How can I install Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.04 to a USB drive so I can run it on any computer. I want the full version of it on my USB drive not just the live CD version.I want to use Ubuntu on my school computers.Basically, I wanted a 100% portable UNE that saves all settings, data, programs, etc and is still as fast as possible for a USB.

I have istalled Linux mandrake once ages ago and red hat once too. The only other machine I have is a bigger netbook on vista, if I can get Linux working on the smaller then use it on my bigger machine too. Is it possible to use an USB HSDPA modem using mint on this netbook?

Preferably in a separate partition allowing boot to either Linux or Win 7.This needs to be a high confidence installation, because if the existing Win 7 installation is screwed up there appears to be no way to recover.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have already installed Ubuntu from an USB drive, however everytime I have to install it on a desktop/laptop or netbook, I have to "burn" the USB again, so I wonder if there is any way to have both (Ubuntu desktop and Netbook Edition) on the same USB drive and choose wich one you want to install at the boot moment.
I usually have the ISO images and copy the files to the USB with the "Startup Disk Creator" utility built in Ubuntu or eventually with Universal USB Installer or UNetbootin...
i have a hp dv6707us with windows vista and i'm trying to install fedora 10 x86_64 from a live cd, when i try to use the live cd it shows a screen saying that it will boot after 10 seconds, then appears a black screen with a loading bar with fedora 10 word next to it when the bar becomes completely white along with the word fedora 10 it doesnt happens anything and any indication of what could be wrong then i type enter and it reads the live cd for a while then a black screen with a blinking cursor appears and yet nothing happens i wait until i get bored and cancel the all the process.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI tried to boot from the 9.04 Live CD on my Titanium Powerbook 550mhz. It just comes up as various grayscale lines. Very strange because i know of no problem with its ATI video. OTOH, I was able to boot the same cdrw and install onto my G4imac with no problems, even though it has nvidia graphics card.
Any ideas how to proceed in getting it to work on the TiBook?
I'm at step 2c in the sticky "My wireless doesn't work - A primer." and yes, my HTC G1 phone isn't listed and your sticky says nothing more can be done. So, my question is how lsusb generates that list... Is it querying the device, extracts the information and prints that information to the display or is SuSE comparing whatever info is returned, matches that information (eg VendorID/ProductID) to a database of supported devices, then prints the result to display?
This is important, because if the former is true, then it looks like I may be SOL getting this to work in SuSE. If the latter is how things really work, then I assume that if I'm able to add an entry for my phone things can proceed.
No matter which ubuntu version at 95% through the install it will complain that grub failed to install.
I'm installing this on an HP XW6600 with hardware raid striped.
I can use the supergrub rescue CD to boot to ubutu after, but whatever I do doesn't seem to get grub installed.
Any ideas on how to proceed? I'm guessing I need to install grub from scratch.
How can I install the video card of this netbook with widescreen resolution?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Samsung NC-10, installed Win 7 on it and after about 3 months realised that the Intel Atom processor couldn't cope very well. I defected to linux but I can't get the damn thing to boot. I downloaded the iso of openSUSE 11.3 and opened it with Daemon Tools Lite. In my first attempt, I copied and pasted the image using windows explorer onto an 8GB flash drive. I got a "Disk Error" message. (I did change the boot order so that the USB HDD had priority). I got my dad in to help and he formatted the drive to FAT32 and used xcopy in CMD to put the iso image onto the disk. Then I got the "Remove disks or other media. Press any key to restart" message. I'm annoyed now because I have spent my evenings doing this for the best part of 4 days.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI am looking into buying a cheap netbook and saw the Datawind Ubi-Surfer (e.g., Datawind Ubi-Surfer Netbook | [URL]). It comes with a pre-installed Windows CE which I will be keen to erase as soon as possible.
The spec is low, as can be expected: 128Mb ram (1GB flash), no optical drive (which poses the question of how to install openSUSE), but 3xUSB and ethernet are included.
I do not intend to use it for any processing. It is to run java applications and play music from an external USB hard drive.
Does anyone know whether this little box can cope with openSUSE 11.2 (or 11.3)? and if so, how do I install it without an optical drive?

- when the usb stick is plugged in, bios should boot 11.3 from the stick
- when the stick is not plugged in, bios should boot from the internal hard disk
I am unsure how the boot options in yast have to be set to achieve that.I changed the order of the harddisks to /dev/sdb (=the usb stick) being the first.I selected /dev/sdb3 (The root partition of the to-be-installed 11.3) as user defined root partition.do I have to select "start from MBR" and/or "start from root partition"? is there more to do to make the usb stick bootable?

