My Network-Manager icon used to show as a diagonal line with a ball in the middle, now it shows as an Up-Arrow-next-to-a-Down-Arrow. Anybody know why the icon has changed? Is its appearance controllable by me--can I change it back to the old icon display?

Some time ago I asked about SCPM in 11.3. Turns out it was removed, and the suggestion is made to use Network Manager.
Some of us are not excited about this, because despite the name Network Manager did not manage networks - it managed connections. Those of us who presently use SCPM to choose which NFS fstab entries, which printer, etc
When changing connections want to know whether indeed Network Manager can indeed now manage networks instead of just connections.
Before the update my computer was named "joe-laptop", (i think it was the host name is what its called, that was named "joe-laptop". Along with that, on my KDE session/desktop (I installed Ubuntu, but later got the kubuntu desktop packages) I had the gnomes network manager used instead of KDEs (kdes network manager was giving me problems, I would type the password in for my wifi router, then it would stall, then ask again as if its ignoring the password. but thats not important so im not gonna get into that whole part (at least yet)).
When i upgraded from ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 the login screen said "localhost.localdomain" rather than "joe-laptop", and in the terminal it says "joe@localhost", rather than "joe@joe-laptop", along with that it kicked KDEs network manager back into use on the kde desktop, which means I can't access the internet on kde now.
I'm trying to fix the network manager part myself, but if I can't get that Ill post in this thread or edit this post. I was able to previously get gnomes network manager to load over it so I'm sure I'll hit it again.
I figured out the problem, it turns out that the name problem was that it deleted the /etc/hosts file, so i just copied the older hosts I backed up a month or so ago and slapped it in there and it worked perfect.
As for getting the gnome network manager, it must not be compatible with the qtcurve gtk theme, cause I switched it the gtk theme to a newer one, then loaded back up nm-applet and bam it came up there!
I am using Ubuntu 9.10 32bit. I removed the network icon from my panel & I would like it back now. How can I icon back? I use the icon for my wifi networks.

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx 32 bit version alongside my Windows OS.I wanted to enable my DHCP configuration in my modem.So I did what was to be done from Windows and when I switched to Linux, I found DHCP enabled connection not working in Linux and also the network manager icon had vanished from the systray.I have now switched off DHCP and wanted to revert back to my original settings but still no network manager icon is there.

I don't know how it's gone but I've had no success in making it re-appear. Is there something that I could put into a terminal (i.e. a magic spell!) that would make it re-appear.

I've tried re-starting gnome - the recommended soluton - but not joy.
I have had a bit of experience with previous distros but I am pretty much a newbie. So I setup 10.04 but I can't get my net to connect. It's working fine on Win7 (posting from it). It's a dsl connection. I use an ethernet wire to connect to the net.
I opened terminal and used the 'sudo pppoeconf' command and followed the instructions. This is how I used to get my net working on previous distros but it dosen't seem to work in 10.04. The terminal says that my connection is active but it isn't. The network manager icon isn't visible on the top panel.

After a recent dist-upgrade I have lost my network.There is no Network manager icon in the top corner.My switch and the RJ45 port on the PC are both lit green and connected. There is an internet connection from the other PC on the LAN.I am now able to ping the other PC on the LAN but still no internet!My router is at 192.168.0.1 so I have also tried:sudo route add default gw 192.168.0.1.

Im using "alt+f2" the nm-applet to get the NM work but removes after reboot, so i have to do this all time.. uhm, when trying to enable desktop effects is sats "searching for available drivers" and then "Desktop effects could not be enabled". When trying to install apps from Software center, neither of the apps installs, the button install just keep refreshing, but if i go terminal: sudo software-center im able to install everything.

As I was having problems with login in, I kept trying to login in to the normal desktop but Ubuntu kept thinking about it for approximetly ten seconds and then asking me to login in again repeatedly. however when i switch to guest user on the guest desktop the network manager icon appears. I have used this icon to enter a mobile broadband account and to connect up to and down load all updates surf etc.Read a number posts and find this problem with the network manager icon are quite common. View 7 Replies View RelatedUsing Ubuntu 10.04 (2.6.32-31)on a Dell studio today.Update manager offered four updates, one about networking. I accepted. After restart the Network-Manager icon had vanished from the tool bar and was replaced by a second loudspeaker control icon. No ability to link to the internet. Starting Network-Manager from the pull-down menus did not help.Muggins Noob thought, un/re-install Network Manager. Duh! Uninstall is fine, but re-installing from the web without Network-Manager, tricky. Sadly no ethernet wire available, either wifi or GSM/3G.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have been using ubuntu 10.04 LTS for the last 5 months, used tata photon plus for networking. Everything went fine when couple of days ago, after doing normal updates as listed by the update manager, sound went off.. to solve this, I had to remove and reinstall certain packages as listed in [URL] ...+documentation, I had to restart, after restarting, the sound problem was gone but the network manager icon went off, the modem was not getting power from the computer though the LAN wire was connected. To add to dismay, the mobile broadband connections that I had added to the network manager were gone. I tried adding the tata photon plus (huwaein) again but could not be added, reinstalled usb-mode switch data and related packages, but still the computer does not detect the photon as usb device. I have broadband dsl connection and tata photon plus too but cant use any of them.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI haven't got Lubuntu as such, I've installed LXDE to try it out with Ubuntu 11.04 sometimes. For it to be practical for me I need the battery icon and Network Manager on the panel. I'm assuming this can be done easily enough as Linux Mint LXDE has got it, or Network Manager at least. i need NM to easily start my Mobile Broadband dongle's connection.Also, can touchpad tapping be turned off in LXDE, and how? I have it set up to have no tapping in regular Ubuntu but this is undone when I boot LXDE.

