Ubuntu :: How To Speed Up Printing With Brother HL 4040 CDN
May 26, 2011
I have switched entirely to linux I have all the windows programs I need running in Wine, but my only gripe is that in Windows I could print 20 pgs/min in Ubuntu I can currently print maybe 4 pgs/ 20 min. I downloaded extra CUPS drivers from synaptic for my printer along with the LPD network driver when I first configured the my brother network printer.

I have a brother HL 4040CDN. I'm running ubuntu hardy. Does anybody know if there's a command line option that would allow me to print double sided from this machine? Or if there's a gui that I can download from Brother to specify preferences for this machine?

I am using Ubuntu 9.10. I have a Brother MFC 240C printer. I installed the print driver from here. Driver installed with no problem. When I print something, it goes through the print que to the the printer with no error messages, however the printer never prints the document. When I take the printer off line, Ubuntu senses it's offline and when I return the printer online Ubuntu knows it's back online. So I know Ubuntu is talking to the printer. It's just the print jobs never print. I am dual booting with Windows XP. The printer works fine when in XP.

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 on a Sony Z series laptop which is also dual booted with MS Vista. My Brother printer (which has wi-fi) has stopped printing with Ubuntu. The Brother does still print with Vista using the wireless connection.
I've tried deleting the network printer software and reinstalling it. The installation program will locate the Brother printer and it will appear to have been installed properly. When I try to do a test print using Ubuntu, the "document print status" window will indicate the print job is pending. However, it will stay pending indefinitely. I've used the printing troubleshooter guide and it has advised that:
- The queue 'Brother-HL-4070CDW' is not enabled. The reason given is: 'Unable to locate printer 'BRWCEB885'!'.
- To enable it, select the 'Enabled' checkbox in the 'Policies' tab for the printer in the printer administration tool. To start this tool, select System->Administration->Printing from the main menu.
When I go to the policies tab and check the 'Enabled' box and then try to apply this selection, the 'Enabled' box automatically unchecks and I get a print error message:
- Printer Error. There was problem sending document 'Test Page' (job 117) to the printer.
I seem to be caught in an endless loop without anything printing.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit. I just got a Brother hl-2140 printer installed the drivers via the brother site and I can't print pdf's. I can print gedit, openoffice, etc... but no PDF's. This is kind of a deal breaker.

I know for a fact manual duplex is supported by my printer since in windows it is able to do so unproblematically. After downloading official driver from Brother, printer works but File > Print > Page Setup > Layout > Two-sided > "NOT AVAILABLE" (option greyed out). I need the prompts to come up to tell me when to flip the pages and visually illustrate what needs to be done. This prompt and automatic behaviour by the printer is available in Windows. (Do not recommend to me Gnome Manual Duplex. It's a poor substitute for manual duplexing and doesn't even do what it claims to do.) How to get two-sided printing enabled?

Don't know where this should go, so I put it here for starters! I want to print documents on both sides of an A4 sheet, using a Brother HL-1230 printer. Is there a way of getting the odd numbered pages out first (then a pause?) and the even numbered pages after? To do this manually is tedious on a long (14 page) doc. Way back in the days of that other op. sys. I had a program (WordPerfect?) Whose printer driver would do this. Is there one for Ubuntu?

This printer has worked fine with FC14 on my AMD x86_64 system for months using the printer drivers from the Brother Solutions Center web site (see below). I installed FC15 today from the network CD and installed the same printer drivers. Test print works fine, and just now this web page printed OK using Firefox. But when I try to print from LibreOffice Writer or Thunderbird, a message appears briefly at the bottom of my Gnome3 desktop that the job is being printed and then another message saying that printing is complete. Nothing is sent to the printer, however. In Thunderbird, the Print dialog window says the status of the MFC-240C is "No pages found!" I tried deleting the printer using System Setings -> Printers and reinstalling using system-config-printer, selecting the Brother MFC-240C, with no change.
Brother drivers:
mfc240clpr-1.0.1-1.i386.rpm
mfc240ccupswrapper-1.0.1-1.i386.rpm

I have been printing with this laser printer (connected via LAN) for months without a single glitch, when suddenly today I had to quickly print a document. I could not print it. At first I thought the printer was off, then I double checked it was on. I restarted the CUPS server, reinstalled the printer in CUPS, nothing will work. When I send a print job, (I am using XFCE btw), I see the printer icon in the tasktray and it has a small warning sign.
Opening the print queue, I see "Processing - Printer Warning". In cups, I see nothing unusual. It says (in the printer queue): processing since Sat 25 Jun 2011 10:13:30 AM EDT. I can print a test page FROM the Printer web interface, confirming the printer works. I can print with the other printers. CUPS detects the printer and does not report anything unusual. What is going on with CUPS?

I have a mfc-440cn installed and working in Debian wheezy 7.4 (the last one) but I cant fix to it for printing in grey, I was using the pdf default reader and send some pages to printing indicating not to print them in color just greys colors but doesn't respect that order, it prints full color. When I see the conf page for the printer it stills have the configuration I did indicating to print grey but it ignores it and print as it wants (full color). Note that I installed thr mfc according the instructions from the brother support page with no trouble but is just that it only wants to print full color.

