Debian Configuration :: When Shutdown Screen Always Stays On And Then It Hangs

I'm using Debian Sid xfce on my lenovo laptop. When i try to shutdown, the screen always stays on (the fans turn off). It says "reached target shutdown", then this happens: [URL] .... and then it hangs. I have to press the power button to shut it down. (I have the same problem with reboot). I had the same issues with Jessie.
Things i tried so far and didn't work:

systemctl poweroff
init 0
I edited /etc/default/grub and added the following options at "GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT":
acpi=force, acpi=off*, acpi=noirq
*acpi=off: shutdown (not reboot) worked a few times but i didn't have wifi and power manager didn't seem to work
none of them worked..
I have no energy or wake up options at my BIOS.
I found out that i can normally reboot with the Alt + sysrq + REISUB key combination.

Creating a separate /tmp partition manually during install prevents a clean shutdown.
Setup: Debian 8 minimal server configuration (SSH only) using net install as virtual machine on Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V (Gen 2).
1024 MB RAM, 20 GB VHDX, and 1 Processor, EFI boot
Packages installed: openssh-server, sudo, unattended-upgrades, bsd-mailx postfix
Application: IPv6 gateway using 6in4 tunnel
Symptoms: When shutting down the operating system (poweroff or reboot), the message
A start job is running for Unattended-Upgrades ( xx seconds / no limit ).is displayed on the console and will persist for several minutes before eventually timing out and shutting down.I've tried several different configurations. Any configuration that creates /tmp automatically (whole disk with single partition, or disk with separate /home, /var, and /tmp partitions) works fine and shuts down promptly. When I partition the disk manually (512 MB EFI Boot, 17 GB /, 3 GB /var, 512 MB /tmp, and 512+ swap) the problem occurs. I've narrowed it down to just the /tmp partition by testing and comparing various configurations (including/excluding partitions, placing partitions on a separate disk, changing the partition sizes, matching against automatic configurations, etc.).
I have also compared the /etc/fstab and /etc/default/tmpfs configuration file between working and non-working systems and cannot see any meaningful difference.

Since moving my debian server over to a Gigabyte H97N-WIFI motherboard the console dims on booting and generally stays dark. Strangely the screen the brightens up if I go to an emergency shell, but if the boot runs successfully I don't see the resulting login prompts. Also, during the boot process the messages to the console are too dark to see.
I've tried the i915.invert_brightness=1 fix mentioned here [URL].... but that seems to have no effect. I'm assuming that this has something to do with moving to intel graphics as my previous hardware had a radeon graphics card and didn't display this problem.

I just recently updated wicd from backports on lenny to version 1.6.2.2. And with my static ip configuration in wicd, when i click on the Scripts button in the network profile properties window the gui part of wicd totally freezes. This literally means that the tray icon becomes unusable although the connection stays alive. I would like to setup some scripts to automatically activate my vpn connection through pptp, which already works manually, but i would like to do it somehow through wicd. The wicd wiki talks about it vaguely so i figured i try it. I also tried to post this question on the wicd forum but registering is disabled for the time beeing.. though luck i guess.
So anyway does anyone else has these sympthoms with the backports version of wicd ?

I recently got an upgrade from my mobile broadband provider (3 UK) that included a ZTE MF112 modem. I found that (unlike the Hauwei modem that preceeded it) this item did not work "out of the box". After a bit of googling around I decided that a good starting place would be to upgrade the OS on my laptop. I've been meaning to do this for a while anyway so have just installed Squeeze (the i386 version, on Thinkpad x61). I think it's now pretty close to working "out of the box" but annoyingly isn't quite there. I thought of getting a ZTE modem to work say that usb-modeswitch needs to be used to make it not load as a cdrom. However, it appears to load correctly without any alteration (in fact, adding the /etc/udev/rules.d/zte_eject.rules file I have found described appear to do the reverse and make it load as a storage device - at least an icon for it appears on screen).
lsusb correctly lists it as device 19d2:0031 and identifies the device as a ZTE MF636 (though it says MF112 on the package). Looking at the Network Connections tool there is an entry for 3 mobile that is, afaik, correctly configured. If I click on the network applet on the toolbar, there is a bit of contradiction: towards the top of the drop-down list it reports mobile broadband as not enabled, but further down under the "available" list is an entry for "3 internet". I haven't paid too much attention to the not enabled entry because it also reports the wired network as not managed, so maybe this is just a quirk of network manager. - I know you have to comment out eth0 entries in /etc/network/interfaces to have network manager deal with the interface in Squeeze. There are no entries for the mobile connection in the interfaces file.
If I click on the 3 internet entry the applet goes momentarily into trying to connect mode (the circling dot) but very quickly pops up a Disconnected box, and that's all that ever happens. I note that the light on the modem stays permanently red. On the old Huwei it started green but went blue, and I think I read something about it also changing colour on the ZTE. On the other hand, the Hauwei didn't show up on the network manager list until the light had turned blue, whereas this does seem to be there. It looks as if the problem is something fairly trivial since the device appears to be both recognised and (almost!) correctly configured. How to sort this.

