I have an Ubuntu 8.04 machine, I have a NFS drive being mounted when the system starts up. The entry in /etc/fstab looks like:Code:server:/srv/Pictures /mnt/share nfs rw,hard,intr 0 0The drive is mounting fine, but I would really like it if the icon did not show up on the desktop for this drive.Is there anyway to keep it from showing?

View 1 Replies View RelatedNew 10.10 desktop installation on an Acer Aspire 5515 32 bit Vista Home Basic/ 3 GB RAM. There was no option during the Ubuntu installation to select the Windows partition/drive for access via the Ubuntu installation, and the drive does not now appear in "Places." The reason I used 10.10 was because the 10.04 installation on the same machine also would not allow mounting of the Windows drive. However, there was an option to select the Windows drive during the 10.04 install. Couple of things I noticed that were "different."
1) During the 10.04 installation (over which the 10.10 install now resides) there was an option to select either or both of the two user accounts - both administrative - in the Vista installation. I hadn't noticed that before on previous installations. I choose both accounts for later importing, but, again, there was no option to mount the drive upon the finished Ubuntu installation.
2) There could be an issue with what I did with the partition/naming on the Vista installation. Upon restoring to factory settings, I deleted the (10 GB!) restore partition and resized Vista to occupy the newly opened space. But the GRUB entry for Vista says "Windows Recovery Environment" instead of "Windows" or whatever it usually does.
Everything else about this dual-boot installation system is just fine: everything boots and updates and so forth. But I really need that Windows drive to mount so that my friend's kids can import iTunes and other files from Windows to Ubuntu. I also want to be able to run Avast scans on Windows from Ubuntu. I did rummage around a bit by way of locating a solution for this problem, but I can't find anything which "works" or is on point.
I accidentally deleted a system directory so I had to reinstall. I reinstalled, and setup my users again in the same way. When I tried to copy my user files from a saved source, they now appear on the desktop in mass. What I expect is that only files in the Desktop directory show on the desktop, instead all files in the home directory show on the desktop, less the dot files. I can not figure out how the system controls what files show up on the desktop. Comparing the problem user to a working user failed to disclose the difference.

However, as I gather from doing searches is quite common, occasionally I get an error during boot (causing the system to drop to a recovery shell) because the USB drives take time to wake up and the system hasn't found them by the time it reads /etc/fstab.
From doing searches, it seems there is nothing you can do to fstab to fix this, so you need to mount them using an rc.local script instead, using:

The problem is, as I have two USB drives, their /dev/sdxx location changes between boots. I thus want to use UUID codes as I do in fstab, however I haven't found anything about this.
Does anyone know how I can use the mount command and UUID to mount a drive in rc.local and what options I have to use the mount the drive with the same options that I am using in my fstab entry? Obvisouly, I can't refer back to fstab using the mount command, because then I will still get the boot error issue if they are listed in fstab. And there is no space internally for the USB drives as there is already two internal drives.
I have 2 internal drives. One is for the OS and one is for the Data. I tried to get the Data drive to mount automatically at login using some crap I found on a linux blog. Safe to say it didn't work and now I can't mount it with the OS on the OS Drive.
It mounts from a live CD and all the data is perfectly safe. I have been trying to share folders from my main PC which is running Ubuntu 10.04. I have been able to figure out Samba enough to get my a couple of folders shared, but I have been unable to share any folders which are on my external harddrive. After entering the path in my smb.conf file they appear on the network but I am unable to navigate to them. When trying to navigate to them through the network folder on the pc they are actually connected to I get an "Unable to mount location: Failed to mount windows share" dialog box. On the windows pc I am trying to share with I get, "Windows cannot acces \Josh-Desktop

How do I configure my Debian installation to mount external USB drives to mount points based on the volume names of the drives? For instance, if I have a thumb drive with the volume name of "SWORDFISH," how do I have Linux mount it at /media/SWORDFISH? I'm aware that this can be setup in FSTAB, but that requires that I know the UUID of the device beforehand and that I take the time to set each external device up in FSTAB first. That does nothing for me when I have a thumb drive that has never been plugged into my computer before.
This seems to be setup by default in Ubuntu/Kubuntu, but is not working for me with a fresh installation of Debian Squeeze and KDE4. I've spent the past 2 hours Googling for a solution and have turned up nothing. UPDATE: My results are inconsistent. Sometimes Debian mounts devices to mount points based on the volume names, and other times it gives them generic mount points (e.g. /media/usb1).

View 1 Replies View Relatedok so i clicked the desktop cube option in ccsm and it disabled some things that unity needed or something and it messed everything up (grey streaks across screen where top bar and launcher had been). so clicked to set everything back to default although nothing happened except for the streaks went away and i was left with just my desktop bg and the items on it. restarted same thing..
only got onto the browser to post this by looking through the help menu for a link to the Internet lol.
ps. no shortcuts work so no terminal line. but i could always make a launcher on the desktop if theres a comand to set everything straight
I have servers installed with RHEL 4 2.6.9-89.0.9 ELsmp. I tried using uuid and label in /etc/fstab to automount usb drives to mountpoints that I specify after reboot. Unfortunately, it just does not work in all my RHEL4 servers. After every reboot, /etc/fstab will be automatically modified and all configurations related to my USB drives will be changed. Irregardless of whether i use UUID or LABEL in my /etc/fstab.However, it works on RHEL5. But, upgrading is not an option in my environment. I have been googling around looking for alternatives but everything seems to point back to using UUID or LABEL in /etc/fstab. Anyone has tried something that works? Please help me, thank you.

