Sep 29, 2010New to ubuntu. I love the OS. Everything works great except for the network connection. It tells me I need to activate the b43 drivers with fwcutter, but here are the following problems:
1) I can't download and install the drivers b/c I can't connect to the internet wired or wireless.
2) I can't find the website to download the appropriate drivers (I've looked for hours)
3)I'm not too sure how to install them since I don't have a background in coding.
I really like ubuntu, I just need network working.

Mar 10, 2011My Network manager is missing (it is usually has a short-cut on the desktop-bar, which are monitor pictures, next to the sound short-cut). Does anybody know how to activate it again (terminal-based command or etc)? See my attachment, i made a circle sign on the missing network-manager.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Network Icon Shows "lock" Icon When Trying To Connect
May 16, 20103 computers in the house run various windows based programs and everything is fine with them connecting to the internet as far as putting in the security password to log in and get online.My old back up computer that I use in the basement that has Ubuntu 9.10 was working fine with the secured network situation up until today.I booted up the computer this morning and it automatically connected as it typically does and I was reading some email and then the computer froze, which on rare occasions it does.
Upon reboot I got a window that asked for the password for the Network Manager Applet which I supplied and then it asked for the password for the secured internet connection which I supplied.It would not connect. After numerous tries of disabling the wireless and enabling the wireless and entering the Network Manager Applet password and the secured internet password I still get no connection.
I notice that when it is trying to connect, the window comes up on the screen that shows that there is reception from the modem, but there is also a little "lock" icon like I'm locked out of the connection.I finally found a way to get rid of the Network Manager Applet password problem but that still didn't alleviate the connection problem.
Fedora Networking :: Cannot Activate Via System-config-network?
May 28, 2009I've been running F10 since it first came out, and I was happy to see it was the first Fedora release that automatically recognized my Atheros wireless card. I have to run system-config-network and press the "activate" button when I start the machine, but that's ok and no big deal. But today, for whatever reason,in system-config-network, the "activate" and "deactivate" buttons are grayed out and I cannot start the device so I have no network access. When I boot the machine into Windows, it works fine.

Mar 7, 2009I have downloaded and installed Fedora 10.Now I am setting up the network and in the 'network configuration' it finds the wireless device (ralink) in the 'hardware' section of the configuration - I set this to eth0 (it originally set itself to wan0 and I still had the same problems, now it doesn't give me the option to put it back to wan0).Now I goto the devices tab and try to set up the device with eth0 - which it seems to find.But when I goto activate the device it tells me that eth0 cannot be found

Oct 21, 2010After a recent dist-upgrade I have lost my network.There is no Network manager icon in the top corner.My switch and the RJ45 port on the PC are both lit green and connected. There is an internet connection from the other PC on the LAN.I am now able to ping the other PC on the LAN but still no internet!My router is at 192.168.0.1 so I have also tried:sudo route add default gw 192.168.0.1.

May 27, 2011Using Ubuntu 10.04 (2.6.32-31)on a Dell studio today.Update manager offered four updates, one about networking. I accepted. After restart the Network-Manager icon had vanished from the tool bar and was replaced by a second loudspeaker control icon. No ability to link to the internet. Starting Network-Manager from the pull-down menus did not help.Muggins Noob thought, un/re-install Network Manager. Duh! Uninstall is fine, but re-installing from the web without Network-Manager, tricky. Sadly no ethernet wire available, either wifi or GSM/3G.

Jan 23, 2011I was browsing the net very well and without any issues for the past 15 days since I installed FC14. Fantastic experience and then suddenly yesterday after nearly 2 hours of a smooth online session I lost internet connectiivity.At that point I noticed that the network icon on top was showing a red cross. After clicking on it I could NOT eth0. I specifically remember seeing it there before.I checked the cables and the setting to no avail and just could not get it back. Any idea what I should be doing to see eth0 in the connection?Also FYI I have been noticing this from day one since I installed FC14----When going through administration-->network-->One cannot see the red and GREEN activate button that I am used to seeing in FC9. In fc14 its greyed out. So I actually had to go and enter the /etc/init.d/network start command to change the status from inactivate to activate.Also the network manager does not seem to be managing eth01 as it does not appear as an entry in its console.

Dec 28, 2010The problem I'm having is on a CentOS4 machine. I don't use CentOS regularly (Ubuntu and Mint, yes) so I'm not sure if this is something that is particular to CentOS or not. I have this workstation that controls a microscope controller. The drives in this computer are some POS Seagate drives where the data storage drive has already conked out more than once. I think this time there was a problem with the OS drive that caused a lot of filesystem errors. I wasn't able to boot the OS at first but I ran fsck from a liveCD and was able to fix the (hundreds of) errors and the OS can now boot from the drive. The problem ave now is the ethernet does not work. I know there's not a problem with the ethernet controllers because I can access the internet through the liveCD. When I try to activate eth0, or eth1, I get the following error:Quote:

Nov 8, 2010Have a strange problem with the network icon on my laptop.
I have two users (me & my wife). We often log in and use switch users so we're both logged in at the same time.
Whoever logs in first will get the network manager icon in the top panel, and whoever logs in second won't get the icon.
The second user does get a message (growl notification?) saying the wireless network <whatever> is now connected & it is indeed connected.
It's a bit annoying, as if I log in second, I can't chnage my wireless network to the other one we have, I'm stuck using whichever one my wife selected.

May 24, 2011I have been using ubuntu 10.04 LTS for the last 5 months, used tata photon plus for networking. Everything went fine when couple of days ago, after doing normal updates as listed by the update manager, sound went off.. to solve this, I had to remove and reinstall certain packages as listed in [URL] ...+documentation, I had to restart, after restarting, the sound problem was gone but the network manager icon went off, the modem was not getting power from the computer though the LAN wire was connected. To add to dismay, the mobile broadband connections that I had added to the network manager were gone. I tried adding the tata photon plus (huwaein) again but could not be added, reinstalled usb-mode switch data and related packages, but still the computer does not detect the photon as usb device. I have broadband dsl connection and tata photon plus too but cant use any of them.

May 8, 2010language-pack-en, language-pack-en-base, language-pack-kde-en, language-pack-kde-en-base, libsoup2.4-1, libsoup-gnome2.4-1, pm-utils today on my laptop. Some hours later, I had to force the computer to shut down by pressing the power button, since it got totally lagged when I started it after an automatic sleep due to no power left. I started it, logged in and saw that the network manager was unmanaged. I got that message when I clicked the icon at the right-bottom bar.
So, I tried with "ifconfig" in a Terminal, as root.Therefor, I did "sudo ifconfig eth1 up", and the same with eth0. The network manager did not work anyways. I killed it using "sudo killall -9 knetworkmanager" and started it with "knetworkmanager" from the Terminal. The icon got removed and it appeared again, but nothing changed - it said "network manager disables", as before.I logged off and select "Restart X server" from the login screen. I logged in again and tried. Didn't work. When I restarted my computer I saw that eth0 and eth1 was down again. I took them up and then I checked the hardware settings. I saw that I could use either KNetworkManager, Fake Net or Wicd. I tried to locate if I had Wicd or Fake Net installed, but I hadn't.
Neither the wireless or the wired connection works now. I'd like to know how to fix the Network Manager, or whatever is wrong. Also, I'd like to know if I can install Wicd using a CD or something. Maybe Wicd works better, I have no idea. I'm using Kubuntu 10.04, the final release.
