Fedora :: Flash Drive Showing As 2 Volumes?
Sep 8, 2011
I have a load of Maxell 2GB flash drives which I bought new.
It has a Public Partition and a Secure partition on the flash drive.
gparted and disk utility see it as 2 volumes. I need remove the 2MB secure partition to make the 2GB stick bootable. However since it's showing up as 2 volumes I can't see how to do it. Probably requires totally wiping the flash drive.
Can anyone recommend how I go about this?

I use a flash drive for regular back up and other work and this has been very successful until two days ago. None of my USB flask drives are showing in the Places menu when I connect them. I have a dual boot with Mint and they work perfectly in Mint. A few days ago I was unsuccessfully trying to get my Broadcom wifi card to work and was following threads to install and uninstall various firmware programs. I am not sure if this caused the loss of the USB drive. When I go into System Profiler and Benchmark nothing is showing under USB devices.

So I made a text file on a windows machine and brought it home on a flashdrive. When I opened it in PCMan File manager it did not show, but executing ls in a terminal shows the text file just fine. It is the only one that appears to be missing in PCManfm. I've had a similar problem going the other direction (Linux to Windows, but with pdfs) many months ago. here is ls -l
Code: Select all/media/FE32-A2F6/Translation/Kevin$ ls -l

The file is Translation.txt. What is different about this file that it would do such a thing? It doesn't look at all different from above.

I have a bit unusual request.
There are three partitions on my hard drive. Two of them were assigned to mount points / and /home during system installation. The third one was left intact.
After installation the first two partitions were automatically integrated into directory tree and there was a shortcut on the Nautilus sidebar for the third one. Then, I registered the third partition in /etc/fstab for automounting at /home/user/Data directory. For now it works fine, the volume is mounted on startup. But I still have the shortcut to this volume in Nautilus sidebar and icon on my Desktop.
I am interested, if it is possible to disable showing of this items on Desktop and in Nautilus to make the third partition look like registered at system setup time.

I made a persistent install of Ubuntu on a flash drive. I made changes to that installation. The software (Unetboontin) sets this all up. I think it partitions it for you. How do I image that flash drive to another flash drive?

I would like to back up my flash drive in case it gets lost or damaged.the flash drive is bootable with ext2 and a fat partition.the drive is on /dev/sdb1.I think the dd command would back everything up and when restored to a different flash drive everything would boot fine and be as before.I was wondering wow should I use this command to backup and restore or if there is a better option.

"(dun remember the exact name") whenever i select on the AMd.

Im taking the class now in college once a week. My professor said that we need to install any Linux operating systems so I chose Fedora, but he said we need at least 16GB free of space to install it in our computer, sadly i only have 1GB space left remaining. I told him about it and he told me about installing Fedora in my flash drive that has space of 16GB. I really am interested in this course and want to understand all of this stuff so can anyone tell me the process to install Fedora into flash drive so I can boot it anywhere else other than home? Also since he said I need 16GB to install it don't I got to buy 32GB flash drive at least?

I'm interested in trying out Fedora but would use it on my current Netbook (an ASUS eeePC 1000HE). I currently have Mandriva on it though which I don't want to stop using. Can I install it on a Flash Drive? If so, would it be in a sense a LiveDVD type of installation or could I actually do an install on the Flash Drive to use it as a Hard Drive? If so, what would the minimum flash drive size be?
Also, if I use the Flash Drive as a hard drive would it still have to use the internal hard drive or can all 3 partitions (swap, root, and home), be on the flash drive? Would it be possible to run it on more than one machine since I also have an Acer Aspire One?

After searching the boards, I dug through the udev man pages and rule files looking for a way to modify the default automount options for USB flash drives. Apparently, the options are somewhere else. Is there a simple way to add noatime to the default mount options?
Currently, the flash drive is automounted as follows:
I'm using Fedora 12, beta RC 2 in case that makes a difference.

I downloaded the 32 bit Fedora 14 and burned the image to DVD. I didn't want to try to install it on the HDD because the last time I tried to install a distro that used Grub and not Grub2, the only OS I could get into from the boot screen was that OS that I installed with Grub.
I went ahead with the install in hopes that it would see my 4G flash drive, sdc was present so that is where I installed it. I mounted / in sdc1 and the bootloader in sdc. Everything seemed to install, install finished and said I could reboot. On reboot it tried to boot from the USB but just sat there, it never did boot.

My Fedora does not auto detect a flash drive if I get to attach it with the OS already running. I still have to make a reboot and attached the drive right from the start in order for it to be detected/mounted.
Unlike In Mint 7, Ubuntu and XP, it automatically detects the flash drive as soon as it is attached.
make my Fedora detect the flash drive so that I would not have to reboot everytime I would use it.
FWIW here are some outputs:
Code: # /etc/fstab
# Created by anaconda on Thu Feb 4 06:06:47 2010
#
# Accessible filesystems, by reference, are maintained under '/dev/disk'

Here is a way to prepare a USB flash drive to save your kickstart file to it, and then read the kickstart file from the USB drive during a new Fedora installation.A USB flash drive is recognised by the Linux kernel as just another hard drive. This is how I set up my USB flash drive to use it to store my kickstart file on.You will need a working Linux system to set up the USB drive.

still would like to see some actual LAB DATA - but the info here is satisfactory as a "general rule of thumb". I was wondering if I put files on a USB flash drive & left it sit on the shelf, how long it would be before those files would start to deteriorate? - This would have nothing to do with the read/write cycle as in the "shelf time" it wouldn't be used.

I am running a 32-bit Fedora 11 OS (in GNOME).
My 2GB Kingston Flash Drive is plugged into my hp pavilion dv6000; the light on the flash drive is on but there is no icon on my desktop, and it is also missing from the 'Places' tab.
After typing fdisk -l I receive the following message:
Disk /dev/sda: 120.0 GB, 120034123776 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 14593 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x000d7c32

I've plugged in the drive to different USB slots to no avail. I also plugged in my e-reader to see if my USB slots were malfunctioning, but the e-reader was detected by Fedora.
I have plugged the thumb drive into my Windows 7 Desktop PC with the hope of the OS recognizing the drive, but the result is the same as in my laptop.

I bought a HP USB Flash Drive v117r 16GB
I bought this 3 months ago and everything worked fine. However, I went to plug it into my computer and nothing came up in the file manager, the Flash drive was not detected.
I have PC running Fedora 15 and I have a iMac. The Flash drive didn't work for any of these. However, I have other Flash drives that I have had for many years and they still work. I have also tried different usb ports.
Once thing that is positive in my /var/log/messages I get the following:

I have downloaded the DVD iso for Fedora 14, however, I do not want to burn a DVD for installation, and would like to be able to perform the upgrade from a USB flash drive. Where can I find information that will explain how to make a bootable flash drive that can install Fedora 14?

I've a flash drive that it's partitions formatted as fat32, ex4 and encrypted ext4. It works fine on the system that I've formatted it on, but when I try to use it on my other Linux distributions I get these problems:
* ext4 partition accessible by root only.
* after entering my pass-phrase I get
Code: /dev/mapper/udisks-luks-uuid-***** uid1000 is mounted What I'm asking for is a way to create the ext4 file system without being attached to some UID and to be accessible by any user.

I am relatively new to Fedora 15, but used 13 for a while with no issues. Yesterday a windows user put a flash drive into my computer for me to copy something on to. (This may be conincidental.) I then put the computer into suspend or hibernate or whatever and now it won't start up. At all. And I'm stuck as 'everything' I need is on that computer.
