Ubuntu Installation :: Global Menu Bar Seems To Have Disappeared In Unity (natty)
Jun 23, 2011
after a lot of testing and tweaking done in natty 64 bit while running as live usb, i decided to install it clean on my laptop. everything is working fine (courtesy the time i spent to get things work in live usb)
i installed gnome shell too and now have an option of unity / gnome shell and classic.
today being the 2nd day, i got the following problems.
a) the global menu that was being displayed in unity is not working. its funny to note that firefox global menu is working but not for nautilus or any other apps.
b) conky is displayed in unity and classic desktop but not in gnome-shell. i also followed this link to get it working in start up = > [URL]
still not working. when i issue the top command, i can see that conky is listed in the processes but not displayed..

I've switched my non-maximized window button locations back over to the right with gconf-editor but i'd like to change the global menu buttons over to the right as well.I've had 20 odd years working that way. I can't seem to find an option in gconf-editor and if google has the answer I'm not using the correct search terms.

I am running Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal on Virtualbox 4.0.6 (host OS is Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick) and for some reason the Global Menu does not follow the theme selected in appearances. By this I mean that no matter what theme I select the Global Menu resembles something like a Windows 95 theme, I presume a default basic theme. This also applies to the 'Home Folder' icon in the launcher and the corresponding icons in the home folder itself.
Has anyone else come across this and does anyone know how to correct it? I have also posted on the Virtualbox forums, but judging by the number of people logged on at the time I fancy my chances here better.

I've just noticed this morning that the number shortcuts that normally appear when holding the super key to show the Unity launcher are not there. The s, a and f shortcuts remain however. Also, just pushing the numbers that should be there doesn't do anything.
I've just upgraded from Maverick to Natty and things were mostly working fine until this. I'm not sure what changes have happened between now and then and I don't remember any major changes in that period.
I just tried to take a screenshot and opened GIMP to save it and I checked again and they have reappeared. So, I guess the new question is why did this happen? How can I solve this problem if it happens in the future? Should I mark this as solved? I don't really understand what happened either way.

To make Unity useful for me I need to make some changes. I wonder if it's possible to:
1. Hide the top panel or (better) remove it completely (I can live without global menu).
2. Make the Unity Launcher work like a panel - so it won't be possible to move windows behind it.

When I run Sims3 in Wine, the game happily switches video mode and runs fullscreen... but the global menu bar doesn't autohide, and there's no way to get it to hide manually. I've checked the Unity plugin in the compiz settings control panel, but there don't seem to be any settings at all for the global main menu there.

I recently upgraded my clean install Ubuntu Studio 10.10 64bit to Natty 11.04 and whilst everything is working well (except for having no plymouth boot splash - but I'm looking into this) I have noticed that when I log in to the "Ubuntu" desktop (with the Unity launcher and Menu bar in the top panel) I can't seem to change how the time and date is displayed. It seems to be stuck showing 24 hour time only with no date no matter which setting I select in the 'Clock' tab of 'Time & Date Settings' menu.
The clock applet works perfectly when I log into the 'Ubuntu Classic' desktop and I am able to display the date and weather ok.
I have a laptop which I upgraded from Ubuntu 10.10 64bit to 11.04 as well and it doesn't have the same issue.
I thought it might have been a rouge Gconf setting so I dumped my entire gconf using
Code:
gconftool-2 --dump / > ~/Desktop/allgconf.entries
then restarted into recovery and removed my ~/.gconf folder entirely, rebooted again and logged back on. Apart from losing some settings like Evolution and Networking, which I reloaded, and my theme going back to the default theme, the problem still exists.

I've just installed Natty Narwhal onto my laptop, but I cannot find Unity 3D, only 2D. I've installed the propriety NVIDIA drivers, but there still is no 3D option.I've also seen no one who likes Unity, but I do.

I installed the Global Menu Bar applet for my top panel, thus removing the menu bar from most, if not, all of my apps on Ubuntu. I removed the applet, mainly because of how God-Awful and inconvenient it was. Now, I don't have any menu bars on my apps!

X is working, I get a desktop, all updates are current, just no Unity menus/window/widgets/whatever, blank desktop with single mapped network folder and no working keyboard shortcuts after initial login. I upgraded on Alpha 2 and it ate my desktop, never has given it back for 3 months. I assumed eventually the upgrades would fix it. Looked into ditching Unity and doing GDM, but thought I'd wait it out, ran dpkg-reconfigure unity and it did nothing, can't find any relevant errors in the logs, where should I be looking and/or what should I be doing? Running lots of servers on this box and have dual-boot, otherwise I'd probably torch it and start over.

If I just upgrade my 10.10 to 11.04, will it replace gnome with unity? I tried unity before and it is not satifying because it is not customizable, I feel I have less options and less power over what my interface looks like and how it behaves. Same case with gnome3.I'm wondering if when I upgrade to Naughty will I have to go through a lot of messing around with packages and configuration files to get back to gnome2 ? Do we have an option when we upgrade to choose between Unity, Gnome2 and Gnome3?

