Ubuntu :: Unity - Hide The Top Panel Or (better) Remove It Completely (I Can Live Without Global Menu)

May 2, 2011

To make Unity useful for me I need to make some changes. I wonder if it's possible to:

1. Hide the top panel or (better) remove it completely (I can live without global menu).
2. Make the Unity Launcher work like a panel - so it won't be possible to move windows behind it.

Ubuntu :: Unity Global Menu Button Locations

I've switched my non-maximized window button locations back over to the right with gconf-editor but i'd like to change the global menu buttons over to the right as well.I've had 20 odd years working that way. I can't seem to find an option in gconf-editor and if google has the answer I'm not using the correct search terms.

Ubuntu Installation :: Global Menu Bar Seems To Have Disappeared In Unity (natty)

Jun 23, 2011

after a lot of testing and tweaking done in natty 64 bit while running as live usb, i decided to install it clean on my laptop. everything is working fine (courtesy the time i spent to get things work in live usb)
i installed gnome shell too and now have an option of unity / gnome shell and classic.

today being the 2nd day, i got the following problems.

a) the global menu that was being displayed in unity is not working. its funny to note that firefox global menu is working but not for nautilus or any other apps.

b) conky is displayed in unity and classic desktop but not in gnome-shell. i also followed this link to get it working in start up = > [URL]

still not working. when i issue the top command, i can see that conky is listed in the processes but not displayed..

Ubuntu :: Unity - Global Main Menu Doesn't Autohide When Playing Sims3 Fullscreen?

When I run Sims3 in Wine, the game happily switches video mode and runs fullscreen... but the global menu bar doesn't autohide, and there's no way to get it to hide manually. I've checked the Unity plugin in the compiz settings control panel, but there don't seem to be any settings at all for the global main menu there.

Ubuntu :: Move Menu From Top Panel Back To Its Program In Unity?

May 7, 2011

I decided to persist with Unity having spent until today launching in an Ubuntu Classic session. The thing that bugs me the most is the fact that each program has its menu (ie File, Edit etc) in the top panel. This may be fine for netbooks but not my laptop.I just launched Tomboy, which startde with its window in the bottom right of the screen, however to get to the programs menu I have to move the cursor all the way to the top right of the screen - miles.

Ubuntu :: Unity - Mythtv Or How To Hide Unity Launcher

May 8, 2011

Just moved to Ubuntu 11.04 with unity and only have one problem...For most of my desktop needs I prefer to have the Unity Launcher up all the time (fullscreen apps don't cover it), and have set this option with ccsm.

However, when I watch mythtv, it is also under the launcher (and the top panel as well). How can I force mythtv to cover the launcher?
What I really need is a keyboard shortcut to hide the launcher, but the only shortcut is for "show launcher". (I guess the devs assumed everyone would want it hidden by default).

This, by the way is not my usual way for viewing mythtv. I have a projector attached to the desktop PC and it doesn't get a Unity Launcher by default (in Twinview), so no probs. However, occasionally I want to watch something on my computer screen, and that is when this issue arises.

Ubuntu :: Netbeans Menu Doesn't Go On Global Menu?

May 8, 2011

Netbeans menu doesn't go on global menu. It stays in application. Well, OK, I can live with thatAfter dragging anyting inside Netbeans (windows, menus, ETC), Unity Launcher stops dodging windows and autohiding. It just sits on the screen. It starts to behave normally only after I restart Netbeans. Now- that's pretty annoying.EDIT: Even worse: If I exit Netbeans during debugging session, I must exit Firefox as well before launcher starts behaving normally again. Now, that's entirely unacceptable. Good enough reason to remain on "Ubuntu Classic" (what's left of Gnome that is), and eventually switch do different distro or even... ungh... WAMP.

Ubuntu :: Set Terminal To Completely Hide Itself While It's Running A Program?

Jan 19, 2009

It really bothers me that when I start a program through the terminal it takes up space with the terminal that's tied up with the program, and the program itself. I know how to keep it from tying up the terminal, but when it devotes the terminal, I like that it gives output if the program crashes. Is there a way I can set a terminal to completely hide itself (off the desktop and the taskbar) while it's running a program, then reappear once the program is closed?

Fedora :: Completely Hide Gnome Panels Without Deleting Them

Feb 25, 2011

I am trying to completely hide the gnome panels on my desktop. When using auto-hide there is still a visible line of about 1 pixel, and the panels are still there anyways. I have gone into gconf-editor and changed the autohide size to 0 and it still doesn't completely hide it or make them so when i hover near them they don't appear. I am also not looking to completely delete the panels either. I went into gconf again and blanked out the required_components field, (didn't turn out the way i expected, lol), and had to start gnome-panel manually afterwards and lost a lot of functionality in the OS.

I found this tutorial last year for sending gnome-panel to the widget layer for Ubuntu, but cannot get it to work in Fedora. This works perfectly in Ubuntu (once you log-out), but it doesn't work in Fedora. Does anyone have any suggestions on how i can this exact same thing to work in Fedora. It seems like it tries to work, but maybe my syntax is wrong or something.

This is very annoying as the launcher appears above the windows I am working on as shown in the screenshot:

I have tried changing the launcher hide options in ccsm but it doesn't seem to make any difference. At the moment it is set to autohide.

Ubuntu :: Can't Hide The Launcher In Unity 3D - Stays On Top Of Running Program

May 23, 2011

I can't hide the launcher in unity 3D. In 2D, it works fine, hides when i open a program, looks normal, everything. In 3D, it stays on top of whatever program I'm running. What I've tried Reinstalled unity 2D. (apt-get remove, apt-get install) For whatever reason, when I log into 3D without 2D installed, it looks like gnome, but the screen is garbled, the images disappear, menus come up as plain black squares, i literally can't even open a program. Once I install unity 2D, 3D works fine, but I can't hide the launcher. Messed around with CCSM. I tried each option under hide launcher in unity plugin (never, autohide, dodge windows, dodge active windows). None of them change anything. Updated everything through update manager (last night actually). Both 2D & 3D look and work fine, no lag or sluggish behavior. All of the effects look normal. I just can't get rid of the big launcher covering up everything I do! I've just been using 2D, although I would like to use 3D.
