Ubuntu :: USB Drive Not Showing Up?
May 31, 2011
I can not see my usb stick on the desktop. I have set the options for storage media to automount, and when I run lsusb in as terminal, the usb stick is there. It just seems as if ubuntu is not realizing that the stick is a storage device... I can acess the device in windows XP, so i know that it isn't broken. This appeared when I upgraded from Xubuntu 10.10 to 11.04.

I use a flash drive for regular back up and other work and this has been very successful until two days ago. None of my USB flask drives are showing in the Places menu when I connect them. I have a dual boot with Mint and they work perfectly in Mint. A few days ago I was unsuccessfully trying to get my Broadcom wifi card to work and was following threads to install and uninstall various firmware programs. I am not sure if this caused the loss of the USB drive. When I go into System Profiler and Benchmark nothing is showing under USB devices.

Alright. So recently I've been having computer trouble and need to clean install my OS on my main Hard Drive. That normally wouldn't be a problem but there's some stuff on my main hard drive that I really don't want to part with, SOOO I figured I'd pick up a new HD and OS and move the files I want to keep before clean installing. I have my new HD installed and everything and it even shows up as a option in the boot menu. I'm currently running Ubuntu from a Flash Drive but only my old hard drive will show up. How can I access my other HD?

I have a Lucid Lynx server running with a 6 GB for /home and a data partition of 400 GB mounted inside home (/home/user/data). The data partition is shared through SAMBA for access by other windows machines on the network. However, the capacity of the samba share shows up only as 6 GB (or less) while the actual capacity is 400 GB. I am assuming that this because it is mounted within the home partition. I understand that 400 GB is still available even though the SAMBA drive shows only 6 GB (or less) capacity.
The problem is, I am trying to setup Windows 7 Backup and Restore on one of my laptop. The backup stops with an error that the network drive does not have enough disk space. I think that this is because the samba drive only shows up as 6 GB or less capacity even though it can store more.
How do I fix this problem? How can see the actual size of the SAMBA drive (in my case 400 GB) in stead of the remaining space in /home partition? I know I can reformat my drive and make my /home 400 GB. But I am not sure if this will fix the problem. However, I will prefer to this without formatting.

I just added a new drive, formatted it, and everything is ready. except that it does not show up under "places" in dolphin. Removable drives show up almost instantly, and same with all my other useful partitions*, but not this one. I can add a link to the folder it is mounted in, but that is just not the same...
is there something I need to do to fix this?

I had a 500gb hard drive that I wanted to use on my Ubuntu system as a media storage drive. The drive originally had two partitions on it,one was a Dell Recovery partition and the other was a Windows Vista partition. Using the Palimpsest Drive Utility that comes with Ubuntu, I deleted both partitions, created a Ext3 partition using 100% of the space and copied my data to the drive. After I finally got fstab to load the drive, I found another problem. First of all, when Grub loads, two options it offers are:
Windows Vista (loader) on sdc1
Windows Vista (loader) on sdc3
Aside from that, 100% of the drive is not being used by the Ext3 partition. It is showing 434.6gb available on the drive. Fdisk is not showing any other partitions on this drive, so A) why are the Windows loader options showing up under Grub and B) why do I not have 500gb available? Here is a copy of the output fdisk -l:
Code:
Disk /dev/sda: 80.0 GB, 80000000000 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9726 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes[code]....

I have a load of Maxell 2GB flash drives which I bought new.
It has a Public Partition and a Secure partition on the flash drive.
gparted and disk utility see it as 2 volumes. I need remove the 2MB secure partition to make the 2GB stick bootable. However since it's showing up as 2 volumes I can't see how to do it. Probably requires totally wiping the flash drive.
Can anyone recommend how I go about this?

