe available through certain channels.Or do you guys get distros a few months before us here.Because according to my vers 10.10,I have the latest upgrade.
I'm having no end of problems trying to get 10.04 onto my older Toshiba Satellite A50 laptop that I use as a spare laptop round the house. The laptop previously dual booted with XP and Xubuntu fine. I wanted to give Lubuntu a go to see if it's performance was better on this older hardware. When installing I got the black screen of death, and also got the same problem with the Xubuntu CD. Research pointed me in the way of this article: [URL] I was able to boot the Lubuntu Live CD using the instructions outlined in method A.
Once installed however I rebooted and Grub seemed to be knackered. Just sent me to a recovery console of which I had no idea what to do. As I could no longer boot into Windows either I reinstalled Xubuntu 9.10 and all was fine. I decided yesterday to give it another bash this time connecting to my wireless from the live cd hoping it would download an update to fix this problem. Nadda, Grub this time did show and I was able to boot into XP, but upon picking my Linux distro I now get an unrecognised device error with a long string of charachters and then it dumps be back into the grub menu, choosing the recovery mode version does the same thing.
