Ubuntu / Apple :: EMac And IMac File Sharing With Ethernet Cable And Other Cable?

Oct 12, 2010

how I could file share, or make the whole Hard Drive (HDD) accessible to another computer. The two other computers I have are a Toshiba Laptop with Ethernet and USB, and a iMac Intel with Firewire, USB, and Ethernet. Putting these to use along with:

Three Ethernet Cables
Two Printer Peripheral USB Cables
The Two Computers
A 2GB Flash Drive

That is all I can think of right now. I do not want to use CDs. In a way, I would like to do a network boot. So, how do I get the whole HDD visible to the others computers (either/both) and be able to write to it? I want to put Xubuntu on it, and earse the rest of the Hard Drive. The computers getting this are the iMac G3s and the eMac G4. The eMac has 256MB RAM, 40GB HDD, and a 700MHz processor. Two iMacs have 128MB RAM, 40GB HDD, and a 600MHz Processor. The other iMac is the same as the rest but has a 500MHz processor.

Ubuntu Networking :: Cable Modem Networking - Can't Connect To Each Other On The Home Network

Feb 14, 2010

I just got connected to Charter Cable Internet service a few days ago and I'm having a weird problem with my home network. Prior to this my network worked fine. On my network I have a desktop running Ubuntu 9.10/64 and Virtualbox with WinXP installed, an HTPC with Ubuntu 9.10/32 installed and a laptop dual booted with Ubuntu 9.10/32 and WinXP. The desktop and HTPC are hard wired to a wireless router and the laptop is wireless. The cable modem is hard wired to the router. I have samba installed and UFW is disabled. The problem is: with the cable modem turned off or on standby, all machines connect to each other and can transfer files, etc just fine but when I activate the cable modem all of the machines can connect to the Internet but the machines running Ubuntu can't connect to each other on the home network. If I boot the laptop into Windows, it can connect to the Linux machines just fine but if I boot it into Linux, it won't connect to the Linux machines but it can connect to the Internet and as far as the desktop, Ubuntu won't connect to the network but Windows running in the Virtualbox with bridged networking can connect to all of the machines.

Ubuntu Networking :: Using Both Wireless And Cable?

I normally use a cable to connect to the Internet, but I also use the wireless network regularly. So I'd like Ubuntu to automatically use the wired connection except when there isn't any.

I also have the unlock keyring problem (because of auto login and wireless Internet), does anyone know a solution to that problem? (It's quite disturbing to get that window each time you start the pc even if you aren't going to use wireless Internet)

Ubuntu 10.04, auto login, Intel Core 2 Quad Mobile Q9000, ATI HD 4670, 4 GB RAM, Broadcom NetLink BCM5784M Gigabit Ethernet PCIe, Intel Wireless WiFi Link 5100

Networking :: 2 Subnets Over The Same Cable?

Nov 27, 2010

I have a 2-floor house, with a single ethernet cable from the ground floor to the 1st. Downstair there is my ADSL modem, which is connected to the router upstair through this one cable. Now, I would like to have some more ethernet ports on the ground floor, but there's no room left to run another cable between the floors, so here's the big question: can I run both the modem-router connection and my regular LAN (which are on different subnets) through that one cable, with a switch at both ends?

To make it a little more clear, here is my present configuration

Code:

DOWNSTAIR UPSTAIR
ADSL Modem ------- Router --- Clients

Here is what i would like to do:

Code:

DOWNSTAIR UPSTAIR
ADSL Modem ---- Switch ------ Switch ----(WAN Port) Router --- Clients
Clients ---- ----(LAN Port)

Would it work?

Networking :: Not Getting IP When N/w Cable Plugged In

Dec 23, 2009

I am working on h/w device having linux kernel version 2.6.27 with busybox installed. I observed below problems while working on jffs2 image is flashed on the board.

1)When the board is powered-up with n/w cable is connected, it doesn't get IP address automatically, I have to use "/etc/init.d/networking restart" in init script(/etc/init.d/rcS) to get the IP address.(I am using dynamic addressing)

2)When the board is powered-up with n/w cable is unplugged and plugging-in once the device is started, I get "link up" message from the system, but still the IP is missing in eth0 interface.

I have udhcpc(v1.14.1) installed. Giving below commands manually, get the IP for device:

Code:
ifdown eth0
/etc/init.d/networking restart
but It is not pretty solution for me !

What I want is, the device should get IP address automatically once the n/w cable is plugged-in. (as we get in desktop m/c's). Am I missing some scripts or configuration parameters?

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Connection Dies With No Cable

Apr 15, 2010

I recently installed the vt6656 wireless pci card that came with my zotac motherboard. I can associate with my ap and get an ip address successfully. When I disconnect my ethernet cable, however, my wireless interface stops responding (can't ping it). The box itself is in a place where I don't have a monitor connected to it so I cant see anything since my ssh session gets killed as soon as I disconnect the ethernet cable.

What would be the reason why the ehternet cable being unplugged, disconnects my wifi card as well? Does something get triggered? I did some testing with iptables, blocking the 8080 traffic to the wired interface, and noticed that the 8080 traffic also gets blocked to the wifi ip. I'm afraid that this never worked properly to begin with.