I was running Ubuntu 10.4 netbook version (with Gnome) on my Dell Inspiron 910 and yesterday it told me there was an upgrade available, to Natty. I followed the links, did the download, and left it to install overnight. When I got up today, it said it had a problem, because an application was using a file it needed. I thought I had closed everything before I started the process. I acknowledged the message, and proceeded to restart.
I ended up with the standard 10.4 Ubuntu screen, but with no tool bars, status bars, or anything. Just the wallpaper. Keyring login came up and I signed in, wireless said it was connected. So it looks like things are working, just no UI as such. Poked all the screen edges with the mouse, but nothing popped out.
Ctrl><Alt><Del> brought up the logout screen, and if I clicked on Help, I could ultimately get Firefox to run. (Note: the Help screen talks about Gnome, but it had the new popout scroll bars).
If I hold down <Shift> on startup, I get the GRUB menu. I am running linux generic 2.6.38-8 , but I am not sure where to go from there. Running dpkg didn't help.

I've just upgraded my Ubuntu version a week ago and got a problem that the Unity UI won't running after upgrade. My laptop is Dell Inspiron 14R which is i think is more than capable for running Unity 3D. When I rebooted after upgrade there was just a blank wallpaper screen, without Unity interface at all.

Netbeans menu doesn't go on global menu. It stays in application. Well, OK, I can live with thatAfter dragging anyting inside Netbeans (windows, menus, ETC), Unity Launcher stops dodging windows and autohiding. It just sits on the screen. It starts to behave normally only after I restart Netbeans. Now- that's pretty annoying.EDIT: Even worse: If I exit Netbeans during debugging session, I must exit Firefox as well before launcher starts behaving normally again. Now, that's entirely unacceptable. Good enough reason to remain on "Ubuntu Classic" (what's left of Gnome that is), and eventually switch do different distro or even... ungh... WAMP.

I upgraded to Natty yesterday and my system boots into it ok but I don't get a grub menu (and so no other options like recovery mode which I really need right now). I tried purging grub and re-installing it on /dev/sda but still no joy. Here's the info from the Boot Info Script. I've also tried uncommenting GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480 in /etc/default/grub but that doesn't help. How I can get the menu back?
Code:
Boot Info Script 0.56 from 8 February 2011
=> Grub2 (v1.99) is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks at sector 1 of the same hard drive for core.img. core.img is at this location and looks for (,msdos1)/boot/grub on this drive.
=> Windows is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdb .....
Devices which don't seem to have a corresponding hard drive: sdc

I've been using Ubuntu for about 5 years now. I just installed it on one of my neighbors computers.I tried deleting an applet from the top menu bar and the entire menu bar disappeared. I click on the add new menu bar and it just throws something up on the side. I'm using 10.04. I never had this problem before.

At the end of installing crossover pro 9.1, I was provided the following message:
Code:
cxmenu:error: unable to parse '/etc/xdg/menus/unity-place-applications.menu': Invalid string in comment field [Ln: 157, Col: 8]
I opened unity-place-applications.menu and looked at that line. Starting with line 155:
Code:
<!-- System Tools-->
[Code]...
I'm guessing that the comment lines that start with just "--" are generating the error. Does anyone know what the section is and what it should look like for the crossover menu items, such as installing windows software?

I just upgraded to 11.04 today, and was playing around with the compiz-fusion settings. The first thing I checked was the fade to desktop box, and that froze up my computer. I let it sit for a little bit, but eventually got bored and just turned off my computer via the power button. When I started it up, both the tool bar on top and the launcher on the side had disappeared, and I don't have a clue how to get them back.

When logging in, I suddenly got a message saying "It appears you do not have the hardware to run Unity", and it initialized the old GNOME 2 desktop.
Ofcourse I have the hardware to run Unity (an NVIDIA GTX 580), and it has worked normally until now...
Now Unity won't come back, even after logging out / in or rebooting. The video driver works normally and NVIDIA X Server Settings does not show that there's anything wrong with my video card or drivers.
Is this a bug? Did this happen to anyone else? How do I get the Unity desktop back?

My unity toolbar has disappeared. The old style ubuntu panels have appeared in its place. This was happening on occasion before, but restarting the computer would get rid of it. This time unity has been gone for about a week, through many reboots, driver re-installations, etc.I just installed a new graphics card, which is working fine on the windows partition. Unity would fail to load on occasion with the old card, too. I know the new card works with Ubuntu, because Unity was working fine with it for about a week.
I'm running Ubuntu 11.04. The old card was a GeForce 7900 GT, the new one is a low-profile Sparkle GeForce 8400 GS.

When I first boot up. I get the GRUB command line. What happened to the boot menu? And I can boot up into my Windows partition just fine. But when I try the other partitions i get "Unknown file system" or when I try to boot into the other ntfs drive, I get "BOOTMBR missing", but yet it does not mean Windows, because i can boot that just fine. I can't find my Ubuntu partition. How can I get the GRUB boot menu back?

i have lucid lnyx installed as my main system and added natty on a seperate drive. after installing, the new grub detected lynx & i was able to boot into each without any problem. after doing some tweaking on natty (changed run level), it didn't boot properly so i reverted to the old config via rescue disk. after rebooting, the old grub menu didn't show & it loaded lynx automatically.
i tried the suggestion from another post changed the hidden menu and updated grub but it didn't detect natty (below).