I like to suspend my laptop when I close the lid. I have squeeze installed. When I open the laptop lid all lights indicated that it coming out of suspend but the monitor stays black. It is worse since I install the ati drivers for the card instead of the xorg. It did it with both but worse with nonfree drivers. I can get it to come out by ctrl alt f2 and the ctrl alt f7. However yesterday that did not work but that was the first time. My laptop is an acer 5251-1513 amd processor v120, and hd 4250 radeon

After applying upgrades to debian 8.2 on a lenovo yoga3 notebook and a reboot I am not able to login into my GNOME desktop. The login screen stays black. If I press the power button to suspend I can see the login screen with default background for ~1 second before it turns black again. What can I do to fix this issue? Is there a way to login via terminal and do a rollback? Can I use my home folder an personal settings if i reinstall debian and keep the /home partition?

Working with 8.2 DVD installation for about 5 days, Debian newbie. As subject says, screen goes dark and hangs indefinitely.

I'm running Debian Squeeze on a Dell Studio 1558 laptop, and I have my laptop set to suspend when my lid is closed. Resuming from suspend seems to work but the screen remains blank, forcing me to hard reboot every time. Upon reading this thread:

I have a Logitech G15 v2 keyboard and whenever i shutdown my computer the num lock light stays on. I have to pull off the keyboard's USB cable off after i turn off my computer. After that, it stays unlit.Already tried looking around in BIOS if there were any setting for it, found nothing. Happens on my other keyboard too. Also, all fans and everything in my computer but that num lock light turns off.

I downloaded Fedora-14-i686-Live-Desktop.iso and used the Fedora liveusb-creator to put this on a 2GB USB stick. Everything seemed to have gone well and it said complete; however, when I try to boot from the USB stick, I get a black screen with a linux copyright notice at the top and it just stays at that screen forever. I tried this on two computers with the same results.
I'd previously tried with Ubuntu and had a similar issue, it would go to a purple (if I remember correctly) Ubuntu screen and it sat that forever.

I have windows installed through virtual Box now but i have some questions. When i make it full screen it goes full screen but Windows stays in the middle of the screen small and doesn't adjust to the full screen. Can you make windows completely take up the full screen Can i access folders on my ubuntu drive ? i have a file in downloads i want in windows but don't want to reinstall it

Without being paranoiac, it seems possible to keep the memory content for some minutes after shutdown and dump it accessing directly to the hardware.So how to fill the memory with constant or random pattern before halting? Is there a kernel option that I can give at boot time , or an other tool I can install from Debian/Ubuntu to achieve this ?

I have looked all over the place but I can't find if this is possible. I am running Debian 6 as a media server (SMB) and it is tied to a UPS, I used gnome power management to set up a low battery shutdown but this UPS also is powering another embedded computer. So, I was wondering if it was possible to have a script run (to log in and shut down the embedded system) before gnome power management shuts down the Debian server. I know I could probably get it to run on every shutdown, but I am looking for low power only.

I've been using linux for a few months. Recently I have installed debian jessie and I'm learning how to secure my laptop. I have installed

to shutdown few services that I believe I don't need at boot which I found very useful. Among others I have deselected avahi-daemon, cups, cups-browsed, etc. The problem is that, after rebooting, when running:

I still find 'avahi-daemon: r' and 'cupsd' running. I have tried

I'm running a Debian on a laptop (actually a netbook: Asus EEE 1001PX) as a cheap homeserver. However I'd like it to automatically "shutdown -h NOW" when I remove the AC plug (switch it off at the wall). Otherwise I have to ssh to it and call it myself, and that just sucks Can I somehow detect the removal of AC power and upon that run a script ?

on my netbook I've tried to make possible for my user to shutdown without needing a password. battery could run low when I'm not in front of it. Editing sudoers has allowed my user to shutdown the system, but Gnome still prompts me for the root password whenever root is logged in too. That's usually the case, because to avoid entering the root password multiple times whenever I need elevated privileges and not wanting to cache the root password, I keep a Root Terminal always open.

