Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Boot Wubi After Upgrade

Oct 16, 2010

I just updated my ubuntu 10.10 installation inside windows (wubi) and after that I shut down my computer. Later on I switched it on again and was unable to boot ubuntu. Ususally I first get the 'Windows boot menu' and after i select ubuntu i get the grub menu. Now, when I select ubuntu in the windows boot menu I dont get grub after that but instead the computer restarts. Is there any way to fix this issue without reinstalling ubuntu.

Ubuntu Installation :: Wubi Boot Failure After Kernel Upgrade

Nov 27, 2010

I've been running Ubuntu 10.04 AMD64 on our home theater PC through a wubi installation. Yesterday the system update installed a new kernel and today there is a problem booting the computer so I'm reluctantly using Windoze to type this. there isn't much information: the computer has always booted fine before the kernel update. When I select Ubuntu in the boot menu the screen goes black and the computer restarts. No error messages, no GRUB menu, just a blank screen before restart.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To CD Boot For Non-Wubi Install

Dec 27, 2010

I've been unable to do a non-Wubi install of U 10.10 desktop 32 bit. My setup:

HP p6240f , Intel Core2 Quad Q8300 2.5 GHz, 4 MB L2 Cache, 1333 MHz FSB

Currently, I have a clean install of Windows XP (updated) on my desktop. Previously, I used a clean install of Windows 7, but ran into the same problems below. My U install problems are:

1.) Live CD will not boot upon restarting PC. As per the U documentation web site (URL) , md5sums confirmed that proper .iso copy was downloaded and burned to CD. (However, see log file below for md5 error)

2.) "Installing CD boot helper" does not work. I receive the following error message: "Could not retrieve the required installation files", and it refers to a log file. An excerpt of the log file is below.

Ubuntu Installation :: Karmic (wubi Install) Won't Boot After Dist-upgrade?

Jan 11, 2010

i have Karmic installed with Wubi inside a Vista NTFS filesystem. Yesterday i did an apt-get dist-upgrade and Karmic never booted again. It won't even show the grub kernel list, it just shows some really quick text that vanishes before i can even figure out what it is and then drops to some sort of grub shell and then i can't figure out what to do.

I could boot a livecd and mount my karmic install and everything seems fine, the filesystem is clean and all that. But how do i fix it so it can boot again?

Does anyone here know wtf happened? Was there a bad upgrade or something?

Ubuntu :: Unable To Boot Wubi

May 23, 2011

I'm a bit of an Ubuntu virgin. Well, I've had a dabble in Ubuntu before and it was enjoyable, though I panicked when I accidently deleted the bootloader for Windows so I decided to get rid of Ubuntu. Which comes to my next point. [EDIT] When I deleted the bootloader, I used a Windows 7 Recovery CD which got me back on to the OS - which I think messed up the Ubuntu part of the bootloader [/EDIT] I've currently tried to install Wubi 5 times now - I've created a dedicated partition of 20gb for it as well. Now it downloads Ubuntu and installs it correctly (from what I can see) but when I come to select Ubuntu on start up (the option IS there).. I get a this black screen:

Quote: [URL] And unfortunately I don't know what to do afterwards. Is there any chance of someone knowing what to do with this? I've read many forums and I don't usually come on to a forum to actually ask for help - but it's time, I want to use Ubuntu! I've always wanted Ubuntu as my main OS.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Boot After Upgrade To 10.10?

Feb 28, 2011

I updated my pc today, all went well no errors during upgrade. But I am unable to boot. I get the splash screen with Ubuntu and 4 coloured dots, then it goes and i get a page of txt. *starting apparmor profiles skipping profile in /etc/apparmor.d/disable: usr.bin.firefox plymouthd: ply-keyboard.c:384: ply_keyboard_watch_for_input: Assertion `keyboard != ((void*)0)' failed. *Setting sensors limits rather than invoking int scripts through /etc/init.d, use the service ( utility, e.g service s20plymouth-splash start Since the script you are attempting to invoke has been converted to an upstart job. you may also use the start ( utility, eg. start s20plymouth-splash Start: uknown job S20plymouth splash

If i leave it the screen just goes black I can get to ttyl by using ctrl&alt&f7 and log in.but thats about it startx just tells me no screens found I expect because xorg isn't used. If i go into recovery mode, failsafe graphics won't load either. So i select netroot and the enter startx which will give me a root desktop. I tried reinstalling grub, but no change. Not sure where to go from here i suspect it is something to do with plymouth? but i am no expert even tho i've been a user for 4 years

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Boot After Hardware Upgrade?

