Ubuntu :: Secondary Slave Drive Not Showing Up / See That?

Jun 2, 2011

I just installed ubuntu, this is my first time with it so excuse my ignorance regarding it. My issue is that ubuntu does not show my secondary slave seagate hdd .. it only shows and installs on my western digital master primary one. I need to have access to my slave drive because it has data on it which i wanna use.
My secondary slave shows up in my windows and bios just fine. So what gives?

Installation :: Dual Boot Ubuntu And Xp When It Is On Secondary Slave?

Feb 15, 2011

I'm trying to add my xp drive to the boot menu but I'm having some trouble with it. I've been going over dozens of topics on many forums and I still can't get it to work (I'm new to linux/ubuntu btw).

Ok, so, I have Ubuntu 10.04 on the main drive (primary master) and xp on a second drive (secondary slave) and from what I've read sec. slave is hd3. I added the lines I found in another thread (here I think) but when I tried to boot xp it said the drive didn't exist.

Here's my menu.lst file code...

Ubuntu Installation :: HDD Config - Secondary Master / Slave

I have an EeePC 901, with a 4gb SSD and a 16gb SSD installed. Trying to get Natty installed and hit a few problems not least of which, that it won't fit on the 4gb drive! However in my BIOS setup under HDD config it says:
Secondary Master=4gb
Secondary Slave=16gb
I have no other devices attached. Why aren't they Primary? And I can't seem to switch them round.

They have most of their forum in spanish and the parts that are english are not complete. I managed to sign up but that damn thing is really messed up. I signed up as over 18 but it sends you a form to have signed as under 18. Made 2 different users and still the same problem.

General :: HDD Setup For Dual Boot XP / Install On Slave Drive

Apr 23, 2010

Have older system, self-built around 2000 or so. My plan is to optimize the system for speed and utility, upgrade the OS from W2000 Pro to XP Pro, and include dual boot so as to install some version/distro (?) of Linux to learn on. Present system: X86 based (32 bit), using a P4, 1.8 GHz/400 MHz fsb, with 512mb of DDR RAM installed, can upgrade to 2 gigs total.Shuttle MV42 motherboard, including onboard video and sound (S3 Graphics ProSavage DDR P4M266/VIA 8751/8233 chipset, VIA AC'97 Audio Controller, 2.2 compliant)

If I should decide to use the available 160 gig drive as a dual boot system, in order to install both XP and some version of Linux, how should I set it up? How many partitions will XP and Linux need or work with best? How much space for each OS? What file systems? Should I format/partition it with the existing W2000 OS? What comes first, the chicken or the egg? (XP or Linux?) I have read somewhere that it matters which OS is installed first, due to boot records being overwritten by successive OS installs. I plan to keep W2000 on the first HDD at least until I move my files over to XP. Will I need to switch the master/slave designations after installing XP and Linux on the new drive, since I will want to boot from that drive?

Ubuntu :: Automounting A Specific Partition On Secondary Drive

May 29, 2010

I'm using rsync and crontab to do automatic backups from my /home partition on /dev/sda to my backup drive /dev/sdb3. The backup partition is ext4.

But the backup partition (sdb3) is obviously on a secondary drive, and I want to automount it when I log in. I read that you have to edit /etc/fstab to do this, but I'm not familiar with the process and can't find clear enough instructions, so I was wondering if someone could give me the command I need and maybe explain how it works?

Ubuntu :: Install /home On Secondary Ext3 Drive

Sep 4, 2010

I'm running lucid.

I want to unmount the current /home from sda7 and mount it to sdb1

I had a look at system -> drives management but just was able to mount the secondary drive sdb1 as "DataDrive"

I had a look at /etc/fstab. This doesn't show the recently mounted sda7 "DataDrive"

So now I'm somewhat lost on how to achieve the goal

>> What ist the correct way to do it?

Scenario 1. Copy all contents of /home to the new drive and then switch the /home mount point

Scenario 2. Switch the mount point of /home from sda7 to sdb1 and cp the contents afterwards

>> How do I unmount /home from sda7 and mount it back to the sdb1 (ext3) when lucid doesn't use fstab (does it?) and I don't know where the drives manager stores it's information.

(Just had the idea that I need to use a live cd for not to lock the system drives (sdaN) )

For sure there is a man page or a how to somewhere i didn't just find >> A link to such information might be sufficient

Ubuntu Installation :: On The Secondary Hard Drive Without Touching Any Of The Data

May 26, 2011

I've read the official documentation regarding hard drives and partitions. My pc has two hard drives. a 160gb primary hard drive with windows 7 a 1.5 tb secondary hard drive with about 80gb of free space I would like to know whether I can install ubuntu on the secondary hard drive, without touching any of the data present on that drive. From my limited understanding of storage, files are written all over hard drives during copy, move etc... Is the ubuntu partition manager smart enough not to overwrite any files during installation? Will I get a warning if there is a risk of any data loss on the secondary hard drive? I cannot backup any of the data on the secondary hard drive due to all my external drives currently being full.

Hardware :: Formatting And Accessing The Secondary Drive

Mar 10, 2010

I have a secondary drive on my new RedHat Linux computer and I want to make it permanently accessible from the RedHat system that is now running on the computer.

It is an old Windows NTFS drive that was a secondary drive when this was a Windows machine.

What do I need to do to, and how do I do it:
1) Format it into a format that Linux uses.
2) After it is formatted correctly, permanently mount it so it will always be accessible
3) After it is successfully formatted and mounted, how do I access it? (For example, to add a new ascii text file to it via 'cp')

General :: SSD As Primary Or Secondary Drive On A Small Server?

Jun 6, 2010

I'm pensioning off my 10-years-old home server and replacing it with an Ubuntu 10.04 box. The two storage devices are a Western Digital Caviar Green 2.0TB HD and an Intel X25-M 34nm Gen 2 80GB SATA II 2.5inch SSD (the box has 8GB RAM and an i5 750, if it matters).

I don't care much about boot times (since I don't plan to reboot all that often;-); the main frequent, performance-demanding task will be (re)building large open source C or C++ software packages from sources (as an open source contributor, I do that often).

So, I thought I'd keep the SSD as the secondary drive and the HD as the primary one, using the SSD mostly for the files that can otherwise demand a lot of seeking (esp. in a parallel make).

However, the friendly vendor (perhaps more experienced in Windows systems than in Linux ones) thinks the "normal" way to configure the machine would be with the SSD as the primary drive. I'm pretty rusty on configuring and tuning systems, so, I thought I'd better double check on SuperUser.

As a last resort I am able to access the hard drive when booting from Knoppix from a CD. There are a couple things I would like to try from Knoppix, but do not know if it is possible. First, Is it possible to load the boot files from knoppix? Second, can you roll back the drivers from knoppix?
