OpenSUSE Wireless :: Unable To Add An Entry For Phone Things Can Proceed
Sep 24, 2010
I'm at step 2c in the sticky "My wireless doesn't work - A primer." and yes, my HTC G1 phone isn't listed and your sticky says nothing more can be done. So, my question is how lsusb generates that list... Is it querying the device, extracts the information and prints that information to the display or is SuSE comparing whatever info is returned, matches that information (eg VendorID/ProductID) to a database of supported devices, then prints the result to display?
This is important, because if the former is true, then it looks like I may be SOL getting this to work in SuSE. If the latter is how things really work, then I assume that if I'm able to add an entry for my phone things can proceed.

Running Opensuse 11.1 on an HP laptop. When I resume from hibernation or standby, I usually have to wait for about a minute for the wireless card to find my router. Is there any way to speed up this time to connect process ?
Interestingly when I boot from cold, the wireless connection is most times ready to go as soon as the boot has finished. So just wondering how I can make things quicker for resume from standby or hibernation

I have a mobile phone (T68i) attached to my server and everything works fine. But sometimes the phone craches and needs to be rebooted wich is quite annoying. So I want to use a newer phone that is not 10+ years old :-)But when using a K610i or C702 the phone does not appear on /dev/ttyUSB0 as expected. When inserting the usb cable a dmesg gives this:
Code:
[5924924.451033] usb 1-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 19
[5924924.576728] usb 1-3: New USB device found, idVendor=0fce, idProduct=d0d9

I'm working through some problems in a beginners programming book. The author mentions a formula for calculating the number of ways of picking out n things from a collection of m of them:
Code:
/ m m!
| | = -----------
n / n! (m-n)!
But he does not give a name for the formula. Does anyone happen to know what it is called? I need to do some related research.

I am using OpenSuse 11.4(32 bit) on my Lenovo B460 laptop, and as the title points, am unable to use wireless on it. The 'enable wireless' option from icon menu is not greyed out, however clicking it does nothing, it remains disabled.
lspci -vv shows:
"04:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4313 802.11b/g/n Wireless LAN Controller (rev 01)
Subsystem: Broadcom Corporation Device 0510

[code]....
so it seems that opensuse knows my hardware but networkmanager doesn't! I have all broadcom packages installed as well as kernel-firmware installed.

Ive noticed this in 2 places specifically. The first is when I try to open the only "tarball" program Ive ever tried to install, Celtx. I unpacked the program into my bin folder, and when clicking (or double clicking) on either the executable file or the shell script nothing happens. If I double click on shell script, and then on the executable, I get an error saying "celtx is already running but not responding. To open a new window you must first close the existing celtx process, or restart your computer".
The second time is when I get a notice on my screen about new security updates available.I click on it, and it opens up the "software update" window with the updates it wants to nstall already checked. I click "install updates" and nothing happens. If I click the help button, it gives me an error "failed to execute child process "gnome-help"". Im guessing this one is because Im not using gnome, but XFCE. If I open up online update using yast, I can update from there and install these files fine.So basically the second problem is not that big of a deal, since Im able to install the files from a different area. Its just annoying and I dont know if it means there is a deeper bug in my system. The first problem makes me unable to run a program I really wan to run, so thats the one I really need the most help with.

Having just upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 from 10.10 I noticed that my Grub menu had not upgraded. The upgrade was not as straight forward as it should have been as the PC hung at the end of the installation resulting in a reboot and running dpkg in safe mode to get it all back up and running.
To fix the incorrect grub menu.lst file which was not updating, I renamed the original file and then ran sudo update-grub. It generated a new and correct file. However, my Windows partition was not listed as a Grub menu option.

I'd like to put a few MP3s on it but I'm not able to connect to the phone via USB on my xubuntu box to drop files onto it. It works on my company computer (Windows XP) so I know it's not a problem with the phone.
I'm still somewhat of an ubuntu noob so it may be a quick fix that I have overlooked/don't understand yet. Once I plug the phone in to the box, I tell Android to enable USB storage and mount the drive. Here's the error I get afterwards:
Quote:
Failed to mount "3G Removable Volume".
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdc1,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so.
Here's the settings set in Storage Device Manager:
Mountpoint: /media/sdc1
Type: vfat
Options: defaults,users,utf8,mark=007,uid=1000,user
Is there a config change I need to make in Storage Device Manager to make this work, or am I missing something else?

I access the Internet exclusively through my Verizon-branded HTC Incredible cell phone using my Dell Latitude D800 notebook. I have a Samsung 2152-w wireless laser printer that works well through USB and works well through a wireless router.
My question is: since I use my cell as a wireless hot-spot for my notebook, is there any way to use the wireless capability of my printer? I don't know of any way to configure this, and Google hasn't been of help yet. If possible, I would like to avoid using the wireless router; I used it when I had a wired network for my old desktop.

It's installed as a mobile broadband connection. Only works if my phone is plugged in during boot, otherwise plugging in my phone does nothing. For example, I booted my netbook earlier today but my phone wasn't plugged in. Tethering did not work, it just acts as if it isn't present. I rebooted (with my phone still attached) and now tethering magically works.