Oct 13, 2010

yesterday I upgraded my hardware, my specs are as following:

AMD Phenom II X4 965 (new)
Asrock K10N78D Mainboard (new)
1 TB Harddrive (Western Digital WD10EARS) (new)
Palit Geforce 460 GTX
3 GB DDR2-800 RAM

First I installed Windows 7 which worked without any problems. After that I wanted to install Ubuntu 10.10. (32 bit) The installation worked fine and the first boot also worked without any problems. Since then I get strange errors nearly everytime I try to boot up. I'm posting a "screenshot" as an attachment which shows the bottom end of the output before the system stops to work (Alt+Print+B is still working). I also get the same error when trying to boot up from a Live USB-Stick. It's quite random, around 25% of my tries are successful and the system boots up normally.

Things I already tried:

- Testing my RAM (no errors)
- Booting with just one RAM block (same error, also tried a different one)
- Installing 10.04/BIOS Reset/Installing from CD (same problem)

So what do you think? A hardware defect? Then I wonder why Win7 works fine.I would like to post a complete boot log, how can I do that?

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Boot After Kernel Upgrade

Feb 13, 2011

I had problems with booting my PC after kernel updates several times. In the past I just reinstalled Ubuntu and after several tries with running Update Manager things were working again. This time I applied another recommended set of updates, including a kernel upgrade and got the usual "Kernel Panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unkown-block(0,0)"After booting from a LiveCD and running boot_info_script I rebooted again and this time I am getting tons of errors which seem to be generated while running grub. After a few minutes of 'error: syntax error' and 'error: Incorrect command' scrolling through my screen, grub gives my a grub> prompt... Not what I expected! Here is the output of the boot_info_script:

Code:

Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010
============================= Boot Info Summary: ==============================
=> Grub 2 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks on the same drive in

[code]...

I have two RAIDed disks (mirrored and showing OK during POST). The disk shows above as a6071eb5-6fc6-45b3-babb-c1a2156278d7. Ubuntu 10.10 installs fine from a LiveCD, but gets broken by kernel updates. I can see the original 1 TB disk when I start with the LiveCD and I can access all the files.

Fedora Installation :: Upgrade F9 - F10 - Unable To Boot ?

Jan 22, 2009

It's become a tradition since I've installed FC6 on my machine: after each Fedora upgrade, the PC hangs at reboot because of a badly make initrd !

I found this post a while ago that helped me to solve the problem by rebuilding the initrd with the right librairies in it: [url]

So for each upgrade I've done the last 2 years I had to follow again these instructions to rebuild the initrd.

I've just finished the upgrade from F9 to F10 and I faced the following friendly message:

Code:

Allright, not a surprise in fact. While rebuilding the initrd I discovered there's no more /lib/i686/nosegneg/ directory in Fedora10's initrd. Therefore I reinstalled the libm-2.9.so library as follows:

Code:

Once the initrd rebuilt, I rebooted and faced a second friendly message:

Code:

I searched for posts reporting problems with segfault in ld-2.9.so but didn't find anything. So now I'm with a successfully upgraded fedora 10 system that refuses to boot.

By the way, I've done the upgrade using the netinstall CD, all the packages have been retreived online without errors and I think I've therefore the latest versions.

How to making this F10 box to start ?

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Upgrade - With Image #22 And Unable To Boot Windows

May 17, 2010

I recently performed a reinstall of ubuntu after mucking up my partitions, and I am running it dual booted with windows 7.

I recently performed a grub-pc update, but I didn't know what it was asking me to do during the process itself of updating the process.

It asked me at one point where to install grub, and I selected all my partitions because it suggested that if I didn't know. I think that may have damaged my windows section, which was also selection.

I've attached the output for:

Code:

Problem symptoms:

1) Weird upgrade error in apt-get
2) Unable to boot windows 7
3) Unable to activate proprietary drivers
4) Perpetually being reminded to restart

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade Wubi To Real Partition?