Ubuntu Networking :: Serial Cable Crossover Connection?

Oct 13, 2010

I've been reading too much and understanding too little. What I have: Lucid laptop & desktop. Both have ethernet > hub > internet. What I want: connect them directly by the serial ports so the laptop can access the desktop's drives, and the desktop can be retired from the internet. I've got an old DB-25 null-modem, last used for multiplayer Doom. The laptop's dock has DB-9, so the connections is desktop > null-modem > Belkin DB-25 - DB-9 cable > laptop.

I had hoped this post would get me somewhere:[URL].. No such luck. When I ping 'grin.local', the connection is through the internet. If I disconnect the hub, i cannot ping.

Dunno if there's something more I should do to enable serial connection in Lucid, or if my null-modem is no longer good. I'm also rather curious how "grin.local" manages a connection through my ISP's system. These are DHCP. Shouldn't that have required the full numerical IP?

(It's nothing to do with the hub. Checked that by connecting a third box to the hub. My ISP only hands out two IP. I couldn't ping the third box.)

Ubuntu Networking :: Cannot Get ETH0 To Appear In Ifconfig Via CAT5 Cable

Nov 7, 2010

I'm trying to get my Ubunutu and OSX systems to connected via a cat5 cable to transfer some large files around very quickly. Now i know normally this would require a crossover cable as it's a direct connection but the macbook/OSX can handle changing the wires round to make it work like a crossover cable as I've done it before. However the macbook creates a self-assigned IP or as I've tried I've set it to :
IP:10.10.0.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.0

Then I've setup the Ubuntu system both through the System>Admin>Network panel as:
IP:10.10.0.2
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
and my /etc/network/interfaces file is the same;
#lines added to get static crossover cable working
auto lo
iface eth0 inet static
address 10.10.0.2
netmask 255.255.255.0

Yet when I run ifconfig in the terminal eth0 isn't present
Code:
htpc:~$ ifconfig
lo Link encap:Local Loopback

collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)
Interrupt:23 Base address:0xe000

Also even when I try and ping 10.10.0.2 either from my OS X or the actually Ubunutu machine all I get is:
Code:
ping 10.10.0.1
PING 10.10.0.1 (10.10.0.1): 56 data bytes
Request timeout for icmp_seq 0
Request timeout for icmp_seq 1
Request timeout for icmp_seq 2
Request timeout for icmp_seq 3

Yet the Ubunutu machine is also connected to Wifi and when I ping it's own address I get the expected response. To me it just seems like eth0 isn't being recognised somwhere or it's not turned on yet I can't seem to find any toggles or settings for it anywhere. Further more if I check >System>Admin>Network Tools the IP for eth0 is 0.0.0.0. What could be going wrong and why no IP set correctly?

Networking :: Frayed Cable Symptoms?

Allright, I bought a new dedicated box about two months ago. For most of the time, I have had major intermittent latency and downtime.Pings and traceroutes would always work, <70ms. However, all daemons would be inaccessible for periods of time spanning from 5 minutes to hours, at which point I would have the box rebooted and it would work again. After having hardware tests done numerous times, they kept saying it was software related. No logs showed problems. Finally, tonight a tech found that the network cable was frayed or something of that nature. "Noticed that your connection to the switch was exposed and replaced the cable"Would that create symptoms I've described above?

Ubuntu Networking :: Sharing 10.10 Network With Win7 Over Cat5 Cable?

Mar 6, 2011

Im a long time Ubuntu user (since 5.04), but networks were never my speciality, I have a desktop running 10.10, connected to the internet trough a US robotics modem (connection eth1), and i want to share its network with my laptop running win7, over a cat5 cable (connection eth0), but the problem is I dont seem to understand what i am doing wrong, what the missing steps required, or in which end is the problem (either ubuntu or windows side).

From what I could grasp was needed googling about the subject, i already set the eth0 connection to share with other computers (in network manager edit connections auto eth0 ipv4 configuration set to share with other computers). Also using the cli set eth0 for static ip using :

Code:
sudo ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.1 Now the question is what i am missing? or is everything needed already done and i just have to properly configure the win7 side (which i already checked several times)?

Here is my ifconfig output:

Code:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet Endereo de HW 00:01:29:a6:55:fe
inet end.: 10.42.43.1 Bcast:10.42.43.255 Masc:255.255.255.0

Ubuntu Networking :: ZModem Link Over Null Modem Cable ?

Mar 28, 2011

I am writing a simple script which will transmit files over a serial connection. I have simplified the setup to test the solution, so the final configuration will be a bit more complicated.

Current setup:
1. 2 RS232 com ports connected with a null modem in between.
2. Open minicom on both
3. Put in 19200,8,N,1 as parameters
4. Open text travels both ways
5. Files sent over Zmodem transfer well.

Both serial adapters are USB, but I tried it also with real com ports, and same story. For simplicity, I will call one adapter "receiving" and the other "sending" to signify from which side I want to send the files through zmodem.

Then I close minicom on the "sending" site without reseting the port (I have also tried setting everything up with stty)

On sending site:

Code:

I tried googling but no solution helps. Please do not try to suggest to use minicom on both sides, because this is going to be an unattended process in the end.

How to transfer a file with zmodem using rz and sz without minicom.
