To make Unity useful for me I need to make some changes. I wonder if it's possible to:
1. Hide the top panel or (better) remove it completely (I can live without global menu).
2. Make the Unity Launcher work like a panel - so it won't be possible to move windows behind it.

Just moved to Ubuntu 11.04 with unity and only have one problem...For most of my desktop needs I prefer to have the Unity Launcher up all the time (fullscreen apps don't cover it), and have set this option with ccsm.
However, when I watch mythtv, it is also under the launcher (and the top panel as well). How can I force mythtv to cover the launcher?
What I really need is a keyboard shortcut to hide the launcher, but the only shortcut is for "show launcher". (I guess the devs assumed everyone would want it hidden by default).
This, by the way is not my usual way for viewing mythtv. I have a projector attached to the desktop PC and it doesn't get a Unity Launcher by default (in Twinview), so no probs. However, occasionally I want to watch something on my computer screen, and that is when this issue arises.

I just moved my bottom panel to the right side of the screen and set it to auto-hide., The panel hid it'self but will not un-hide when I move the mouse to the edge of the screen... I tried to re-boot, but the panel is still "stuck"Is there an easy way to fix this? Or will I have to manualy delete the panel and make a new one

I've just installed Ubuntu 11.04 and have come across a strange bug, where after using Ubuntu for a while, the launcher suddenly appears and will not hide. This occurs when my mouse is no where near the launcher. I have a duel screen display.
This is very annoying as the launcher appears above the windows I am working on as shown in the screenshot:
bug.jpg
I have tried changing the launcher hide options in ccsm but it doesn't seem to make any difference. At the moment it is set to autohide.

I love this unity launcher panel on the left. but i think it's taking too much valuable space on my small screen so i set up a super small app dock with everything i use but i can't seem to completely hide this unity launcher the only options i find in CCSM are "always show" "autohide" and two other things i can't seem to understand; anw i haven't found a "Always hide". is there a way to do that ?

The Compiz Setting page for Unity will not let me set the launcher to autohide or other hiding option, and the Experimental page will not let me reduce the icon size. The lack of hiding is another as the left edge of windows can disappear under the the Launcher.

I can't hide the launcher in unity 3D. In 2D, it works fine, hides when i open a program, looks normal, everything. In 3D, it stays on top of whatever program I'm running. What I've tried Reinstalled unity 2D. (apt-get remove, apt-get install) For whatever reason, when I log into 3D without 2D installed, it looks like gnome, but the screen is garbled, the images disappear, menus come up as plain black squares, i literally can't even open a program. Once I install unity 2D, 3D works fine, but I can't hide the launcher. Messed around with CCSM. I tried each option under hide launcher in unity plugin (never, autohide, dodge windows, dodge active windows). None of them change anything. Updated everything through update manager (last night actually). Both 2D & 3D look and work fine, no lag or sluggish behavior. All of the effects look normal. I just can't get rid of the big launcher covering up everything I do! I've just been using 2D, although I would like to use 3D.

Running The GNOME Panel 2.30.0, and since I'm using Avant Window Navigator, I'd like to hide the last panel.
I want to keep the shortcuts (like alt+f1, f2, etc...) so killing it isn't what I need.
I've been looking around but I always end up getting a 1px panel on top. Anyone has any suggestions for this?

I recently upgraded to 11.04 and I've been tweaking Unity to get the desktop just the way I like it. I've come across two minor problems though:
1. When I tweak the icon size settings in the Unity tab of CCSM, the icons do not change size; they remain at the default "48" setting regardless of what I type in.
2. When I set the Unity launcher to auto-hide (also in the Unity tab of CCSM), it stays at the default "dodge windows" setting.
Are there any workarounds to change these settings when tweaking them in CCSM's interface does not work? (Or is there some trick I don't know to get CCSM to work properly?)

I find that when I use Amarok my Unity side bar gets jammed in position, and won't hide away. This is really irritating as the play button is under the bar so I can't click it! The side bar is stuck in position whether Amarok is maximised, in a window or minimised, or even if I close Amarok and just leave it playing (Amarok isn't even listed on the Unity bar in this case). The only way to make the side bar vanish is to completely quit Amarok. Is there anything I can do to force the bar to hide?

I've upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 some weeks ago and after some minor tweaking everything has been working fine. But all of a sudden, it seems after some package upgrades, I'm experiencing strange behavior: The first thing I noticed is that after reboot the default application that should be kept in the Unity Launcher have all disappeared. The unity launcher doesn't hide itself anymore. The unity launcher does not react to changes I make via the 'System Settings'->'compizConfig settings manager'->'Ubuntu unity plugin' menu (icon sizes in launcher, hiding method, etc.). Even after logout/login or reboot the changes aren't applied, although the corresponding settings in the configuration menus remain changed.
One application that used to work as a charm started giving the following error on startup: The program 'VESTA' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)'. (Details: serial 489 error_code 3 request_code 138 minor_code 4) Since yesterday everything was still working properly and today I get this strange behavior, it seems that something must have changed in between. The only changes on the system in the last 24 hours are the upgrades of the following packages:

I like my bottom panel to auto hide. I have this setup on 2 computers. On one computer, it's much faster with hiding/showing than the other computer.Could it be a performance thing that effects it? mean, the one that's quicker is a quad core with 4gb of ram, whereas the one that's slower is a pentium 4 with 1gb of ram.

I have 2 drives formatted NTFS, which I'm mounting with /etc/fstab to ~/Movies/ and ~/Music/ and an EXT4 partition on my primary drive for games, mounted to ~/Roms/ and I would like for these drives to NOT show up in the side panel of nautilus.
I've been doing some looking around, and what I've found so far is that supposedly if you mount a partition/drive somewhere besides /media/ nautilus will ignore it. I'm finding this not to be the case, and it's driving me bonkers. here's my fstab:
Code:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'blkid -o value -s UUID' to print the universally unique identifier
# for a device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name
# devices that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).

I like to autohide my panel. But for some reason, it won't show unless I mouse over one of the bottom corners of the screen. The whole bottom edge where the panel hides should summon it if I mouse over, and I have been able to do this before, but now, after a system update, it only appears when I mouse over those bottom two corners. Does anyone else get this, or know how to fix it?

Is there a DBus command (or some other way from the command line) to toggle auto-hide on a panel in KDE Plasma? (I'm running KDE 4.6.)
I have a game I run in WINE that doesn't work right if it's autohidden and it would be nice to run it from a script that takes care of that for me.

I'm currently using Unity 0.2.46 on Ubuntu 10.10. Installed from a ppa. The only way I have found to add an application launcher to the panel is to actually launch the app, then right click it's icon on the panel and click "Keep in Launcher". This is great but I've noticed at least one of my applications (Mumble) doesn't give me that option. Is there an alternative method? (see screenshot for example)

I'm using Natty and I'm thoroughly enjoying Unity, but I've noticed that when I close Banshee, so that it is still playing music in the background, I can't drag any other window out of maximization state. btw, I don't know if "dragging out of maximization" sounds ambiguous, I mean to say that I drag the top panel and the window stops being maximized (yes, i just tried to bastardize a bastardization).

I use to be able to add applets to the top panel in gnome in previous versions of Ubuntu (<11.04). I understand the Unity environment, which I generally like, has changed how one adds things to the top panel. Now we have indicators? Is there a good description of the functionality of these indicators: how to add/remove indicators, where one can find new indicators, etc. I ask because I have been having trouble adding indicators. I tried to add the system monitor indicator. I initially added it by installing it with apt-get. But every time I reboot it has disappeared and I have to run it again from the menu. I can't figure out how to make it permanent.