I'm a bit new to LVM administration, and I have a question that the Clonezilla Live forum referred here. Below is the question.
2010-06-24 07:10:00 UTC
So, I was moving from a 250G disk to a 320G disk because I was running out of space on my laptop. My problem is that my new drive seems convinced that it is only 250G in size, and I'm wondering how to persuade it otherwise. I'm not sure if it matters, but I did use the -k1 option when Clonezilla was restoring in order to resize the partitions proportionally. Here is the output of fdisk -l and pvdisplay:
root@nansen: [/]$ fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 320.0 GB, 320072933376 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 38913 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 17 133610 83 Linux
Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary.
/dev/sda2 17 38911 312412851+ 8e Linux LVM
So fdisk knows that the drive is 320Gb, and the sda2 partition is about 319Gb in size. But LVM isn't buying it:
root@nansen: [/]$ pvdisplay
--- Physical volume ---
PV Name /dev/sda2
VG Name VolGroup00
PV Size 232.78 GB / not usable 2.71 MB
Allocatable yes
PE Size (KByte) 32768
Total PE 7449
Free PE 1
Allocated PE 7448
PV UUID RKhtpa-J34H-GnvD-26v3-bAEI-wccm-f55hwS
Is there some sort of pvchange command that I need to run? Here is some more info in case you need it.
root@nansen: [/]$ pvs
PV VG Fmt Attr PSize PFree
/dev/sda2 VolGroup00 lvm2 a- 232.78G 32.00M
root@nansen: [/]$ df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00 225G 209G 4.5G 98% /
/dev/sda1 127M 12M 108M 10% /boot
tmpfs 125M 0 125M 0% /dev/shm

Option "-k1" is only for partition size, it won't deal with LVM yet. I think you need other tool to resize the LVM.

It is the only one that appears to be missing in PCManfm. I've had a similar problem going the other direction (Linux to Windows, but with pdfs) many months ago. here is ls -l

I have a problem with booting from a USB flash drive. I have Acer TimelineX 3820TG. I have Windows 7 Home from Acer and I installed Mandriva OS from USB(from USB because this Acer doen't have a DVD drive). It was OK, but I want reinstall Windows 7 and so I did. Now I have Windows 7 Professional and it wrote over Mandriva's GRUB. It wasn't a big problem. For a while I was just using Windows 7 but now I am thinking that I need some OS with Linux and I am thinking about Ubuntu. But when I tried to boot from USB with Ubuntu I get a black screen with a blinking cursor after the BIOS POST.
I was trying many applications to create a bootable USB drive and many versions of Ubuntu (and other Linux distributions), but nothing worked. I tried to Google for answers but I found many problems where all booting goes to black screen but in my problem Windows 7 boots fine from disc but from USB doesn't work.

When I try to connect a projector to my laptop (already running) and hit the fn+f7 (the designated button for switching screen), nothing happens. I see "no source found" on projector screen and my laptop screen works perfectly. Now if I restart the laptop with the projector connected, I see all the intial booting messages on the projector screen (not on my laptop), then the gnome login screen appears on both the projector screen and laptop (when the login screen appears on laptop it looks like it has lower resolution than my usual laptop resolution). But immediately after I log in, my laptop screen goes blank, and projector screen becomes the only active screen.
If I restart without the projector, again all normal operation on laptop screen is restored.
I feel like I am missing some very silly options. Any help is appreciated.

so excuse me if I don't use the correct terminology, but what I have are two USB external hard drives joined into one drive using LVM.I originally set this up using 11.2 and then used it for months on a system with 11.1. The LVM drive would show up in the file system as /dev/mapper/Media-Media.I then upgraded that system from 11.1 to 11.4 using a clean install and a "minimal server" selection. Now, the LVM doesn't show up anywhere. In the YaST disk partitioner, it shows a "/dev/Media" as being of the type LVM2 Media with no logical volumes

