OpenSUSE Hardware :: Drivers For Brother HL-2040?

Dec 22, 2010

I tried to print something today with my Brother HL-2040 series printer, and it seems like there are no drivers for that particular model. Is there a source I haven't thought of, or are there really no drivers?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Brother HL-2040 Prints Empty Pages?

Mar 14, 2010

I have openSUSE 11.2 and printer Brother HL-2040 connected to my openSUSE laptop. It was correctly recognized by manufacturer and model and was "automagically" installed by downloading the appropriate driver. Whenever I click "print" its name correctly appears on the page on which you choose where to send the print jobs to. And when I click "print" it prints... empty pages. When I chose to print the test page, 10 empty pages came out.
This printer worked just fine under Ubuntu 9.04 and winXP. I read the topic here about HL-2040 in openSUSE 11.2 using the driver of 2060 but upon checking both the printer config page and CUPS web admin page it was confirmed that the driver is actually the correct required one, HL-2060 Foomatic/Postscript.

Fedora :: Brother HL 2040 Does Not Print Anything

I believe I have installed my Brother HL 2040 printer on my Fedora 11 64 bit system. However, every time I click printer the printer goes through its warm up procedure but it does not print anything. There is paper in the tray and I know it was working when I was running Fedora 10. It is shown under the Printers heading under Administration.

Hardware :: Brother HL 2040 Only Prints Code?

Jul 5, 2010

In the past when I had Slackware 12 with brother HL-2040 printer drivers installed, the printer was working fine. Then I upgraded to slackware 13, but I had too many problems with it so I downgraded back to 12 and reinstalled everything related to slackware 12. Now I can't get the printer to work properly. I installed both the LPR and the CUPS drivers (in RPM packages) provided by brother for linux. I find that now every time I try to print something (even graphics) in KDE 3.5 (for slackware 12), the printer prints excessive pages where the first page starts with something like this:

%!PS-Adobe-3.0
%%LanguageLevel: 1

Are there any special settings that I am unaware of that I should be changing in order for the proper printout to appear? Is there something special that I have to install that I wasn't previously told about?

Ubuntu :: Two Sided Printing Not Enabled For Brother HL 2040

Jul 23, 2010

I know for a fact manual duplex is supported by my printer since in windows it is able to do so unproblematically. After downloading official driver from Brother, printer works but File > Print > Page Setup > Layout > Two-sided > "NOT AVAILABLE" (option greyed out). I need the prompts to come up to tell me when to flip the pages and visually illustrate what needs to be done. This prompt and automatic behaviour by the printer is available in Windows. (Do not recommend to me Gnome Manual Duplex. It's a poor substitute for manual duplexing and doesn't even do what it claims to do.) How to get two-sided printing enabled?

Hardware :: Cups 1.4.3 - Cannot Modify Brother HL 2040 Printer

Feb 6, 2011

I cannot modify my printer in Cups. In the past when I wanted to add a printer, or modify an installed printer, I clicked on the Admin tab, and I get a prompt to enter a password. I never get the prompt to enter user - root and the root password. So I can not add a printer, or modify one that is installed. My Brother HL-2040 is still working, I can print jobs O.K. it will not print test page. Why do I care? I want to have a better understanding of the location on the lpr and cupswrapper drivers on this system.

I have installed Slackware 13.1 on a second drive, and am trying to convert to that system. In 13.1 cups asks me for Admin user and password, I can enter root + password, and add a printer, and Mandy used to. However, in 13.1 after converting the .rpm files to .tgz files and installing them with pkgtool, I can not 'see' the lpr or cupswrapper driver in 13.1. I wanted to see what it looked like in Mandriva, however I can't and don't know why.

Ubuntu :: Brother HL 2040 Printer Shoots Out Blank Pages

Aug 5, 2011

I'm trying to get a Brother HL-2040 printer working, without much success. I installed the brother-cups driver, but that didn't work. When I try to print, the printer just shoots out blank pages, and the only way I can stop it is by unplugging the printer. Worked OK on Ubuntu 10.10. I have gnome fallback, if that matters. There's a post saying that I need to download a ppd file, [URL] but when I try to get it, it opens a page instead of downloading a file. Also the information is from 2008, and I don't know how well that will work with all the changes that have been made to Ubuntu and the newer kernel. I got lucky! went to: [URL] and got the .deb files for the lpr driver and the cups driver. Had to use sudo dpkg -i in the terminal, as I couldn't get the software GUI to work. But it prints.

Ubuntu :: 64bit Drivers Not Available From Brother (printer)?

