ubuntu could delay kernel module installation until device is inserted?Take my usb ath9271 wifi adapter as an example: when kernel boot up, no ath modules are installed until usb wifi apdapter is inserted, ath related modules are insmod.Could anybody how to achieve this? udev or something else?

This command was successful, but I don't know if this is alright. I made the changes in lilo.conf, add initrd = initrd.gz. This is all on unencrypted /boot partition. The boot=/dev/sda1 I also set for the unencrypted boot partition. When I boot the system I get a kernel panic:

I am writing a kernel module which need to do something at some interval. Now this problem can be solved by using a user process, which will send signal to the kernel and the kernel would do accordingly. But it would be nice, i could do it within the kernel module itself. Is there any way to use SIGNALs inside the kernel module?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have just bought a DVB-T usb dongle to watch some TV. The software I'm using is vdr, which has to be started through the /etc/init.d/vdr service. I have created a udev script that executes the service on device insertion. It works nicely, however now when I boot up the computer it takes ages to get to desktop. I believe it is because of the WAIT_FOR part. But without this part, the service starts too soon because the usb dongle has been inserted but the firmware has not finished loading. Can someone point out an alternative way to do it? The script is here [URL].
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have two modules A and B in the kernel which i am trying to hack by introducing a variable in A which is of type 'extern' (and using EXPORT_SYMBOL) and then calling it in B. Now the problem is how to introduce that variable in module A. Currently i have made a global variable and it works fine but global variable in kernel is a bad bad thing.
I tried having an 'extern' function in A which have that variable and calling that function in module B, but then again how would module A use my variable unless the variable is available outside the scope of that function and that again means a global variable.
I recently started having this odd behaviour while using and loading cpufrequtils on boot, I don't know if it is happening to someone else.During boot I'm getting( when /etc/init.d/cpufrequtils invokes /etc/init.d/loadcpufreq to load the proper module):

I'm running MS "XP" on virtualbox and I'm sharing the /media folder from the host to the guest that's why I need an ON-DEMAND antivirus that scans the usb disk on insertion. (Light scan[neglecting archives and large files] is preferred to not overload the processor).

I am having some issues compiling kernel modules against the pre-built OpenSUSE kernel. Whenever I compile a module and try to load it, I get something like:

I want to remotely install OpenSUSE on one of my servers. I followed the instructions given at SDB:Remote installation - openSUSE, but it didn't work. (My server reverted back to the already installed system.) I think this has to do with a special kernel module (megaraid_sas) that is necessary for the raid controller. Without this module, the kernel cannot find any disk. Of course, the module is not included in the initrd provided by OpenSUSE. I know how to add files to the initrd, but I have no idea where I have to put the required kernel module and which config file inside the initrd must be modified to make the kernel load the module.

"Gave up waiting for boot device"

After using ubuntu I tried to reset my bios, because else it couldn't have found the disk with xp. And I didn't disconnect the disk with xp while resetting the bios. And now the system can't find the disk with xp any more when booting. Is there a way to finding the disk..? And I'm in doubt about IF I've resetted the bios at all. I miss a manual for PCCHIPS M851. May be it can take 20 minutes for the bios to be resetted? The shop where I bought the motherboard doesn't exist any more... and don't know the manufacturer. Could I damage the motherboard if I tried rebooting lots of times to get it work?
I have just compiled a new kernel. When I boot into this new kernel and do an lsmod it is only running two modules. The only thing I changed in the configuration file was to compile ext4 file system into the kernel. My computer is an HP Pavilion dv4. The two modules are lirc_ene0100 and lirc_dev. I am running Ubuntu 10.04. The new kernel is 2.6.32.15+drm33.5. The kernel seems to work fine but I need to know why and how it can only be running two modules.
