I would like to know as you see in windows, when you plug in a device it tells you some thing whether it is 2.0 or not. Is there a way to tell if the usb extension cable is 2.0 compatible? How about the usb device itself?
View 1 RepliesI downloaded Ubuntu 10.4 netbook edition for my toshiba satellite a105 laptop (windows XP) burned it to a CD, restarted my computer with the disc in drive, pressed f12 at the appropriate time, chose to boot from CD. after sitting for a second i get error PXE-e61 media test failure, check cable. and then it boots XP normally. how do i get around this to install linux!
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Inspirion 5150. The onboard sound card was blown 3 years ago. OS is Ubuntu 8.10. I am also a HAM radio operator and use the computer for digital modes using a USB device that acts as an external sound card modem for me.
The program that I use for that is fldigi. The device is Signalink USB by Tigertronics. the device has the ability to have speakers plugged in to it. Question: Is there a way to have the computer send the audio out the USB cable to the device?
I have looked at my sound settings and there are USB devices but none of them are the one(s) that I use with my Signalink device. If it can't be done, no worries -- have not really needed it so far. Just something nice to have.
I am new to linux having just abandoned Windows due to stability issues. I have a Hauppage remote with a usb ir receiver. This worked fine under windows using the drivers for the windows media center remote. I can't however get this to work under Linux. What I am really looking for is a method, perhaps using a command line in the terminal window to be able to test and see if the OS has actually detected the device. I have tried irw, but there is no response. If I know that the device is connected, then I can start looking at issues of identifying the correct drivers for the device.

It has the IP 192.168.0.105 and I am experiencing problems with setting up HPLIP... I know I am not the only one to have this problem, but I cant find specific info for slackware and all the posts I've found on the web are outdated, often refering to slack 9 or having been posted prior to 2006....
I use Slackware -Current (prior to 13.1 release), CUPS V1.4.3 and HPLIP V3.10.2. When I try to setup my device in HPLIP (hp-setup), I select "network/ethernet/wireless device", then HPLIP discovers my printer @ 192.168.0.105 (like I expect), and then I click "add printer" and I get:

I can setup the device in CUPS, but if I proceed this way, I will not be able to select the attached scanner as a resource in XSANE.In other words, if I setup the all-in-one device with CUPS, it is considered only a simple printer..I remember that I had the same problem with Slackware 12.2 about 14 months ago, but cannot remember how I fixed it.

So, how do I get the whole HDD visible to the others computers (either/both) and be able to write to it? I want to put Xubuntu on it, and earse the rest of the Hard Drive. The computers getting this are the iMac G3s and the eMac G4. The eMac has 256MB RAM, 40GB HDD, and a 700MHz processor. Two iMacs have 128MB RAM, 40GB HDD, and a 600MHz Processor. The other iMac is the same as the rest but has a 500MHz processor.

I can't get a certain harddrive out of its mounting (screws too tight) , but I want it connected to a different computer. Is it possible to have the harddrive's powercable connected to one computer, and its SATA cable connected to another computer's motherboard? (The powercable is too short to connect it to the other computer.)

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to figure out what in the world is going on with my sound in OpenSuSE. I put in a brand new Audigy chipset soundcard and finally got some sound to come out of the speakers. I used the guide here: SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE. to fix the permissions on my sound and am able to get sound-test to play sounds as well as connect to the sound device in my vmware and play sounds. That being said, I have terrible sound quality coming out. There is a lot of static sound like white noise and the volume of the actual sound played is very low compared to the noise. The sounds also distort somewhat.
I have tried the pulse audio change in the tutorial above also and have been searching around google. The only problem that I saw similar was a person who fixed the problem by updating KDE. I don't have KDE, I'm using Afterstep.
All my music editing software programs say, "unable to open device /dev/dsp.Device or resource busy." How can I fix this?

I've bought an X10 Home Automation USB interface: the CM15.
This is the information lsusb gives:

So my problem is: With internet cable I have connected to modem which support IPTV, so I can watch it, and I can't browse. With my wireless connection I browsing, and I can't watching IPTV.
I need anwser to this if can I set cable connection to only VLC (with which I can watching IPTV), and wireless connection to other programs or only Firefox?
P.S.: I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit.
I just purchased an HP Pavilion p6710f desktop with an ralink wireless n card, and 11.04 won't recognize it in 'Additional Drivers'. I can't get it to an ethernet cable, and then check for more additional drivers (did this on an old laptop), so what can I do??

My problem is that the device doesn't exist in /dev/partitions which will block my following test.BTW, I found dm-0 in /dev/partitions. Is it the same as /dev/mapper/sc0? But the device /dev/dm-0 doesn't exist!

I am using FC10 laptop as USB host for testing, and it runs some small apps based on sg3. All has been well for ~ a week. The FC10 laptop is able to communicate with the device and retrieve data. Suddenly, starting from today, the laptop is not able to properly detect the device. When plugged-in, the MSC device is detected as input device (I thought). This is observed from "dmesg" output and changes in "/dev/input/".The device under development is running at full speed. When I connect to winXP, no problem. A windows file explorer pops up, showing the content of the drive.Also, the FC10 has no problem with other USB flash drive (high speed).

i got this old UPS from compaq long back and installed it with a new battery. Thing is i need to connect it to my PC using this serial cable. But my mobo doest have 1. So i bought a COM port cable converter to serial and have attached the UPS through it.
Now after all this done, my PC wont detect any UPS.. i dont know whether its detecting it or not...

I am having a problem when I hook my computer up to my tv the desktop is bigger than the screen will allow. Is there a way to shrink the desktop down so that it fits within the screen? I have tried various settings for sound (Alsa, PulseAudio), the AC97 drivers are installed in the Windows xp guest os, but there is no sound and there is an unknown audio device (in the windows device manager). If I remove the AC97 drivers and use the soundblaster16 drivers in the Vbox settings there is no unknown sound device, but there's still no sound. why I can't get sound working?
