Up until KDE4 I could select a different image for each of the 4 virtual desktops. Now I tried Suse11.1 KDE and it seems like there is no such option. I can change the background image allright, but all 4 desktops have the SAME image.
View 4 RepliesI have tried to install Opensuse 11.2 (Gnome-Live) and run it as my main OS.When i rebooted after install it would go to login and the desktop wallpaper would come up and that was it. Nothing else loaded, no panels, icons, just the green background.Any suggestions to fix this at all? Right now I am under XP, but would rather use Opensuse.My hardware consists of the following:Dell sx2601 gb Ram20 gb HDintel 82845g graphics.The actual live-cd ran perfectly.

The setting was for "Desktop Activity Type and I selected "Plain Desktop no Toolbar" When that was applied, suddenly the desktop icons got very small and I tried to set them larger again but that did not work, the settings for Desktop icons from "Configure Desktop" were only applied in the Plasma Dashboard, not the desktop itself

1) during boot process its staing: "Failed services in runlevel 5" and "waring GdmDisplay: display lasted 2.1317348 seconds" and " GdmLocalDisplayFactory: maximun number of X display failure reached.
2) /var/log/Xorg.n.log files (n=1-5) "AddScreen/ScreenInit failed for driver 0"
Installed Suse 11.2 from download CD. During the "answering questions" at the beginning of the process, selected Gnome as the desktop enviornment instead of the default KDE. The install process ended with no reported errors. After the final reboot at the process's end, the Gnome logon screen was displayed. After the user name/password were entered, a medium green screen was displayed, but the Gnome desktop was never displayed. The "animal" logo was not on the screen just the green screen and some "filagree" lines, probably part of the logo.
Waited a few minutes, mouse-clocked, pressed various keys and then tried ctrl-alt-del, but no response. Did a power off/on reboot, but the results were the same.
I then did a re-install. Took the KDE default for desktop. At install's end, the KDE desktop appeared and everything works just fine. During this second install, all choices were the same as for the first/Gnome install. Worked from written notes, and not from memory, so am sure that the change to KDE was the only difference.
Couldn't find any information on this anomally via forum and Google searches, hence this post.
This is my first time to use Suse, so could well have "missed something".
How do I get it to display a different desktop background for each desktop? I'm sure I saw this option somewhere, but I can't find it again.
Secondly, it defaults with 4 desktops in a 2X2 grid layout. I changed it to 2, then back to 4 and now it has 4 desktops in a linear layout (1x4). How can I change it back to 2X2?
Have accidently removed a desktop background image (lotus/pond) and would very much like to have it back. Would someone please tell me how to do this? I've read in Help that this image is not removed from my computer but don't know how to proceed.
View 3 Replies View RelatedAnybody knows how can I mount and unmount a floppy within the desktop and/or dolphin filemanager in KDE 4.1? If I run dolphin I can see a floppy icon on the left, clicking on it seems to activate a reading of the floppy, then I have to go to /media folder and click on /disk folder to display the floppy files, then if a right click on the floppy on dolphin the only option I get is to hide the floppy shortcut, there is no option for unmount the floppy. I tried to make a desktop shortcut to floppy by right clicking on the desktop folder and selecting new device floppy and entering /dev/fd0 on device location, and clicking okay. Even that does not have the unmount command when I right click on the desktop shortcut, so the floppy gets stock in mount state.
also I dont see an applet or the so called plasmanoid when I click on the plasma icon on the right of the task bar and click add widget, on kde 3.5 I have the media applet on the task bar, it worked like a charm, I give a 1000 thanks to the developer of the media applet.
Any ideas on how to mount and unmount my floppy? It is a standard internal floppy, which is connected to the standard floppy controller on the motherboard. The only way to have access to it is logging into kde 3.5 and have the media applet/widget in the taskbar, and then works like a charm, I can mount it or unmount it any time. But I would like to try the new Version 4.1.3 (KDE 4.1.3) "release 72.4" that I'm running. I believe this is the latest from the opensuse 11.1 KDE 4 STABLE repository, so I know I have the latest patches for KDE 4.
I have installled ubuntu 9.04 and windows XP. After rebooting the system the desktop background image which i saved earlier is not showing up in Ubuntu.

