Ubuntu :: Give A User Sudo Privilege From Command Line?

Mar 14, 2011

I adjusted some settings in the desktop settings folder in KDE. I had only one user account on the machine. Next time I rebooted I could not log into KDE (it kept bombing out). I had to log into the console. Finally I managed to create a new account with useradd but this user cannot sudo

My problem is that my home directory is encrypted, so I need a new user with sudo privileges to delete all the kde files and folders in my original users home directory so that I can start with a new KDE setup (which wont be a bad thing since I tinkered a lot).

How can I add sudo privileges to the new account (I presume I can do it by logging in with my sudo account in a terminal login?

Ubuntu :: Screen So Dim - Almost Unreadable On Boot Up / Proceed It?

Jun 18, 2010

I Installed Ubuntu x64 10.04 on an Hp HDX 16 with Nvidia 9600m video card. I am having an issue that the screen is very dim and it gives one a headache to read it for long periods of time, especially in a bright room. I can adjust the contrast and brightness from the nvidia control panel but I can never get it just right it will either look washed out or just muddy. Everything was fine in Windows 7 a day or so ago. Is this a backlight issue?

Any suggestions on how to proceed?

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Unable To Add An Entry For Phone Things Can Proceed

Sep 24, 2010

I'm at step 2c in the sticky "My wireless doesn't work - A primer." and yes, my HTC G1 phone isn't listed and your sticky says nothing more can be done. So, my question is how lsusb generates that list... Is it querying the device, extracts the information and prints that information to the display or is SuSE comparing whatever info is returned, matches that information (eg VendorID/ProductID) to a database of supported devices, then prints the result to display?

This is important, because if the former is true, then it looks like I may be SOL getting this to work in SuSE. If the latter is how things really work, then I assume that if I'm able to add an entry for my phone things can proceed.

General :: Make Shell Script Wait For A Particular Key Pressed In Order To Proceed?

Jan 30, 2010

i've been searching all over the internet for a way to let the user press a particular key let's say 'y' without the user having to press [Enter] as confirmationfor yes, this would then run another function.

Quote:

Book Inventory Summary Report:-

Title, Author, Price
______________________________
StarWars EP1, G.Lucas, $49.59
Harry Potter, Rowling, $45.98
The Matrix, Mr. Smith, $53.98

Press 'y' to make a copy of this result into a file or 'n' to return to the main menu.. I understand the "press any key to continue" would go something like

Code:

read -sn 1 -p "Press any key to continue.." But i try many different ways of getting the "press a particular key" function, and none of them works.