I usually unmount it twice using right-click of the mouse, then it mounts itself back, so i have to unmount it again.. Is there any way to control this? How do i setup the auto-mount option for USB flash drives?

My configuration is ok everything is good when I reboot my system then I go to ubuntu kernel 2.6.28.7. I put user name and password.but there have some problem. When I put user name and password after my desktop is block. I can move the mouse pointer but my desktop is not appearing.
I thought anything mounted to /media would appear on the desktop?mount /dev/sdb1 /media/datadoes mount sdb1... files are available in Terminal. But there is no icon on the desktop. Why? What do I need to do to get a desktop icon?

Since I've upgraded to 10.04, my boot process halts and tells me (paraphrasing) /shared is not ready to mount. To continue, pres S to skip or M to manually mount the drive.
Well, I have it mounting now through GVFS and I don't need this in my startup anymore. Frankly, it's just annoying that it won't boot into Ubuntu right away. So, what's the startup file I need to edit to remove the attempt to mount the network drive?
I can not see my usb stick on the desktop. I have set the options for storage media to automount, and when I run lsusb in as terminal, the usb stick is there. It just seems as if ubuntu is not realizing that the stick is a storage device... I can acess the device in windows XP, so i know that it isn't broken. This appeared when I upgraded from Xubuntu 10.10 to 11.04.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am using Ubuntu 9.10, and is the only OS installed on my system. Yesterday, my desktop stopped working - no right-click function / display of icons. My wallpaper was still intact. The last thing I did was pressed ALT + F2 and executed "gksudo nautilus". This fixed my desktop for the time being, but wasn't showing the correct icons/wallpaper.The real problem started when I restarted. I get the normal login screen, and when I enter my info, it just restarts back to the login screen. I know I am entering the correct information, my caps lock isn't on etc. If I enter my password incorrectly it doesn't reload, it just acts normal and says the pw was wrong. Only when I enter my info correctly does it go to a black screen really quick, then come back to the boot screen.
I am at work right now, but will be checking this thread again later tonight. Please help, I am locked out of my computer which I desperately need to log in to!
For some strange reason, my media mounted in /media is not showing on my desktop on Lucid (10.04).I've been through gconf-editor to make sure the box is checked to show the mounted media in Nautilus. I also checked the options to show my Home folder and Computer icons on the desktop, but these do not show either.Tried ubuntu-tweaks to see if it would work, but no go there either.

The other one does not. I went in to Configuration editor-apps-nautilus-desktop and checked the volumes_visible. That makes the other one not visible/visible but not the one I am having problems with. I read somewhere that devices must be named for it to show up and both devices are named, I even changed the name and that didn't do anything. Again, this device shows up in my computer but not on my desktop like all my other devices do. If anyone has any ideas on how I can get this external hard drive to show up.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am the latest stable Ubuntu (10.10) on an Asus netbook and have both GNOME an XFCE installed. I started with Gnome and than installed XFCE because it works slightly faster on that slow computer. In the beginning everything was fine, but at some point. I don't know when (but it was so also when I was running ubuntu 9.10, before I upgraded to 10). This is what started to happen: when I log in and choose XFCE, I first see my XFCE desktop.
Then it flickers back and forth between my XFCE and Gnome desktop (but the top panel remains the XFCE one), and eventually it settles on the GNOME desktop (which has its own color, different icons in different positions, and its own context menus). The general desktop environment is XFCE: the desktop panel and the itmes on it are XFCE, but the desktop area itself is my GNOME desktop. What I can do to get rid of the display of the GNOME desktop when I choose to use XFCE?
I have just installed Xubuntu and suprisingly it did not ask me to create a partition within its installer like Ubuntu does. So now, I am left with 150mb of free space. I want to expand that amount. The problem is, I do not know where it has been installed on. I have a C and an E drive. Currently, the C drive is mounted and the E drive will not mount even if i press the mount button. Does anyone have a solution?

None of my USB flask drives are showing in the Places menu when I connect them. I have a dual boot with Mint and they work perfectly in Mint. A few days ago I was unsuccessfully trying to get my Broadcom wifi card to work and was following threads to install and uninstall various firmware programs. I am not sure if this caused the loss of the USB drive. When I go into System Profiler and Benchmark nothing is showing under USB devices.

That normally wouldn't be a problem but there's some stuff on my main hard drive that I really don't want to part with, SOOO I figured I'd pick up a new HD and OS and move the files I want to keep before clean installing. I have my new HD installed and everything and it even shows up as a option in the boot menu. I'm currently running Ubuntu from a Flash Drive but only my old hard drive will show up. How can I access my other HD?

Basically what I am attempting to do is access the 6 CentOS 5.2 ISO's via NFS from one of my client machines. The client is able to mount the share and see its sub directories leading up to the mount point of the ISO, but the contents of the mounted ISO image are simply not visible (on the client, they are visible on the server).
Server config (CentOS 5):

NFS is working correctly for other mounts between these two boxes, however.
install of Win7 Pro x64 and I have VirtualBox installed with Ubuntu 10.04 running as a guest OS. I want to get access to the tty1 so I press CTRL + ALT + F1. The screen resizes to a smaller size, turns black, then the gnome desktop reappears but only the top left corner.