Firefox informed me that I should get the latest version. I naively listened to that voice, and was taken to a download screen. I downloaded it. I was hoping for a self-installer, because I'm used to windows. It opened in KPackageKit, or something named similar. I extracted it to my documents, because frankly, I have no idea where to extract it to. Anywhere's I've looked says that most software comes as a package, which you can search for and install in YaST. I searched for "firefox", and nothing new came up. how to extract things to the right place/install them correctly with YaST?

At least with 11.4 on a 12-core AMD, the NOUVEAU driver is a crock for this. Not merely does character reflection and many other things take ages, it dies horribly far too often. NVIDIA's driver seems better. This is purely for information, as my problem is solved for now.

I have a Tecra A7 with Intel 945GM. /boot is in a Ext4 partition and the rest is LVM2 splitten in 3 (/: Ext4, /home: Ext4 and swap). There is also a windows partition in the disk: I have installed openSUSE 11.4 (clean but keeping my /home directory untouched why is there since my openSUSE 11.2 installation). I have the following questions:
1.- During the installation I tried to shrink the windows partition and grow the LVM2 . The installer said that the partition was in use and could not be modified. I thought that during the installation the parititions where not mounted. Why is this? How can I grow now the physical volume (not the logical ones)?
2.- Solving this problem I realized that there a lot of duplicate files in .kde and .kde4. Can some of these be deleted?
3.- At boot, the computer frequently freezes after GRUB. Is right after selecting an option in GRUB, so it might be at mounting. In the failsafe configuration, it happens less frequently. How can I diagnose what is really going on?
4.- Every time I navigate into a webpage which contains a login form, Chrome ask me to unlock kdewallet. It is extremely annoying because this happens with all webpages, not just the ones in which I am registered.

I didnt quite understand the guide on S2RAM. For example, when doing this:
Code:
linux-a7dy:/home/gabriel # s2ram -f -a3
switching from vt7 to vt1... succeeded
fbcon fb0 state 1
s2ram_do: No such device
fbcon fb0 state 0
switching back to vt7... succeeded
Does that mean it worked? I ran it both from the minimun enviroment and from KDE and got the same things on text, but no actual suspend of the system!

I was using openSUSE, then went to Mint. Before I had to tinker with all sorts of settings, and things to get wireless internet to work. Ubuntu just detected what drivers I needed & its simply got my wireless to work all on its' own.
Is 11.3 similar? I want to move back to openSUSE, but I don't want to tinker with this. I want to use my time on the computer for more productive things.

I am having trouble getting NetworkManager to detect my Huawei-Vodafone dongle and I can't figure out why. I went and checked on NetworkManagers website and I should be good to gobut no such luck. look at the following:
manpep@manpep-desktop ~ $
manpep@manpep-desktop ~ $ dmesg | grep -e "modem" -e "tty"
[ 0.000000] console [tty0] enabled
[ 47.951906] USB Serial support registered for GSM modem (1-port)
[ 47.951958] option 3-2:1.0: GSM modem (1-port) converter detected
[ 47.952990] usb 3-2: GSM modem (1-port) converter now attached to ttyUSB0
[Code]....
Although "lsusb" see it (as usually) as Huawei model E620, in fact it's a much more recent one. It's the K3520, from last year.

just finished installing Ubuntu to my dell mini 10v netbook. I really like it so far but I have hit a problem that may be a potential deal breaker. I have a CDMA HTC Hero phone that I have rooted. I installed the "wireless tether for root users" app on my phone and use it ALL the time to go online on my netbook through my phone on windows. However Ubuntu 9.10 does not seem to connect to my phone running this app. It sees the SSID, and i tell it to connect, and then I just get that circle thing for a couple of minutes then it gives up and connects to my main router if its in range.

I'm using OpenSUSE 11.3 64-bit on a Lenovo G560. I'm able to establish both wired and unwired connections without problems. Now I'm in a situation where I'd like to share my laptop's internet connection with other devices. My thought was to establish an ad-hoc network that another computer could connect to wirelessly in order to get into the Internet, because I've only got one ethernet jack.
First thought was to use Network Manager, since that manages all my connections. A left click on the Network Manager icon brings up a menu in which "Wireless 802.11, Create network connection..." is an option. If I click on that I see a list of all the networks available in the area, as well as all the networks I've set up in the past. Below that are two options: "New Ad-Hoc Network" and "Connect To Other Network With Wireless 802.11..."
"New Ad-Hoc Network" seems like the right option, but when I double click on it the window closes and nothing happens. No error message, nothing. Network Manager continues to run and my connection is unchanged. If I just left click on it and then click "Connect" at the bottom of the window, the same thing happens.

Picture 2. Grey-out options in Bluetooth 'receive file' dialog. What to install into system to resolve that issue? Or, is there another solution?

I am trying to connect to wireless broadband using SuSE 11.2 and a Huawei E160E USB modem, through Internode Australia.
Networkmanager does not seem to recognise the modem so I am trying other means. I believe I have got wvdial to connect (it reports a correct IP address, the light on the stick goes solid blue and I can ping external IP addresses). However it can't find a DNS nameserver and I can't work out how to provide one to wvdial, and therefore can't do anything through the connection (I would rather not revert to ifup because this laptop travels between WLANs). I followed swerdna's comprehensive instructions on setting up a wireless broadband modem in YAST, but I got lost on the very last instruction: KMenu --> KInternet. I can't find this on my application launcher.
