I just restarted my computer, tried to login and all i see is the blue Kubuntu wallpaper, the desktop items never load, i can run terminal by pressing ctrl+alt+f2 however? This happened before and i just reinstalled the kde, but i really need to find out why this keeps happening.

I was force to ctrl+alt+F1 to switch to init 1 to do my work. But I still want to use my graphical desktop either KDE or Gnome is ok. I am using gnome.
View 5 Replies View RelatedAfter installing gnome-color-chooser for Ubuntu 10.10, I followed all the steps to enable transparent gnome menu. When I logged out and logged back into my user, the gnome panel menu was transparent as It should be however, the desktop background changed color and I cannot change the desktop by right clicking the desktop. If I do right click and try to, the entire desktop and all programs freeze. The mouse works but that is it. Whenever I try to open gnome-color-chooser, I get this error message : ERROR Could not open or create file /home/User/.gtkrc-2.0-gnome-color-chooser. I have uninstalled and reinstalled both gnome color chooser and gnome panel with no luck.

Up until KDE4 I could select a different image for each of the 4 virtual desktops. Now I tried Suse11.1 KDE and it seems like there is no such option. I can change the background image allright, but all 4 desktops have the SAME image.

I also notice that when I run a program that installs anything that screen dims (gets like this grey opacity I guess) after a period of time. I proceeded to right click on the background and change it back while logged in. After a 2nd reboot I could see it changed it for my userid, but I still get that wrong background during the login prompt. How can I change it back for there?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just installed xubuntu natty, and the gdm theme (xubuntu-gdm-theme) has somehow reverted to something ugly. The background is black instead of showing xubuntu-greybird.png, the panel bar is light gray, and the shutdown button is now gray instead of a red/orange power icon.
The problem appeared while I was tweaking my account settings, possibly when I used the users-admin tool, but I'm not sure.
I tried purging and reinstalling the following packages:
gdm
xubuntu-gdm-theme
xubuntu-artwork
xubuntu-default-settings
xubuntu-desktop
...but that didn't help.
For comparison, I'm attaching screen shots of my (broken) gdm screen and a correct one from a virtual machine. (Try to ignore the fact that they're different screen resolutions.)

After changing it, I restarted my computer, typed in my username/password and it just brought me to an image of my background with no icons or the sidebar. When I press Ctrl+Alt+F1 it brings me to a command prompt. Also, after the log in I get an error displaying Enter password to unlock your login keyring. After entering my password nothing happens.

I wanted to use a regularly- and frequently-updating weather map as my desktop background (extreme desktop tweakers can stop reading here: yes, I'm committing the unspeakable act of using a 640x480 image as the background for my 1280x1024 desktop. What can I say? I'm a pragmatic kinda guy . . .). I came up with the following solution for doing this, but wanted to post here to see if someone else might suggest something more elegant and/or superior.
First, I created an extremely simplistic bash script that downloads the weather map image (640x480 a gif) and writes it to a file in my home directory called wmap-bkgrnd.gif. It's only two lines, as follows code...
So now cron downloads the image every 10 minutes and writes it to the wmap-bkgrnd.gif file in my user's home directory. Finally, I right-clicked on the gnome desktop and selected "change background," selecting that image as my desktop background.
It works, and gives the desired effect. I now have a weather map that updates every 10 minutes as my desktop background.
So, my questions. Is there a simpler/better way to accomplish this task? I have to say I have nothing against higher-resolution images and would use one if I could find something suitable. But so far, in the way of frequently-updated maps, I've only been able to find this low-resolution one.

View 3 Replies View RelatedThis is so bizarre I'm not even sure what to search google for. When I log in, the GDM background stays on one of my screens. It appears, however, that Gnome and my applications are running properly on that screen - as I move the mouse around, the pointer changes just as I would expect. The GDM root window is simply covering everything. I've tried logging out/in and rebooting, but that hasn't helped. I assume that if I simply kill the GDM processes that my session will exit. This seems to have started since I last installed updates (that's why I rebooted the first time earlier today).
