When I try to connect a projector to my laptop (already running) and hit the fn+f7 (the designated button for switching screen), nothing happens. I see "no source found" on projector screen and my laptop screen works perfectly. Now if I restart the laptop with the projector connected, I see all the intial booting messages on the projector screen (not on my laptop), then the gnome login screen appears on both the projector screen and laptop (when the login screen appears on laptop it looks like it has lower resolution than my usual laptop resolution). But immediately after I log in, my laptop screen goes blank, and projector screen becomes the only active screen.
If I restart without the projector, again all normal operation on laptop screen is restored.
I feel like I am missing some very silly options. Any help is appreciated.
Here is the output of xrandr when the laptop is connected:

This doesn't seem to me to be particularly a ubuntu or windows problem, though i made the problem through windows. so I'll post it here and on a Windows forum and if it turns out to be specific to windows then you guys can get mad at me and delete it.
My computer had too many failed OSs and partitions on it and blank space I couldn't access, it was a mess. and I got a free windows 7 upgrade CD from Dell, so I decided to nuke it and start fresh.
I put the CD in, there was the simple upgrade button, didn't want that, went to the other option because i wanted to erase everything and start again. The next screen was a list of partitions. I deleted all partitions except the BIOS in the end. And popped windows 7 on, but it was only reading 300 GB. Windows just says: Local disk: 297, no mention of other partitions under "Disk Management", when there was blank space or linux partitions in the past it read them.
I was hoping all this would be solved when I tried to install Lucid, but it's only reading the 297GB as well. Because of this I assume Gparted will have the same problem
If I did something wrong there's no problem with starting everything over again, all i've installed is firefox on 7 and I'm running the Lucid live disk, but what should I do?

I have a small issue which seems to be really wierd with Ubuntu, I have 4 disks 2x120gb 1x250gb and 1x500gb, during install I can only see the 500gb HD and none of the other, I get an LVM drive during install for 250gb but that's no good (see attachment)
Now if i run the install with "nodmraid" the raid goes away but it only sees the 500gb I can however see the other drives in GPartion if i let the installer go onto live Linux, if i then run the install from live the HD still doesn't show, I tried almost everything I change the sata connections to a different place, I've unplugged a few HD to see if there was conflicts and still nothing.
What's even more wierd however is that this only happens in Ubuntu, any other distro I just pick nodmraid and all the drives show.
Also should say my motherboard is a MSI P43 NEO-F, the 2 120gb HD are Western digital the other 2 are maxtor.

I've got a laptop on which I want to install Ubuntu. I've downloaded the disc, burnt it (no errors, verified) and it boots up (with the CD in), shows a short BIOS-style copyright notice, then just a black screen with white text flashing across the screen a thousand times faster than I can read it. If I press a key, the background changes purple, then back to black if I press another key.I can't even SEE the installer. It's kind of like what happens if you set an old CRT monitor to a resolution it can't handle - but the laptop is an LCD that does 1280x800 maximum. What's going on?

I have a Dell Inspiron 1764 with 4GB of RAM. I have Win7 and Lucid as a dual boot. My processor is quad core Intel Core i5 M430 @2.27GHz. The problem is that I should show 4GB of RAM but the Ubuntu side only shows 2.9GB and the readout on conky shows 2.88GB. Why is this? Is Ubuntu not utilizing all available RAM?

I've finally returned to Ubuntu after leaving it in 2005 because of compatibility issues, but now I'm back and am hoping to stay. My experience with Ubuntu has been great by far and I can safely say that it has improved since '05. Anyway, I'm just wanting to fix this minor little occurrence I just had. You see, the Ubuntu clock and weather isn't appearing anymore. It was there and I don't even remember seeing it removed until now. I don't recall doing anything other than browse the web at the moment and I do recall the time being there before I did some surfing. Anyway, My name is still listed in the upper-right corner of the screen still. Just not the time. Did anyone else have this problem and know of a fix?

I'm trying to install a more up to date version of vlc and to do this I have added the "lucid bleed" ppa. However when I do apt-get update && upgrade or aptitude, or view available versions from synaptic, I seem to be only getting the version from the repo? Expected behavior is getting the new version. Observed behavior is getting the old version.

I am using NFS to mount large LUNs from my SAN.have one lun already setup and configured. I am adding an additional partition from the same SAN but I am confused on the setup. I know the LUN is connecting to my NFS serve correctly because I see it listed in my/proc/scsi/scsi as an additional LUN. What I don't see is the drive being displayed in fdisk -l.I did notice one thing though, when I disable the host mapping from the SAN, I see it removed from the /proc/scsi/scsi file AND my fdisk information changes from /dev/sdb TO /dev/sdc (see changes below)
fdisk -l without host mapping to SAN:
Disk /dev/sda: 13999.0 GB, 13999026470912 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 1701951 cylinders

I have created a 9TB raid from 4 1.5TB drives and 3 2TB drives (1.6 and .4 partition). I thought it would be a 9TB partition, and Ubuntu says it is a 9TB partition except when looking at what drive space is left.Nautilus' Properties and System Monitor both say that the raid is 4.1TB with 1TB free but Disk Utility and Nautilus say it is a 9TB RAID. very odd. I have tried checking the raid and the xfs file system. no errors.here is from watch cat /proc/mdstat
Code:
md1 : active raid5 sdg1[5] sdf1[6] sde1[4] sda[0] sdd[3] sdb[2] sdc[1]
8790830976 blocks level 5, 4k chunk, algorithm 2 [7/7] [UUUUUUU]

I can not see my usb stick on the desktop. I have set the options for storage media to automount, and when I run lsusb in as terminal, the usb stick is there. It just seems as if ubuntu is not realizing that the stick is a storage device... I can acess the device in windows XP, so i know that it isn't broken. This appeared when I upgraded from Xubuntu 10.10 to 11.04.

ok so i clicked the desktop cube option in ccsm and it disabled some things that unity needed or something and it messed everything up (grey streaks across screen where top bar and launcher had been). so clicked to set everything back to default although nothing happened except for the streaks went away and i was left with just my desktop bg and the items on it. restarted same thing..
only got onto the browser to post this by looking through the help menu for a link to the Internet lol.
ps. no shortcuts work so no terminal line. but i could always make a launcher on the desktop if theres a comand to set everything straight

Objective: To dual boot Ubuntu 11.04 and Windows 7
Problem: When I use Live USB and try to install Ubuntu 11.04, two of my partitions are not showing up.
System:
C2D 3.1 Ghz
6 Gb of Ram
Nvidia 8800 gt
More info:
I have a self built machine which is currently running windows 7 64 bit.
4 hard drives
2 x 1 TB (mirrored)
1 x 500 Gb (single)
1 x 320* Gb (Windows 7 is installed here) <--both do not show up in the installer
*Split into 247 Gb and 73.4 Gb partitions
fdisk -l output
Code:
Disk /dev/sda: 320.1 GB, 320072933376 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 38913 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x76a81caa .....
This happens in Ubuntu 10.10 and 11.04, the screen shot above was taken in 10.10. Also I can mount the 247 Gb partition in the Live USB, however doing so does not make it show up in the installer.
Things I have tried:
Unplugging all of the hard drives except for the 320 Gb hard drive, as a result not drives showed up in the installer but where present in Gparted and "Places".
