Ubuntu :: Set Terminal To Completely Hide Itself While It's Running A Program?

Jan 19, 2009

It really bothers me that when I start a program through the terminal it takes up space with the terminal that's tied up with the program, and the program itself. I know how to keep it from tying up the terminal, but when it devotes the terminal, I like that it gives output if the program crashes. Is there a way I can set a terminal to completely hide itself (off the desktop and the taskbar) while it's running a program, then reappear once the program is closed?

Ubuntu :: Can't Hide The Launcher In Unity 3D - Stays On Top Of Running Program

May 23, 2011

I can't hide the launcher in unity 3D. In 2D, it works fine, hides when i open a program, looks normal, everything. In 3D, it stays on top of whatever program I'm running. What I've tried Reinstalled unity 2D. (apt-get remove, apt-get install) For whatever reason, when I log into 3D without 2D installed, it looks like gnome, but the screen is garbled, the images disappear, menus come up as plain black squares, i literally can't even open a program. Once I install unity 2D, 3D works fine, but I can't hide the launcher. Messed around with CCSM. I tried each option under hide launcher in unity plugin (never, autohide, dodge windows, dodge active windows). None of them change anything. Updated everything through update manager (last night actually). Both 2D & 3D look and work fine, no lag or sluggish behavior. All of the effects look normal. I just can't get rid of the big launcher covering up everything I do! I've just been using 2D, although I would like to use 3D.

General :: Hide Terminal Window Whn Running Script

Mar 14, 2011

This is my first post and I am new on Mac OSX. I have create an app using python/py2app.

App is working fine but I need little modification.
1. My app name is test.app. Inside I have Contents/MacOS/test(executable)
2. I rename test(executable) as launch.
3. I create a simple bash script with name test(set executable permission) in Contents/MacOS directory inside app.
4. This script set same environment vars and finally execute launch executable.
5. This works but problem is that a terminal window comes up when launching app.

Is it possible to run the script(test) in such a way that it should not show terminal window?

Example:nohup my-program &What I want is to modify the program so it can be used as a HUB interface. Ubuntu :: Display Title Of Running Program When Using Gnome-terminal?

Feb 12, 2011

Usually I open 5 terminals. And since each of those 5 terminals prints it's tile as: "username@username-laptop: ~" It becomes very hard to see what is what. So, I would like my terminal to always change it's title automatically to the program that I am currently using.
So, if I type "irssi", the title of my gnome-terminal-window, should change to: "irssi" for example.

General :: Location Of A Program Running In Terminal - Launched From Panel?

Dec 17, 2010

I am using DreamLinux. I have pinned a program, that runs in terminal, to the launcher in the panel on desktop. The program's executable file (name: feap) is located in /home/User/feap2.2 After I added the launcher to the panel that runs the file in terminal, the program asks for the input file (text file with alot of commands) when run. By default the program accepts the files that are located in the same directory i.e. /feap2.2 , so I placed the input file in the same directory.

However when I run the program from the panel, and give the input file name, it says no such file exists. Then I gave the file name with full path, but problem was not solved. I have tried alot e.g. placed the input file at other locations, but all in vain. I have set all input file permissions to be accessible by User as well. I will be much relieved if someone suggests where to place the input file for the such program running in the terminal launched from panels?

P.S: If I open terminal, go to the directory (/home/User/feap2.2), run the program's exe file, and then give the file name, it accepts the input file and it give results.

Fedora :: Completely Hide Gnome Panels Without Deleting Them

Feb 25, 2011

I am trying to completely hide the gnome panels on my desktop. When using auto-hide there is still a visible line of about 1 pixel, and the panels are still there anyways. I have gone into gconf-editor and changed the autohide size to 0 and it still doesn't completely hide it or make them so when i hover near them they don't appear. I am also not looking to completely delete the panels either. I went into gconf again and blanked out the required_components field, (didn't turn out the way i expected, lol), and had to start gnome-panel manually afterwards and lost a lot of functionality in the OS.

I found this tutorial last year for sending gnome-panel to the widget layer for Ubuntu, but cannot get it to work in Fedora. This works perfectly in Ubuntu (once you log-out), but it doesn't work in Fedora. Does anyone have any suggestions on how i can this exact same thing to work in Fedora. It seems like it tries to work, but maybe my syntax is wrong or something.

2. Make the Unity Launcher work like a panel - so it won't be possible to move windows behind it.

Fedora :: How To Hide The Program Launcher In Menu Bar

Nov 21, 2009

1st, I got the OS install. I just want to hide some program launcher from menu bar. In the old Gnome, it work this way, I put the mouse on the menu bar, and then right click, choose preference then I can hide everything I wanna hide. But I can not do that on F12 any more, I tired to refer to Gnome instruction manual on Gnome web site. It seems like they did not change anything on Gnome 2.28. Since the instruction remain the same.

2nd I also want to ask, how do I change the default interface language setting in F12? In previous version I just need to do that in SYSTEM-->Preference. But I can not see the option any more either.

3rd I can not install the NVIDIA proprietary driver even though I got GCC and kernel development header in place. The install log said:" The binary file is not for the kernel" Well, I just use the regular i686 kerenl as usual. It does not make sense it will not work.

I got the driver running by using the rpmfusion driver, not the one from Nvida

By the way, The nouveau driver in F12 works far from OK on my GO 7300. It just like a slave driver that whip the GPU at full out all the time, let alone it does not have 3D capability.

The live cd does not include GCC and kernel development header. That made me feel like walking on the moon but forgot to put the gravity suite on.

Ubuntu :: After Starting A Program That Displays Graphics Some Windows Will Go Completely Black?

Jul 22, 2010

After running for a while, often after starting a program that displays graphics, such as Shutter, Gimp, Ocular, or maybe simply having previews in Dolphin (as some of my folders default to large previews)most menus, and some windows will go completely black. Some simply grey out (only ksystemlog does this that I have noticed so far)Blindly clicking anywhere on top title bar has no effect (would expect minimize/maximize etc to work if hitAlt-leftmouse or alt-middlemouse will allow window move/resize - black actively conforms to new window size/shape.

Often this blackening is preceded by a loss of all global hotkeys, which may not be related. With no visible menus or buttons, and with no hotkeys I am forced to hit the PC power button and allow kubuntu to shutdown. If I am lucky and hotkeys still work i can simply log out with ctrl-alt-shitft-del and logging in again fixes the issue.Linux betlogbox 2.6.32-23-generic #37-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jun 11 08:03:28 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Ubuntu :: Run Program In Terminal With A Terminal Specific Profile From GUI

Dec 12, 2010

I'd like to run a program [URL] from the GUI menu (yes, I know I can run it from the command line). I've gotten this to work by using a menu entry (see attached screenshot). The command is:

Code:

gksu chkrootkit

with the option for Type: was selected as Application in Terminal However, when chkrootkit is finished, the terminal immediately snaps shut according to the profile selection: When Commands Exits: Close terminal What I'd like to do is create another profile that causes the terminal to be held open (see screenshot) when the command exits and be able to choose that profile from the GUI Menu entry. I believe the command when using the CLI is:

Code:

gnome-terminal --profile=<profile_name>

how do I incorporate this within the Command entry line of the launcher?