After the install, I found that the monitor always reverts to 87hz refresh rate and must be manually adjusted to 60hz. Also, there is no adjustment for the monitor resolution beyond 1024 x 768. I can not find the video card info in yast like it was before. Do I need to add the ati sources in yast? Will that give me a way to adjust the video card properties? Video card is the ati rage. Box is a dell optiplex pentium 3.
View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter installing gnome-color-chooser for Ubuntu 10.10, I followed all the steps to enable transparent gnome menu. When I logged out and logged back into my user, the gnome panel menu was transparent as It should be however, the desktop background changed color and I cannot change the desktop by right clicking the desktop. If I do right click and try to, the entire desktop and all programs freeze. The mouse works but that is it. Whenever I try to open gnome-color-chooser, I get this error message : ERROR Could not open or create file /home/User/.gtkrc-2.0-gnome-color-chooser. I have uninstalled and reinstalled both gnome color chooser and gnome panel with no luck.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've had this problem for a long time (since I first installed 11.2) but I hoped KDE SC 4.4 would fix it for me. Since it didn't, I decided to make a thread about it. I have a really weird problem ─ I can only set svg graphics as desktop backgrounds. I can't put any kind of png/jpg (haven't tried others) picture as a wallpaper. All I get is a black background. The weather backgrounds etc. work perfectly fine. I can create a svgz file in Inkscape and insert a png image in it but that's kind of a stupid workaround for a problem. Has anyone encountered a problem like this?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI installed OpenSUSE 11.2-KDE about 2 weeks ago, and have been pretty satisfied with it so far.Apart from one niggling little problem.When I went to the 'Password and User Account' page (Configure Desktop>About Me) and tried to change from the default image to something more personal, I got a message box saying "Your administrator has disallowed changing your image." However, on the same page I was allowed to enter personal details and could, if I wished, have changed my password.I logged in as root to see if I could change it from there, but I got the same message. As this is a single-user machine, where I am effectively root/administrator, it would appear I am banning myself from changing my image. So far, I've been allowed to change anything else.

View 8 Replies View RelatedIt has been about a month since I installed openSUSE 11.3 (64bit, Gnome), and overall it is better than 11.2, but I have had some stability issues that I did not have with 11.2.
1. openSUSE 11.3 crashes very often when I change desktop background. I haven't experiment with it but it happens with downloaded images.
2. Changing monitor environment makes openSUSE to freeze. Fresh boot with external monitors connected usually works, but plugging & unplugging monitors usually makes openSUSE freezing. (I have to force power down)
3. Suspend makes openSUSE freeze a lot. Usually one suspension works, if I re-suspend it, it usually freezes.
I was wondering if these are common with 11.3 or I'm the only one who is having this.
Is there a way in SuSE 11.1 to have the conventional desktop, instead the plasma desktop? I thought that installing KDE 3.5 will fix it, but I was wrong. I really don't want to download back SuSE 11.0, just to have my old desktop layout. SuSE developers should at least leave it as an option than to force people to install it

No firewalls, local connection only. I've looked at VNC, RDP with xrdp, have not been able to establish a session to desktop. I would rather not use desktop sharing if possible, don't want invitations involved. Want something similar to hitting from Windows with VNC3and taking over the established desktop session. View 5 Replies View RelatedI am a new user, and installed opensuse 11.3 on my desktop pc about a week ago, now the problem with my computer is this that the graphical performance is very slow, I have Intel Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz processor, with 512 mb ram plus a shared graphic card memory of 32 mb on an IBM thinkcentre. The default graphic driver loaded (as seen through YASt hardware information) is i915 while I read somewhere that default driver for this accelerator is intel. I get about 60 FPS on Glx gears while after applying vesa it goes to about 200 FPS. With default driver the CPU usage is head aching. I created a manual xorg.conf file via Xorg -configure command and set the driver intel and then intellegacy with gaining no boost in performance. The glxinfo says 3D Rendering being enabled while KWIN's desktop effects are too slow and laggy. The CPU keeps working at about 70-100% while movies on ..... and vlc/kaffeine are being played unsmoothly. On the same system, the Kubuntu Live 8.04 gives 500 FPS in glxgears.

It would be nice to know if i file i opened had a nasty virus in it like the way it does in windows. I first came to think of this since the new opera browser has built in protection from avg. Ive tried opera but still prefer firefox with all the addons like noscript and adblockplus etc.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been reading up around the internet that although it is possible to use MSTSC.exe under Windows XP to connect back to a Suse machine running XRDP (I believe).I had been working fine with Suse 11.0 until today. I had not made any changes to my local network but now whenever I try to connect in, I am told that I can not start the session as the sesman logon fails!
I tail'ed /var/log/messages but there is nothing written to that log when I try (interestingly enough, I do get the logon prompt that requests username, password and session type - I usually select KDE3 but have tried all options - and get the error after clicking OK).
My questions:-
1. Is XRDP under 11.1 any better (more stable as when it worked, I use to get kicked out a lot under 11.0)
2. What log file should I be trying to tail so I can see what is happening?
I must use Linux as the back end, I don't want to use a hacked copy of XP anymore and don't want to pay �� for a real version when Linux is free and should by now be able to grant me access to my network from a remote location!VNC is not an option as I will be wanting to log on more than one user at the same time.
I am really a noob using Suse or any linux configuration. I have to work in a computer that uses Suse 10.3 from another computer that uses Windows.What I am looking for is for some programe that works most similarly to windows remote desktop or logmein. After ar reboot, no more desktop. Then I did init 3 adn startx ( it seems although I have no desktop, I am in runlevel 5)

After something happened in SUSE Studio, in any appliances I build the owner of /home/tux/Desktop is root which makes impossible to create desktop icons. This happens even in those appliances which previously were build normally with normal ownership (i.e. tux as owner of /home/tux/Desktop). Something changed abruptly and in all these appliances the ownership of this folder changed.
