View 7 Replies View Related3 computers in the house run various windows based programs and everything is fine with them connecting to the internet as far as putting in the security password to log in and get online.My old back up computer that I use in the basement that has Ubuntu 9.10 was working fine with the secured network situation up until today.I booted up the computer this morning and it automatically connected as it typically does and I was reading some email and then the computer froze, which on rare occasions it does.
Upon reboot I got a window that asked for the password for the Network Manager Applet which I supplied and then it asked for the password for the secured internet connection which I supplied.It would not connect. After numerous tries of disabling the wireless and enabling the wireless and entering the Network Manager Applet password and the secured internet password I still get no connection.
I notice that when it is trying to connect, the window comes up on the screen that shows that there is reception from the modem, but there is also a little "lock" icon like I'm locked out of the connection.I finally found a way to get rid of the Network Manager Applet password problem but that still didn't alleviate the connection problem.
In the LiveCD there is an Icon. You can see it left of this pic.
This Icon is missing in a FULL INSTALL of openSuSE, how can I make it shown up.

I am relatively new at Linux and am having some problems with an install of openSUSE 11.2. I installed 11.2 on my Thinkpad X31 dual boot with WinXP. It seems to work very well except the network. I looked up swerdna's instructions on setting network cards up. I used YaST to try and set the system up as described in swerdna's instructions. Everything looks fine my network card and wireless card show up in the overview settings screen and everything sets up fine. But when I exit YaST the network doest show up no icon in the system tray and it doesn't even try to connect.
I did go into hardware to see if it was identifying my hardware and my network card shows up as "Thinkpad R40" and the wireless shows up as Cisco Aironet Wireless 802.11b. As far as I know this is correct. I have tried three other distro's and this one has gotten the closest to working so far.
I just installed openSUSE 10.3. Unfortunately after updates and reboot the system and disappeared from the taskbar network icon. Does anyone know how can I restore?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a 1Tb Western Digital Network drive. I was showing someone the photos on this on their XP computer and noticed that each file also had a capitalized version beside. I assumed this was a copying mistake and highlighted all the capitalized copies and deleted them. To my horror all files have vansihed. The next horror came in that XP apparently doesn't move deleted files to the recycle bin it just deletes them. I rapidly went back to my ubuntu machine and mounted the network drive. However none of my normal recovery file methods work on network drives. PhotoRec doesn't list the drive. and sudo ddrescue -r 3 ~/.gvfs/SFTP for [myname] on [address]/[path] ~/LOGFILE tells me permission is denied.

ifconfig eth0 does not work (it shows the wrong MAC address) since the HWADDR line from the file I mentioned above was erased. Also there is no ifcfg-eth0.bak backup configuration file.
I install ubuntu 10.04LTS yesterday, everything going fine. I install latest nvidia driver, listen music and connect internet. I use adsl modem.. and using

Install = sudo pppoeconf or sudo apt-get install pppoeconf
Connect = sudo pon dsl-provider
Disconnect = sudo poff
Everything going fine.. but when today I power on pc, the network icon gone. In network connection there is no eth0. but in ifconfig eth0 its shows: can access internet. How I get back my network icon and connect internet?

When i connect to my wired network, the icon correctly changes to the 2 "arrows" that show that the wired connection is active. But when i dissconnect the wired network, and i connect to my wireless one (or any wireless network), the icon has the "X" (not connected) mark, even thoug the network IS properly connected (i can access internet, local network, etc).

I've tried re-starting gnome - the recommended soluton - but not joy.
I have had a bit of experience with previous distros but I am pretty much a newbie. So I setup 10.04 but I can't get my net to connect. It's working fine on Win7 (posting from it). It's a dsl connection. I use an ethernet wire to connect to the net.
I opened terminal and used the 'sudo pppoeconf' command and followed the instructions. This is how I used to get my net working on previous distros but it dosen't seem to work in 10.04. The terminal says that my connection is active but it isn't. The network manager icon isn't visible on the top panel.