Aug 14, 2010

This site has drivers for my new Brother HL-3040CN laser printer ... but it says its the wrong architecture when I try to open the first one with GDebi Package Installer. I'm kind of stuck now ...should I try just plugging the printer into the computer with the network cable and seeing if Ubuntu will automatically take care of drivers? For reference I saw this topic when I googled the issue [URL] This site says 64 bit drivers are available for Ubuntu 9.10, only 32 bit drivers are available for Ubuntu 10.04. I am running 10.04 (64bit) ... should I return the printer?

I have just installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on my AMD 64 bit desktop. I have a usb connection for my Brother MFC 8860DN printer. I used the synaptic package manager to install the printer drivers ubuntu already had in their repository for my printer model. When I connect my printer to the computer Ubuntu recognizes the model, but cannot detect the printer drivers I have already installed. The printer drivers were installed to /usr where a Brother folder was created. the Cupswrapper and lpd files are in the Brother folder. How can I get the system to detect its own files so I can get the printer to work?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Can't Get Brother HL-2030 To Print

Oct 11, 2010

I just installed openSUSE 11.3 (Gnome GUI). All hardware functions pico bello (Agfa SnapScan e42), card reader ACR038, but ... I can't get my Brother HL-2030 to print.

It is not on the list of Brother printers to be chosen from, so I went to the Brother site in order to get the correct driver, where I can download, after having clicked on the Brother 2030 rpm, a file called cupswrapperHL2040-2.0.1-1.i386.rpm.

So, this is the first thing that surprised me : 2040 instead of 2030 ?

I then tried to install it by right-clicking on the item and then choosing Open with package installer but it returns this error :

nothing provides brhl2040lpr needed by cupswrapperHL2040-2.0.1-1.i386

I remember I had the same problem after installing openSUSE 11.1 but I was able to resolve it rather quickly. So, with openSUSE 11.1 I could print what I wanted.

OpenSUSE Install :: Boot - After Installing New Graphics Drivers OpenSUSE 11.4

Jul 14, 2011

I have installed openSUSE 11.4, and I really like it compared to other linux versions I've tried, but I find it requires a bit more linux know-how.

Being fairly new to linux, it has been quite the effort to learn but I started getting the hang of things via online support and such. Lately I've been having some problems.

I need linux to run a TCAD program, and it requires some openGL functionality and was giving me errors when I tried entering the software related modeling GUI.

Anyhow, I thought it had to do with my graphics drivers, so I decided to update them via ATI proprietary driver. After doing this, the system booted me into the console rather than X.

I tried numerous online guides on how to fix the issues, by running all sorts of boot commands (nomodset), and I read the graphics driver theory, as well as trouble shooting ATI graphics.

In the process, I also installed a radeonhd-xorg11-something through YAST, and that caused a black screen altogether upon boot. I managed to boot into failsafe with x, and from there I removed it via YAST, however this did not resolve issues. I also deleted any xorg.cionf files in hopes that the system will default back to the radeon driver.

As it stands right now, I can only boot into my system via failsafe mode. I'm keeping the unit off for now as it's probably tired from all the hard reboots I had to do . If someone can help me resolve this issue, I can turn it on and enter any commands required, such as finding out the graphics card, the kernel, the driver currently running, etc and I can post it here.

When I print something, it goes through the print que to the the printer with no error messages, however the printer never prints the document. When I take the printer off line, Ubuntu senses it's offline and when I return the printer online Ubuntu knows it's back online. So I know Ubuntu is talking to the printer. It's just the print jobs never print. I am dual booting with Windows XP. The printer works fine when in XP.

Ubuntu :: Brother HL-4070CDW (with Wi-Fi) Stopped Printing

Mar 1, 2010

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 on a Sony Z series laptop which is also dual booted with MS Vista. My Brother printer (which has wi-fi) has stopped printing with Ubuntu. The Brother does still print with Vista using the wireless connection.

I've tried deleting the network printer software and reinstalling it. The installation program will locate the Brother printer and it will appear to have been installed properly. When I try to do a test print using Ubuntu, the "document print status" window will indicate the print job is pending. However, it will stay pending indefinitely. I've used the printing troubleshooter guide and it has advised that:

- The queue 'Brother-HL-4070CDW' is not enabled. The reason given is: 'Unable to locate printer 'BRWCEB885'!'.

- To enable it, select the 'Enabled' checkbox in the 'Policies' tab for the printer in the printer administration tool. To start this tool, select System->Administration->Printing from the main menu.

When I go to the policies tab and check the 'Enabled' box and then try to apply this selection, the 'Enabled' box automatically unchecks and I get a print error message:

- Printer Error. There was problem sending document 'Test Page' (job 117) to the printer.

I seem to be caught in an endless loop without anything printing.
