I have dual boot (wubi) Windows XP. It was working smooth until I upgrade ubuntu 9.10. At the boot screen I choose Ubuntu, then it ask me wich version, then it freeze. I tried the recovery version, but then it ask me for a user ID login and password. At this point I'm able to enter the user , but it don't type anything on the password and keep asking me to enter the user id and password again, and again.
View 2 RepliesI switch on the PC and it loads the Grub splash screen. However, it does not automatically boot the top entry after two seconds as it's supposed to and just hangs. I hit enter to boot it and it attempts to but after a few seconds gives me the error "unable to mount file system....a maintenance shell will be started"
This occurred after I was using it and then everything suddenly froze up on me and I had to crash out Now this!
After running "sudo apt-get update" I try and run "sudo apt-get upgrade" but I get the following errors:

The error is: You (user) are not allowed to access to (crontab) because of pam configuration. I did just recently do an update but I am not sure why this is acting up. I also tried it as root and it also failed with a similar message. I had several crons that ran daily and they are not currently working also. I have selinux Disabled and it has been that way for some time.
lately i notice that when i add a new user withthe useradd and passwd command, and then try to login using this new account, am being prompted with a message,saying ' you cannot access /home/newuser. that the account doesnot have permission on his home directory. i have even tried go give the user(john) ownership over his home directory with the #chown -R john:john /home/john

Issue: Unable to resize the FS after extending the root LV since it is mounted. After extending the LV, online resizing of the FS was not supported and the root filesystem could not be unmounted while it was in use. On rebooting, I got a kernel panic error. In runlevel 1, I couldn't run chroot, couldn't find the /etc/fstab, root FS could not be mounted, fsck did not run (tried block 31 for second copy of superblock using dd count=1 bs=4k skip=31 seek=1 if=/dev/sda2 of=/dev/sda2), couldn't find any rpm on installation media to install unix-utils rpm. I am running the latest suse release downloaded directly from their website. I ran the installation after buring the dvd and everything seemed to be working fine. after the installation i ran updates and used it for a little bit. When i shut it down that night and went to restart it I got an error that stated the OS wasnt there. I then went through the installation and everything and it retained the information from the installation before (web history etc.) but for some reason every time I reboot or shut it down the system is not able to read the startup information from the hard drive and will not come on without me re installing it.

1. Read the User Id of the process. User_ID= getuid()
2. Printing Capabilities(Permitted, Efffective, Inheritable)of the process
3. Setting UID = 0, using setuid(0)
4. Calling the prctl(), function to keep capabilities
5.Switching the UID from root to User_ID of the process
6. What we have now is a process with root capabilities as a non root user
7. On printing Permitted, Effective, Inheritable capabilities, I get the following
--> Permitted = 0xfffffeff = Effective
Inheritable = 0x0; with UID = 1001;
8. I then try and set the system time with --> system("date -s 10:00");
9. I get an error: date: cannot set date: Operation not permitted
10. I am unable to understand as to why I cannot set the time even thought the capability bit CAP_SYS_TIME in the Permitted and Effective sets are SET.
So I was messing with my sudoers file and messed it up. I found this solution:http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=140852But the grub menu doesn't appear on boot. Google finds that ESC, SPACE, TAB, and several other keys are supposed to bring the menu up. However none work and I can't edit the grub configuration without being able to sudo.

I have Ubuntu Mavrick installed on windows vista using wubi. it has been running smoothly since RC, when i installed it. now, after I updated using Update Manager last night I was asked to reboot. Upon rebooting i was not able to use ubuntu. the Ubuntu option is there on the windows boot menu but after i select it gruub does not appear. instead it reboots again. is there any way to fix this problem so i can use ubuntu again? if not how can i recover my ubuntu files and folders? Please help because i dont really want to reinstall after all the tweaking and stuff.

If i leave it the screen just goes black I can get to ttyl by using ctrl&alt&f7 and log in.but thats about it startx just tells me no screens found I expect because xorg isn't used. If i go into recovery mode, failsafe graphics won't load either. So i select netroot and the enter startx which will give me a root desktop. I tried reinstalling grub, but no change. Not sure where to go from here i suspect it is something to do with plymouth? but i am no expert even tho i've been a user for 4 years
I just finished upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04 and restarted my system. It had been working fine, but now, after the POST test, the screen goes black, then a box floats around the monitor saying "Input Not Support." Pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL reboots the system to the POST screen, then the same thing happens. No hard drive activity, no boot, nothing. I really don't want to lose everything on my hard drive with a fresh install.
My system, a Compaq Presario, has diagnostics, so I ran that at startup, and it says I have no active partitions.
Applied the Lucid Lynx 10.04 over the weekend.
Since then - I am unable to burn DVDs, although I can successfully read DVD's.
Everything worked fine before the upgrade.
Under Lucid Lynx I am able to burn CD's (both data files and .ISO) so it isn't the hardware.
I have tried Brasero and k3b as burners - they issue messages that the burner doesn't like the medium, which is standard DVD-R.
Bear in mind that I could burn similar DVDs *before* the upgrade...
Any help or suggestions on how to fix this please?
yesterday I upgraded my hardware, my specs are as following:
AMD Phenom II X4 965 (new)
Asrock K10N78D Mainboard (new)
1 TB Harddrive (Western Digital WD10EARS) (new)
Palit Geforce 460 GTX
3 GB DDR2-800 RAM
First I installed Windows 7 which worked without any problems. After that I wanted to install Ubuntu 10.10. (32 bit) The installation worked fine and the first boot also worked without any problems. Since then I get strange errors nearly everytime I try to boot up. I'm posting a "screenshot" as an attachment which shows the bottom end of the output before the system stops to work (Alt+Print+B is still working). I also get the same error when trying to boot up from a Live USB-Stick. It's quite random, around 25% of my tries are successful and the system boots up normally.
Things I already tried:
- Testing my RAM (no errors)
- Booting with just one RAM block (same error, also tried a different one)
- Installing 10.04/BIOS Reset/Installing from CD (same problem)
So what do you think? A hardware defect? Then I wonder why Win7 works fine.I would like to post a complete boot log, how can I do that?
I just updated my ubuntu 10.10 installation inside windows (wubi) and after that I shut down my computer. Later on I switched it on again and was unable to boot ubuntu. Ususally I first get the 'Windows boot menu' and after i select ubuntu i get the grub menu. Now, when I select ubuntu in the windows boot menu I dont get grub after that but instead the computer restarts. Is there any way to fix this issue without reinstalling ubuntu.