I expected more from ubuntu 10.4 with regards to printing with exact size photos and with poor auto colour printing but the situation remains unchanged! for instance .. the photo size configurations for ubuntu/fspot/gimp and others are not compatible with my printers (HP and Brother) .. here in Europe a typical standard size photo (10x15inches or 150x100mm are not even on the Ubuntu listing? I have tried all listed possibilities including "custom" (which does not seem to ever work correctly?)and the result at best is photos with uneven boarders or at worse my printer goes a bit crazy with much wasted photo paper and expensive ink ...even photos selected for "no boarders" still produces photos with the self same uneven boarders.
I have tried pretty much everything over time following advice in this forum and including using HPlip and updating drivers required for my Brother printer but the root problem seemingly lies with the Ubunto photo size setup listing. Working with Ubuntu over the years I have found that it can do pretty much everything that Windows can do except for this dam ongoing photo quality and configuration problem.

I've just installed Slackware 13.1 in two different laptops for first time. I have some strange internet browsing behaviour in one of the laptops. I've installed 2 internet browsers(firefox, opera) using the directions from Slackbuilds.org and there is also konqueror pre-installed. Moreover I installed Wicd network manager.
I can browse some pages e.g. ..... with firefox very slowly but NEVER facebook. I can browse almost any page, even facebook, with OPERA but very very slowly. The same goes with konqueror... Wicd shows that i am always connected with my WPA wireless network

I'm using 9.10 on x86 architecture. I've searched the forums and anything related to scanning talks about editing /etc/udev/rules.d/45-libsane.rules which doesn't seem to exist on my system. Judging from the dates most of these posts probably relate to intrepid or jaunty. XSane just says 'no devices available'. Printing works fine.

During installation of Ubuntu 10.04, there was no driver found for my Brother MFC-665CW printer/scanner. However, I recently learned on the Forum that there is a printer driver available for the MFC-665CW through Synaptic that can be accessed by searching on printer name. I got it, and it works great. I've not been successful in locating a driver for the scanner part of the MFC-665CW. Does anyone know if there is a driver available on Synaptic that will work for the scanner on a MFC-665CW, and if so how to get to it (i.e., what to search on to locate it)?

I have just purchased a brand new Brother printer MFC-250C which includes a fax/copier/scanner but mostly its for printing photos however Ubunto 10.4 does not recognize this model! (it works perfectly over on my other partition with windows7 using the setup disk for Brother). I have installed everything related to Brother from Synaptic and searched the Brother web site for any drivers relating to this model and have even tried installing from Synaptic MFC-240C drivers in case they may work (no 250c available in synaptic) selecting PRINT for instance in Fspot my printer receives information for the photo but does not commence printing ..the same applies working in Gimp Gutenprint.

This site has drivers for my new Brother HL-3040CN laser printer ... but it says its the wrong architecture when I try to open the first one with GDebi Package Installer. I'm kind of stuck now ...should I try just plugging the printer into the computer with the network cable and seeing if Ubuntu will automatically take care of drivers? For reference I saw this topic when I googled the issue [URL] This site says 64 bit drivers are available for Ubuntu 9.10, only 32 bit drivers are available for Ubuntu 10.04. I am running 10.04 (64bit) ... should I return the printer?

New 3040CN on 64-bit lucid. Test pages from console work fine. Cannot print using network or USB. Can http to printer on net, and system recognizes printer when USB attached. Downloaded and installed Brother's cups & driver files (despite being labeled as 64bit, they were i386) No 3040CN found in driver selection listings! system-config-printer thinks the driver should be for an Epson Stylus Photo 2200!
Tried various generic and foomatic PCL printers.
Tried attachment to lpd://10.10.10.20/binary_p1 and socket://10.10.10.20:9100. No results with lpd address, jobs are just lost. With socket address, get blank pages. Can't find an lpd file for this printer online.

I'm having trouble printing on my Brother MFC-8640D printer. I've tried both Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10, neither of which work reliably although a page will occasionally print. I can print just fine from my dual-booted Windows 7 installation. Thunderbird seems to always print OK, OpenOffice writer prints sometimes, other programs don't print at all or are inconsistent.

I had it printing until the last cups upgrade. Brother support thinks it is something to do with the upgrade. We did a reinstall of the printer driver. The printer works on Virtual Box and the scanner works on Ubuntu, but not the printer. What do I need to have the printer work under 11.04?

One of these problems is printing with my Brother DCP506CN printer which was working in Karmic. However, I just can't seem to get it going in Lucid. I have followed the Brother linux install procedure, which worked for the the last few Ubuntu releases, but not for this one it seems.

I just upgraded to 10.04 from 8.04. My Brother laser printer HL-CDW4070 no longer prints. The printer did survive a previous upgrade. Several other users have had this problem for other printers, but the fixes look to be brand specific. I hesitate to reinstall the LPR and CUPS without first knowing whether there's an easier fix. Error message from evince on a pdf file: Print Error There was a problem processing document'R Graphics Output' Retried with another file ... and it hung. Retried from xpdf and it queued behind the one that hung.
Maybe related:
- flash plugins were in a bad state. I followed advice from another post and got it fixed.
- synaptic shows hl4070cdwcups and hl4070cdwlpr both installed with the latest version which is 1.0.0-7 .... but they're listed as size 0 B (properties says size is N/A)
- I reinstalled cups-pdf which was missing/broken and restarted the computer but still no luck
- power cycled the printer, tried again.
