Ubuntu :: Unity - Global Main Menu Doesn't Autohide When Playing Sims3 Fullscreen?

May 28, 2011

When I run Sims3 in Wine, the game happily switches video mode and runs fullscreen... but the global menu bar doesn't autohide, and there's no way to get it to hide manually. I've checked the Unity plugin in the compiz settings control panel, but there don't seem to be any settings at all for the global main menu there.

Ubuntu :: Unity Global Menu Button Locations

May 1, 2011

I've switched my non-maximized window button locations back over to the right with gconf-editor but i'd like to change the global menu buttons over to the right as well.I've had 20 odd years working that way. I can't seem to find an option in gconf-editor and if google has the answer I'm not using the correct search terms.

Ubuntu Installation :: Global Menu Bar Seems To Have Disappeared In Unity (natty)

Jun 23, 2011

after a lot of testing and tweaking done in natty 64 bit while running as live usb, i decided to install it clean on my laptop. everything is working fine (courtesy the time i spent to get things work in live usb)
i installed gnome shell too and now have an option of unity / gnome shell and classic.

today being the 2nd day, i got the following problems.

a) the global menu that was being displayed in unity is not working. its funny to note that firefox global menu is working but not for nautilus or any other apps.

b) conky is displayed in unity and classic desktop but not in gnome-shell. i also followed this link to get it working in start up = > [URL]

still not working. when i issue the top command, i can see that conky is listed in the processes but not displayed..

Ubuntu :: Unity - Hide The Top Panel Or (better) Remove It Completely (I Can Live Without Global Menu)

May 2, 2011

To make Unity useful for me I need to make some changes. I wonder if it's possible to:

1. Hide the top panel or (better) remove it completely (I can live without global menu).
2. Make the Unity Launcher work like a panel - so it won't be possible to move windows behind it.

Ubuntu :: Netbeans Menu Doesn't Go On Global Menu?

May 8, 2011

Netbeans menu doesn't go on global menu. It stays in application. Well, OK, I can live with thatAfter dragging anyting inside Netbeans (windows, menus, ETC), Unity Launcher stops dodging windows and autohiding. It just sits on the screen. It starts to behave normally only after I restart Netbeans. Now- that's pretty annoying.EDIT: Even worse: If I exit Netbeans during debugging session, I must exit Firefox as well before launcher starts behaving normally again. Now, that's entirely unacceptable. Good enough reason to remain on "Ubuntu Classic" (what's left of Gnome that is), and eventually switch do different distro or even... ungh... WAMP.

Ubuntu :: Unity Launcher Does Not Autohide

May 3, 2011

Recently upgraded to 11.04, and I am happy with the intent but unhappy with the bugs.

I have a specific problem at the moment, the unity launcher will not auto-hide, which means I cannot access the left side of any application (such as the back button for instance). Does anyone know of a fix?

A restart fixes the problem, but If I don't want to do that then I have to set the auto-hide option in Compiz to never, so that application windows stop at the launcher, and don't dissapear underneath. (setting back to other auto-hide options doesn't work)

Ubuntu :: The Gnome Main Menu Arrow Doesn't Work

Jan 7, 2011

I've just read this thread: [URL] and the information it seems is a bit out of date and a risk to use. I felt more comfortable with the .gtkrc-2.0 file suggested a few posts in, but it doesn't work, in that it turns the panel to the Raleigh-themed one which we always get when there's some kind of error in a gtkrc file, as those of us that have dabbled in theming will know.

It's comical that this minor but unnecessary eyesore goes back so far and hasn't been dealt with, but is there any new info about this, a new method, for 10.10? I don't want to be doing compiling or to risk messing things up, as has been caused by the directions in the other thread, because I've been experimenting with different distros for two years, just bought a new hard drive, and have settled now.

Maybe someone here knows why the .gtkrc-2.0 file hasn't worked for me? I twigged that the panel (though not the rest of the theme, i.e. in program windows) had turned to Raleigh because of those ugly handles pertaining to the Window List panel applet and the one to the left of the notification area. I used the exact file in that other thread, I tried logging out and in and then rebooting, and I even tried pasting the file's contents into the gtkrc file of the theme I use. If you need to know, I'm using the 'Lush' Metacity window border and the 'Redmond' engine.

Ubuntu :: Cannot Install .deb Files Any More - Software Center Doesn't Start From Main Menu

Oct 31, 2010

Yesterday, I made a clean install of 10.10 (64 bit). Among others, I installed World of Goo from a .deb file, and it worked fine.

Today, I wanted to install Skype from the .deb file. When I double-click the file, I get a "wait" cursor for ~20 sec, then nothing happens. When I try to start Software Center from the Main menu, I also get the Wait cursor and then nothing happens.

I started software-center from the terminal and the software center opened, despite some warnings in the terminal. I could install some random application from the list. Then I tried to start

Code:

And the software center window showed, with Skype selected. When I clicked Install, there was an error message. Despite the "no such a file or directory" part, I am sure that the file name is correct (I tab-completed it).

This is the error message I received when I tried to install:

Code:

Here are the warnings I received when I started the software center:

Code:

There seems to be a programming error in aptdaemon, the software that allows you to install/remove software and to perform other package management related tasks. Please report this error at [url] and retry.

General :: Main Menu Doesn't Show My App Launcher (desktop File) / Why Is So?

Aug 6, 2010

I've just started out learning to program and I'm making a "Radio Scheduler" for my brother as a mini project. I wanted to make an "install" script, which would add an item to Ubuntu's Main Menu. I believe all that is necessary is to create a .desktop file and place it it /usr/share/applications/? This seemed to work fine when I tried it out on 10.10, but I've now tried it on two 10.04 systems (one virtual) and despite it being in the applications folder (so it moved in okay), it isn't showing up at all in the menu. code...

I'm not entirely sure about some of that (categories for instance), as I just used another file as a reference. But it seemed to work fine on my 10.10 system, so I don't understand why it won't show up on the others? Should be in Sound & Video if I'm correct... I'm still pretty new to Linux, so sorry if I've got anything completely wrong.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 Global Menu Only When Maximized?

Apr 27, 2011

I actually like some aspects of the global menu, but the reality is that a better solution for non-maximized windows is to just have the menu in the titlebar, and have title hide when you hover over it to reveal the menu, just like it does for maximized windows. You aren't losing any screen space with this solution.Having to click on a window, then go all the way back to the top left of the screen is hardly a convenience, especially when using a touchpad.