I am getting a new 4kb sector HDD for my laptop, WD scorpio black 750gb, I would like to image existing partitions on 512bytes sector HDD and move them to the new 4kb sector HDD, what's the best way to do this.
present config is as follows:
Disk /dev/sda: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylinders, total 156301488 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
[Code].....
I am planning to keep the same three partitions as the primary partitions on the new drive and add few more logical partitions. I would have liked to move to GPT but since I need Win 7, I am stuck with MBR partiotion table.
Now, I understand how to partition an Advanced format disk, what I want to know is how to move the existing partitions on the 80 Gb disk to the new disk?
I use Clonezilla to copy partitions but it is not compatible unless both the target and the source disks are already using 4096 sector size.
I can use Acronis True Image WD Edition to clone Win 7 but how do I clone Ubuntu?
Also my Laptop's chipset is limited to SATA 1.5, will it cause any issues, I know the bandwidth is not an issue.

This doesn't seem to me to be particularly a ubuntu or windows problem, though i made the problem through windows. so I'll post it here and on a Windows forum and if it turns out to be specific to windows then you guys can get mad at me and delete it.
My computer had too many failed OSs and partitions on it and blank space I couldn't access, it was a mess. and I got a free windows 7 upgrade CD from Dell, so I decided to nuke it and start fresh.
I put the CD in, there was the simple upgrade button, didn't want that, went to the other option because i wanted to erase everything and start again. The next screen was a list of partitions. I deleted all partitions except the BIOS in the end. And popped windows 7 on, but it was only reading 300 GB. Windows just says: Local disk: 297, no mention of other partitions under "Disk Management", when there was blank space or linux partitions in the past it read them.
I was hoping all this would be solved when I tried to install Lucid, but it's only reading the 297GB as well. Because of this I assume Gparted will have the same problem
If I did something wrong there's no problem with starting everything over again, all i've installed is firefox on 7 and I'm running the Lucid live disk, but what should I do?

I have a small issue which seems to be really wierd with Ubuntu, I have 4 disks 2x120gb 1x250gb and 1x500gb, during install I can only see the 500gb HD and none of the other, I get an LVM drive during install for 250gb but that's no good (see attachment)
Now if i run the install with "nodmraid" the raid goes away but it only sees the 500gb I can however see the other drives in GPartion if i let the installer go onto live Linux, if i then run the install from live the HD still doesn't show, I tried almost everything I change the sata connections to a different place, I've unplugged a few HD to see if there was conflicts and still nothing.
What's even more wierd however is that this only happens in Ubuntu, any other distro I just pick nodmraid and all the drives show.
Also should say my motherboard is a MSI P43 NEO-F, the 2 120gb HD are Western digital the other 2 are maxtor.

So I install Ubuntu 10.10 on a multi-drive, dual boot with windows 7 computer. At almost the end of the install, I see "running grub-install sda" or whatever it is. sda is my windows drive. So rather than asking where to install the bootloader or give you the option like it used to, it just did it to my "first" drive.
What the hell? Now my Windows MBR is gone. I like to maintain that so if my linux drive dies I can still boot into windows via the old windows boot loader.Possible to move Grub2 to my other drive and repair windows 7 drive MBR?

I recently scapped XP Pro on an old laptop (Toshiba Portege 7220)as it was so slow and I installed Ubuntu 9.10 - All installed ok and it worked fine for about a month. Last week I switched on, got the Ubuntu splash screen and thats where it stayed. I gave lappy to a friend of mine that knows about Pc's (hahaha). When I got it back he said he'd wiped the HDD and partially installed xp. The install apparantly hung after the reformat and copying files onto it.My problem now is I can't boot from HDD, Ubuntu Live CD or Windows CD - Laptop is set to boot from cd then hdd. When I try to boot from CD, the cd is read as I hear the drive being used also see light for cd flashing, after a while i get a blank screen with flashing cursor in top left corner and the cd stops. If I remove the HDD and put it in external usb caddy I can see the windows folders/files when plugged into my desk top.My questions are :-
1. Is there any way to make the drive reusable as a internal drive again as I know it works as an external drive.I would like to reinstall Ubuntu on it
2. Is it a fault with the laptop itself - how do I check
