This happens on boot on Fedora 15. Plymouth Boot Screen just stays there and I can't login. Searching around suggested kmod-nvidia to cause this (one moth ago ofc), but here I am with Intel Graphics and the default drivers.

After applying upgrades to debian 8.2 on a lenovo yoga3 notebook and a reboot I am not able to login into my GNOME desktop. The login screen stays black. If I press the power button to suspend I can see the login screen with default background for ~1 second before it turns black again. What can I do to fix this issue? Is there a way to login via terminal and do a rollback? Can I use my home folder an personal settings if i reinstall debian and keep the /home partition?
View 14 Replies View RelatedWhen I change the boot up theme in plymouth from the default, Fedora will not give me a login screen, or leave the plymouth splash screen, I like the spinfinity theme, however when I set that I cannot get to the login screen unless I hit esc when it is booting and never let the splash screen come up. This happens with both gdm and kdm. Anyone else having this problem?
View 2 Replies View RelatedWell this problem has been here since Lucid. When I start up my computer and select Ubuntu, I get a blinking underscore for about most of the start up time for Ubuntu. Then It quickly shows the nice Ubuntu Loading Screen (Plymouth) for about two seconds, then it gets to the login screen. I am using the Open Source ATI drivers, I believe the open drivers are called "radeon".

Machine boots fine, but the screen is blank for most of the boot, and plymouth is up for about a half second before I get to the login screen.I've tried searching the threads, but for the life of me I can't find the solution and can't remember what I did to fix it on Lucid.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have tried booting from 2 different Ubuntu CD's (10-04-01 and 10-10) and a Fedora CD.All 3 CD's do the same thing, in Ubuntu I just see the first screen (Keyboard/Battery on the bottom with the guy next to it) and then the screen goes black but the lights, that indicate there's a computer connected and transmitting info onto the screen, are still on.
I know the CD's aren't the problem because they work on 2 other computers I have.The CD drive isn't the problem because took it out of a working computer and that booted up fine with the CD's.I've restored BIOS to default settings.I've tried booting with 1 stick of ram at a time but still doesn't boot.I've left the computer on for 3 hours but nothing appeared on the screen and the lights never turned off. It was just a black screen, nothing on it, not even a blinking cursor.I know it's capable of booting up CD's because the Windows XP setup disc boots.
Had Ubuntu installed, it worked fine but I had to format for a new partition (out of space) I program in Windows, I would consider myself a Windows geek, and would like to try out Linux. After I boot into setup, it stays at a black screen. It did that when I was installed Ubuntu, the first time. I don't know how exactly it ended up working, after a lot of different things I was able to get it to boot.

I am running Lucid 64bit and have upgraded through the cycle from Karmic. I am using nvidia proprietary drivers. All the time that the Plymouth boot screen has been available it has been in low resolution. As we are now at beta 2 I am torn between searching a fix or waiting for the final release. So, from what I have read I need the 'nouveau' driver to fix this issue.
1. How do I install this in place of my existing nvidia proprietary driver?
2. I am a little bit confused by the hardware drivers selection panel telling me that I have an nvidia driver installed but that it is not in use-I read that this might be a bug?

After upgrade, boot only gave me a blank, purple screen, so I used his revert script then tried this : [URL]
But I'm only getting a black screen. Removing vga=795 option only make it stay purple. It might be because of the multiples workarounds I tried back in 10.10, but I don't know how to clean that up. I have an ATI HD Radeon Pro 2400 card with free drivers (but I was using the proprietary ones during upgrade).
Is there a way to install Plymouth Boot screen for centOS 5.5 ?I am unable to get any RPM for CentOS.Fedora has it but CentOS doesnt.I tried compiling it from source but I get an error that libpng 1.2.16 >= is required for this. Unfortunately even that is not there in CentOS.Only 1.2.10 is there for CentOS.

Everything worked fine, except at boot, the splash screen doesn't fill the entire monitor. I set it to the native resolution of my monitor, 1920x1080. Its just not stretched fullscreen.
really wish to customize my GDM for ubuntu 11.4 but failed to do so.....therefore i decided to use alt. such as SLiM.....I could install it properly in virtualbox but when i went to do it on my real ubuntu 11.4 ......the screen stops at plymouth theme or goes blank after loading plymouth theme......then i read further more blogs and made changes and now even if i configure SLim the GDM starts no matter what i do .........