I've Google'd for hours and tried different things
but I can not make a bootable USB of OpenSUSE 11.2.
I am running Ubuntu 10.04 now on my main desktop
and Ubuntu 10.04 now on the NetBook,
but have access to a Windows XP computer too...
I have an Acer Aspire One Netbook. Everytime I try to "burn" the live 11.2 GNOME CD to an USB drive (1GB) it fails on boot. I've tried unetbootin, the application from pendrivelinux.com as well. When it boots, it usually can't find the image. So I have to type in the name of the image by hand then press enter. I actually type the below in:
boot: openSUSE_Linux_(GNOME)
So it starts loading the image in text mode. I don't mind this, except it stops when it tries probing for the CD/DVD ROM.
rebootException failed to detect CD/DVD or USB drive
It just stops pass there. I've tried to add in the options acpi=off, but do I add it in before or after I enter in the image name? BTW, it doesn't boot in my laptop either.
I have noticed that the latest version of SUSE 11.3 is supposed to come with a Netbook addition. During install I did not see this feature. Instead I did the default install with full blown KDE.

I installed 11.04 on my netbook. Worked 100% no install problems. I have a usb flash drive with pictures on it that i would like to transfer them to the netbook using ubuntu. But ubuntu doesnt see the drive. If i plug the usb drive into a windows 7 machine. Up it comes pictures and all. I safely remove the flash drive from windows before pluging it into the Netbook with ubuntu! I know the usb port works. i unstalled 11.04 from a flash drive!

View 1 Replies View Relatedsee [URL] I am still somewhat happy with my netbook, although I have a Lenovo X61 from work (with XP) that I just love and since the netbook was purchase for travel, I don't use it as much as I use the x61. But I am preparing for a trip soon and have been trying to get the netbook to boot faster. Default Ubuntu 9.04 was taking about 1m 40s from off to a usable web site. Many tweaks later using the default hardware still, I get boots on average of 1m 10s or so.
I have tried fluxbox and xfce4, but shave maybe 10s off on a good boot, but am then in a much more limited DE, so I don't see the 10s being a good reason to limit myself. Using bootchart, it reports a boot time of ~30 so I really do believe it is gnome/X that is taking the longest time. Anyway...I finally broke down and got an ssd drive from Newegg [URL].
I dd'd the old hdd to the new ssd and guess what? Absolutely no change what so ever to the boot times. The ssd drive (although silent) has not gained me any speed at boot up. My average boot times are still 1m+. Also, I ran a battery test last night (wrote time out to a file every minute and ran totem none stop until the battery died) and I got 2 hours of life out of the 3 cell battery. This is about the same battery life I was getting with the traditional hdd.
In conclusion: As it stands now, the ssd drive has gained me nothing but silence, but at the cost of 100gigs (hdd = 160gig vs ssd = 60g)... no improvement to battery life no improvement to boot times The system does *seem* a little more responsive when the OS is finally up, but again, at what cost?

A friend loaded linux onto my eMachine netbook. Unfortunately the touch pad and WiFi refuse to work. He loaded it into a 40gb partition leaving 120gb unusable so it would probably make sense to start all over again. I only need basic txt software, pics and internet to work so I am not looking for state of the art. Just something that will work, is not too difficult to set up and preferably can be loaded from a pen drive (memory stick). Any suggestions? The "distro" as I understand it is Kubuntu. Not sure what version but I will have a look later.

I want to dual boot openSUSE 11.2 and Windows 7. I already have Windows 7 installed but I have encountered multiple issues in the past with trying to make dual boots. Usually when I install Linux, GRUB decides it wants to go into world domination mode, and "breaks" my Windows installation. I have reason to believe this is because the distros I use come with legacy GRUB, (v0.97) and for some odd reason it lacks commands such as "update-grub" etc. This means I cannot add Windows 7 to the boot menu without going into extreme complications, which have NEVER, I repeat NEVER succeeded. When I boot the Windows drive directly, I get some error about GRUB not finding the device, and it puts me into a grub rescue command line. Now I am no expert in this field at all, but wouldn't that mean that GRUB wrote itself to the MBR of...oh I don't know, ALL of my hard drives? I really want to install openSUSE 11.2, but from bad experience I am really put off as I know that it ships with legacy GRUB v0.97.I am also running Fedora 13 at the moment, I have quite an experimental dual boot running..been trying to get GRUB 2 for hours now, it is definitely there but no commands work, "upgrade-grub-from-legacy" and "update-grub" return with command not found. I've heard this is just a bug but can anybody confirm that there will definitely be a way for me to "fix" my windows installation after it gets "broken" by GRUB?Second idea, unplug my windows hard drive while openSUSE installs?

I have two different laptops that I would like to make bootable flash drive installs for, but would then like to have at least /home on a common removable storage (either a big flash drive or USB or ethernet hard drive) to share between the two laptops (I'll only be using one laptop as a Linux box at a time). One laptop (Dell Latitude D410) is only 32 bit capable (Pentium M - I think there's a 64 bit Core 2 CPU available for the socket 479, but I don't know if the BIOS / mobo will support it). If I'm going back and forth between 32 and 64 bits, can I share /home? What else can I share - /usr or anything else?