May 25, 2011

I've been using Ubuntu NR 10.04 LTS for almost 1 years now with dual-boot with Windows XP by Wubi and I had great time using it. Now I want to experience the full potential of Ubuntu by creating another partition just for Ubuntu alone since I heard Wubi makes a lot of trouble and works slower than independent Ubuntu install.

Here's my question. Should I really create another partition to get full potential of Ubuntu or should I stick with wubi? I haven't got any problem running Ubuntu with Wubi but my video playback sometimes gone haywire which didn't happen in windows especially .mkv files

If I should create a partition, how do I want to shrink Drive C: to get enough free space for another partition? Mine was Windows XP so it doesn't have shrink option in Disk Managament unlike Vista/7.

And last question... Can Ubuntu run Window games or MMORPG smoothly like Counter Strike and WarcraftIII? I did try to play it before but it run too slower in Ubuntu. I used Netbook Eee PC 900HA, 2GB RAM, dual-boot Windows XP Home Edition with Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.04 Lucid Lnyx LTS.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Broke After Wubi Upgrade / Sort It?

Aug 18, 2010

I beleive I had version 9.x installed. I upgraded once and everything was fine. I went the upgrade manager again and it found some more upgrades. The upgrade messed with grub. It then told me there were no new upgrades. Then I rebooted and it says

Try (hd0,0): NTFS5

Then the screen clears and there is some text I can't read and then it says command not found. Then it reboots.

Is there a way to fix this?
If not is there a way to recover the files from the disk image file.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Wubi Upgrade Failed / Freezes At Battery Check?

May 6, 2010

I have a Wubi installation, and the upgrade to 10.04 froze. I didn't note down the point at which it froze.

When I tried to reboot, I got the grub screen, and when selecting Ubuntu I get lots of text messages scrolling by, but it freezes at battery check.

The machine boots fine into Vista.

Rather than spend a lot of time trying to figure out what went wrong in the upgrade, my inclination is to delete the Wubi installation from within Windows, and then do a fresh install of 10.04 under Wubi. Is this feasible/sensible?

There are a handful of files I would like to salvage from the prior installation, however. Could I do that with a Live CD since the prior installation was under Wubi?

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade Lucid From Wubi Install To Real Partition?

Jun 4, 2010

I have been using Lucid Lynx for almost 2 weeks and have got everything working, thanks to the "ubuntu" spirit in this forum. Now I am ready to upgrade my Wubi install to its separate partition. I have searched the forum and googled to find a way to do this, but I am still stuck.

I used lvpm (despite knowing that there is no confirmation of its working on Lucid Lynx), it didn't work. The installation happened alright but it wasn't able to show up the login screen (GDM?). It was stuck around the screen before that (Xsplash?).

There is this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=438591 that explains this process very well but remains silent on Lucid Lynx version.

I am sure there must be many other first timers who wanted to get their feet wet the easy way using wubi and would like to make it "permament" OS on their computers.

Is there anyone who can suggest if :

1. There is any way I can still use lvpm to transfer wubi install to separate installation (Ubuntu 10.04 release) ?

2. Any other way I can do this ??

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Boot With CD Or Wubi

Sep 1, 2010

I have recently discovered ubuntu and like it's elegance and simplicity and want to learn more about it "hands on". To this end I have tried to put it on one of my PC's running the Vista SP2 OS...When i try to install it with the CD the drive spins up then starts "hunting"..next the PC shuts down..black screen monitor.no KB or Mouse..the monitor flashes a box saying "power saving mode" then all is dead except for the power button being lit..I have to manually turn the PC off to recover...Next i did a D/L of wubi and rebooted as advised.Selected ubuntu on the BIOS and had the same final result as B4 with the CD. I have D/L and burned 2 CD's, one with my XP machine and the other with the Vista machine..Both CD's work as advertised on my XP machine (i did the "live" install) but not the Vista. The Vista machine is an HP with: AMD Athlon 64x2 3800+ CPU..3 GB of RAM..250 GB HDD. I do not like Vista ( i inherited the machine) it's a pain in the posterior. IMHO ubuntu and it's ilk are the way to go and i intend to do just that one way or the other.