I'm using Debian 8.2 from a very recent download of the latest NetInst (less than 2 weeks). I'm sort of new to Linux - More accurately, I've used Unix and Linux extensively in the past, so most of my knowledge is dated. In particular, the whole systemd / systemctl paradigm is completely new to me.
Problem: I've added an entry to /etc/fstab to mount a NAS drive as CIFS. When I do a system shutdown or reboot, the system hangs for 90 seconds trying to unmount the NAS. If I manually umount the NAS prior to shutdown / reboot everything works fine.
I've done a fair amount of investigation and web searches, but haven't found a fix yet. Apparently several people were encountering similar problems about a year back, and it seems pretty clear that the root cause what ordering of steps in the shutdown process, e.g., WLAN being turned off before unmounting filesystems. This seems to have been resolved for most users (no one is discussing it any more), but I'm now running into the same issue. Ugh.
I tried to add a shell script to /etc/rc0.d to umount the NAS first in the shutdown process. This had no effect. I assume this is because the new systemd / systemctl paradigm supplants the old /etc/rc model of runlevel control, though it is rather baffling (to me, at least) as to why /etc/rc* still exists if the system is no longer using it...?
Here's some things I'd like to try, but how to proceed:
1. In the new systemd / systemctl paradigm, how do I examine and change the ordering of steps in the shutdown process? I've seen a lot of documentation on systemd, but nothing tells me how to do what I used to be able to do with /etc/rc with a simple rename of a symlink. If I knew how to look at the order of shutdown and change that ordering, I'm fairly certain I could identify and resolve this issue.
2. Is there some other way to mount my CIFS NAS other than editing /etc/fstab? Is it possible that my manual edit to /etc/fstab is the cause of this issue? My research into systemd indicates that it IS supposed to be compatible with /etc/fstab. I have not yet found documentation describing how to mount a filesystem at boot WITHOUT editing /etc/fstab ...

I was trying to sync my Tungsten E with Debian Squeeze and it would just hang as if there was no connection. Trying pilot-link -l resulted in a message saying that it was looking for a new usb connection (or something to that effect) and would never connect. jpilot is set to use "usb:".
I moved to my laptop, which has Ubuntu Lucid, installed jpilot and it synced just fine using "usb:". What is "usb:"? How do I troubleshoot it? It seems to me that is the problem with my debian install.

I am using Debian sid 4.1.3-1 and when i shutdown the system it takes 3 - 5 minutes before actually shutdown, there is only a black screen until the hdd led start flashing and after that the system finally shutdown. The weird part is that sometimes it happen in less than 30 seconds , how can i figure out where the problem is ?

I use a static compiled kernel and a fully encrypted disk apart from a boot partition. I have recompiled and installed kernels many times. When I tried with the latest kernel from Testing, 4.2.6, the system will not boot. Not only that but the previous kernel now does not boot. However, a stock modular kernel does boot. The static kernel hangs at:

As above, my wheezy 32bit hangs at boot. the last few lines displayed are

Configuring network interfaces...

I removed the files from /etc/network/interfaces.d/ just in case. i still can't boot up.

I have a laptop Acer Aspire 4551-2194. I've installed Debian Squeeze with XFCE and it works great. I have only one problem. I can go through hibernation / suspend, but when I push the power button, the computer hangs. It doesn't come back and I must reboot it.

When I run a program in fullscreen (a ..... video, for example), the taskbar stays on screen. To be abundantly clear, I mean the bar along the top with the power button and user name on it. It stays on the screen, but I can't interact with it; the mouse clicks "under" it as if it weren't there. I'm sure Compiz has something to do with it as it's as new problem, but I don't know how to fix it. I tried disabling Window Decoration, I tried setting it so it only applied to windows with !(state=fullscreen), but nothing seems to work.As a related problem, the menu button in Firefox (the one to the left of the tabs) just appeared out of nowhere. How do I make that go away? And the menu bar as a part of the taskbar doesn't work any more. Where's the option for that?