I downloaded Fedora-14-i686-Live-Desktop.iso and used the Fedora liveusb-creator to put this on a 2GB USB stick. Everything seemed to have gone well and it said complete; however, when I try to boot from the USB stick, I get a black screen with a linux copyright notice at the top and it just stays at that screen forever. I tried this on two computers with the same results.
I'd previously tried with Ubuntu and had a similar issue, it would go to a purple (if I remember correctly) Ubuntu screen and it sat that forever.
I have windows installed through virtual Box now but i have some questions. When i make it full screen it goes full screen but Windows stays in the middle of the screen small and doesn't adjust to the full screen. Can you make windows completely take up the full screen Can i access folders on my ubuntu drive ? i have a file in downloads i want in windows but don't want to reinstall it

i had also added vbox users(i ticked vboxusers) under yast-security and users-user and group management-edit-details to make virtual box work.

I am using Ubuntu 10.04.1 and I run it 24 hours a day. Recently one morning I went to my laptop and opened the screen but the login screen wouldn't appear. Anytime the cursor appeared, HDD activity would go to 100%. I'm assuming this because the HDD light on my laptop was permanently on. So I made the dumb decision of just holding the power button down and turning it off. When I turned it back on, I noticed it came to a command prompt type screen listing "initramfs" at the bottom apparently wanting me to input a command. I did a lot of research and couldn't find much of anything that would help me. I read about GRUB, superblocks, fsck, e2fsck, etc.. . I tried all of those and nothing has worked so far. Any ideas? I did notice one thing. When I went into the actual install with the livecd, it told me the drive was /dev/sda5, but in Disk Utility on the livecd, it told me it was /dev/sda1

To be abundantly clear, I mean the bar along the top with the power button and user name on it. It stays on the screen, but I can't interact with it; the mouse clicks "under" it as if it weren't there. I'm sure Compiz has something to do with it as it's as new problem, but I don't know how to fix it. I tried disabling Window Decoration, I tried setting it so it only applied to windows with !(state=fullscreen), but nothing seems to work.As a related problem, the menu button in Firefox (the one to the left of the tabs) just appeared out of nowhere. How do I make that go away? And the menu bar as a part of the taskbar doesn't work any more. Where's the option for that?

It's intermittent, so can not tell you what triggers it, but when it kicks off a commandline screen comes up, with a command pointing to some battery monitor software, and I have a desktop, so no battery and wonder why my machine has a battery monitoring software, when none should be installed. Anyway the screen stays up momentarily, then the system tries to go into something like a screen saver and I get all garbage on the screen, loose all ability to control and have to perform a hard reboot to recover from this.

When I open the laptop lid all lights indicated that it coming out of suspend but the monitor stays black. It is worse since I install the ati drivers for the card instead of the xorg. It did it with both but worse with nonfree drivers. I can get it to come out by ctrl alt f2 and the ctrl alt f7. However yesterday that did not work but that was the first time. View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm using Debian Sid xfce on my lenovo laptop. When i try to shutdown, the screen always stays on (the fans turn off). It says "reached target shutdown", then this happens: [URL] .... and then it hangs. I have to press the power button to shut it down. (I have the same problem with reboot). I had the same issues with Jessie.
Things i tried so far and didn't work:

I edited /etc/default/grub and added the following options at "GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT":

none of them worked..
I have no energy or wake up options at my BIOS.
I found out that i can normally reboot with the Alt + sysrq + REISUB key combination.
I just installed Mythbuntu 10.04 and have my Sony LCD TV connected via a DVI to HDMI cable. The issue I am encountering is that everything works fine until I turn off the TV and turn it back on later, because the screen stays blank and from what the TV tells me there is no signal. I have no idea what can cause this. I checked the TV settings in terms of power saving and turned it all off. I turned off the screen saver in Ubuntu, but still the same issue. I just installed Kubuntu 10.04 on my Desktop computer. Prior to KDM loading, all I get is a blank, black screen with no Plymouth splash screen. I'm confident that this issue is not related to KDE but would apply to all Ubuntu variants. Here are my computer specs:
Kubuntu 10.04 x64 running with all updates
Dell Studio Desktop
Intel Quad-Core Processor 2.66Ghz
8GB ram
Intel Integrated Graphics
I should note that I have full desktop effects running smoothly under KDE with compositing enabled, so my integrated graphics is not necessarily the problem unless Plymouth is not loading the graphics drivers successfully.