In the past I just reinstalled Ubuntu and after several tries with running Update Manager things were working again.This time I applied another recommended set of updates, including a kernel upgrade and got the usual "Kernel Panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unkown-block(0,0)"After booting from a LiveCD and running boot_info_script I rebooted again and this time I am getting tons of errors which seem to be generated while running grub. I have two RAIDed disks (mirrored and showing OK during POST). The disk shows above as a6071eb5-6fc6-45b3-babb-c1a2156278d7. Ubuntu 10.10 installs fine from a LiveCD, but gets broken by kernel updates. I can see the original 1 TB disk when I start with the LiveCD and I can access all the files.

I know this is coming because of improper shutdown. Also I think that the new ubuntu was not yet installed as in the boot menu it was showing old images only..I had Widows 7 also.
I have an AMD64 system, which I recently upgraded to Lucid 10.04. The system now fails to boot after the upgrade. Recovery mode makes no difference.
When I attempt to boot, I get a series of messages about file systems needing checking, and also some messages from ureadahead-other. (process terminated status 4), though a post here says that status 4 is in fact not an error.
I have sucessfully booted the Lucid desktop install CD in live CD mode, mounted the filesystems, and started parts of my system in a chroot. In that system I tried running an update, and removing plymouth, but it made no difference. how I can get my system working.
I did take a backup of /etc before I upgraded, so I could get back to a karmic install, but the pain in doing so would be considerable, so I would prefer to avoid that if possible.
I have an MSI U100 netbook triple booting between Win XP, Ubuntu 9.04 and OSX. Grub is used as boot loader. I want to upgrade my ubuntu install but I am a bit scared that grub will be messed up.

So for each upgrade I've done the last 2 years I had to follow again these instructions to rebuild the initrd.
I've just finished the upgrade from F9 to F10 and I faced the following friendly message:

Allright, not a surprise in fact. While rebuilding the initrd I discovered there's no more /lib/i686/nosegneg/ directory in Fedora10's initrd. Therefore I reinstalled the libm-2.9.so library as follows:

I searched for posts reporting problems with segfault in ld-2.9.so but didn't find anything. So now I'm with a successfully upgraded fedora 10 system that refuses to boot.
By the way, I've done the upgrade using the netinstall CD, all the packages have been retreived online without errors and I think I've therefore the latest versions.

Having just installed fc13 and downloaded the KDE package I attempted to log out as user and back in as root, but I keep getting a message about the wrong password. This is odd as the same password works in terminal if I try to become a SuperUser. I have tried turning off SELinux to no avail. I cannot log in from cold as root,only as user.

I recently performed a grub-pc update, but I didn't know what it was asking me to do during the process itself of updating the process.
It asked me at one point where to install grub, and I selected all my partitions because it suggested that if I didn't know. I think that may have damaged my windows section, which was also selection.

In the last few weeks I upgraded my Ubuntu from 8.04 to 8.10 to 9.04. No problems, everything went well. But yesterday I tried to upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10. Everything seemed to go OK until the upgrade was finished and I had to reboot. After the reboot, no Ubuntu anymore... I get GRUB, but when I continue to boot the latest kernel, I don't see any harddisk activity anymore after about 2 seconds.
Here on the forums I read that one should run the boot_info_script when having boot problems, so I already did. I booted the system with a 8.04 live USB stick. And here is the result of the boot_info_script:

Yesterday my wife was using our laptop and an upgrade manager dialogue box came up. She clicked yes to install upgrades, but at some point during this process the machine froze. She restarted, and I haven't been able to successfully boot since then. the final screen when trying to boot from the hard drive reads:

I'm slowly getting the hang of Ubuntu. By now I know enough that a Live CD can fix most problems. So that's where I went after doing several searches about the error messages that were appearing. The menu screen works, but I can't get it to boot into the "Try ubuntu" mode. I tried changing the boot parameters to no avail. As the boot tries to load I can see a line by line report of errors- some are I/O errors and are in white, but many were in red, which seems bad from my mostly ignorant perspective. I saw lots of SQUASHFS errors among other things. I took a snapshot of the screen that was displayed when the boot failed- it's attached to this post (lots and lots of text to be typed otherwise). The reason I know it failed is because I've tried a half dozen times with the same exact result- once I let it sit for an hour+ just to make sure it was really frozen (a bit optimistic).
Relevant info: Ubuntu is running on a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop. I think it's version 9, but could be 10. The Live CD I'm using is version 10 burned 1/4/2011. I'd be thrilled to hear any suggestions that folks might have.