I added the icon back on the panel, but I don't think its the right one. It doesn't do the two green cicles thing when I connect my ethernet wire in. It also doesn't show any wireless AP when I left click on the icon. It doesn't even have an X mark on the bottom left of the icon when no network is detected
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy family uses a computer running Ubuntu 10.04. We each have a separate login. This computer connects to the internet via wifi.
A behaviour which I have noticed is as follows - the first user to log in gets the network manager applet icon. So they can control the network connection. Any other user that subsequently logs in does not.
Now this is a real pain in the butt as sometimes our wifi connection drops and I might have left my wife logged in and used the 'switch user' function to get access to my login. The only way I can access the applet is by switching back to her login.
Is there any way to make this appear in everyone's login's at the same time?

Some hours later, I had to force the computer to shut down by pressing the power button, since it got totally lagged when I started it after an automatic sleep due to no power left. I started it, logged in and saw that the network manager was unmanaged. I got that message when I clicked the icon at the right-bottom bar.
So, I tried with "ifconfig" in a Terminal, as root.Therefor, I did "sudo ifconfig eth1 up", and the same with eth0. The network manager did not work anyways. I killed it using "sudo killall -9 knetworkmanager" and started it with "knetworkmanager" from the Terminal. The icon got removed and it appeared again, but nothing changed - it said "network manager disables", as before.I logged off and select "Restart X server" from the login screen. I logged in again and tried. Didn't work. When I restarted my computer I saw that eth0 and eth1 was down again. I took them up and then I checked the hardware settings. I saw that I could use either KNetworkManager, Fake Net or Wicd. I tried to locate if I had Wicd or Fake Net installed, but I hadn't.
Neither the wireless or the wired connection works now. I'd like to know how to fix the Network Manager, or whatever is wrong. Also, I'd like to know if I can install Wicd using a CD or something. Maybe Wicd works better, I have no idea. I'm using Kubuntu 10.04, the final release.
I recently installed fedora 15 on my computer but I have a huge problem. I can connect to my router wirelessly for a couple of minutes only. Afterwards my computer has no Internet connection although the network manager and the icon on the upper bar says that i am still connected. I tried editing the /etc/rc.local and /etc/resolv.conf as mentioned in other posts in here bit no luck so far.

So I tried it out and everything went fine.I switched back to the Desktop environment and noticed that the widget on my desktop, which normally shows the items of my desktop folder,changed into an icon I have to click first before I can see the content.I rather have it as if was when I installed Kubuntu.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI switched on my machine this evening and the first thing I noticed was the home icon in the unity launcher has changed, then I noted then I noted that the window switcher icon, power-off icon and me icon in top right are also different.
On starting nautilus (clicking on home icon) it looks more like thunar (although about says its not). A screen shot showing "nautilus-thunar" and the desktop is attached.
Firefox's minimize, maximize and close icons have also changed - see other screen shot.
Anyone got any idea what's going on? Anyone else have this.
F12 completely patched. Can someone provide some insight into the various volume controls available and why they seem to conflict with each other? The incognito application that loads up on the task bar as a speaker icon keeps getting changed. I try to nail it at 100% but it keeps getting altered - how I don't know. BTW - I say its an incognito application as there is no way to identify what piece of software it actually represents. I assume it's the gnome-volume-control-applet, but there is no way to know for sure as it is devoid of any identification. I run rhythmbox and its volume control also gets altered from where I attempt to set it.
I assume that gnome-volume-control-applet is the master to set a limit on what anything else can do. I then assume that rhythmbos's volume control operates within the envelope that gnome-volume-control-applet allows. Both assumptions are probably wrong as nothing makes any sense. Maybe all the pulseaudio stuff is also in there somewhere messing with the controls, but I see no user space apps to influence pulseaudio. To top it off, I can push the volume control on rhythmbox around from 100% down to 16% and there is no discernible change in volume. When I hit 14% there is a halving of volume, and from there on down to 0% seems to function linearly as expected. Why is there this non responsive range between 16% and 100%?
I've been using Linux for about 15 yrs.. and this is driving me crazy.My daughter often plays on my linux box - a kinda-fresh f12 install.. running gnome.SO one day I go on my computer and my icons on my desktop are as if she changed my display to 800x600 - since the icons are so huge - but web browsing & once i open an application the sizing is fine.Wondering what she may have done to make my icons so huge.i can't seem to figure out any settings for this - she was messing with accessibility options since she had some software keyboard coming up at login too

Not only did it not fix it, but now I cannot connect to any network, wired or wireless. I tried to open the default network manager and it said "Network management disabled". How do I re-enable it?I also have set YAST settings back to their originals with no luck.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI just stupidly changed my graphics resolution in System - Preferences - Startup Manager, now i dont get a login window or anything just a black screen. I also disabled the splash but i assume this just gets rid of the ubuntu loading line thingy?
The weird thing is that the resolution was set to 640x800 or something like that in the Startup Manager as default and the laptom im using (an old Toshiba Amilo P4) supports 1024x768. the System - Preferences - Display menu wouldnt let me change any display settings which is why i was messing about here. I havent got any backed up x org file and only a live usb of super os/ubuntu - no cd or floppy drive.
