General :: Different Background For Each New Terminal?

I'm currently using Ubuntu 10.10. I frequently end up opening a few terminals and it's easier to keep track of what I'm doing if the terminals have different backgrounds or are colored differently. Is there a way already made which will start up a new terminal with a background different then one that's already open? Or a way that when the terminal is opened it will start the terminal under a profile that's not yet open? That being, when I open a terminal it opens the "first" profile. Then once I try opening a new terminal it checks and finds that I already have one with the "first" profile open and so the new terminal is opened with the "second" profile.Does anything like this feature already exist? Or something like it?
If this is documented (I'm sure it is) I can't find it.Being a really OLD UNIX user (35-tty days) I don't like GUI and leave it at RL 3. The background is wallpapered with an undesired image. can't remember where to get rid of it. I have done it B4 but I've slept since then
All I want to do is make the background for Mac OS X's Terminal Black so that I can run a Perl script with Terminal and have the background black for that.How would I do this for Mac OS X?How would I do this for an average Linux?
How do you get a background image in the terminal in Lucid Lynx, the tutorials I've found is for older releases. And something have changed because I can't find that option anywere.
I would like to set a permanent, transparentmmovable terminal over my desktop background. I've tried various out-of-date guides to doing this, but all of them left me with a border around my window (I think Emerald caused this)letely mobile terminals. I set my terminal's colour scheme to a black background with white letters. Everything works great, except man pages. When I read a man page, the titles look black, so they are unreadable on the black background. The paragraph text looks fine, it's the headers (and anything that is *bold* I think) that looks wrong.
Ive got my webserver linked up to my ubuntu computer, and i want it to act like a server controller (for srcds games or w/e) Basically, When i click the start button, the SSH launches 'css.sh' by doing this 'sh css.sh'... Anyway, the .sh file has this inside it cd sourceds/srcds_1/orangebox clear ./srcds_run -console -game cstrike +map de_dust -maxplayers 16 -autoupdate
But either way, that is becides the point. When it launches i dont see the terminal window, its invisible.... (but its running) How do i see it when i go to my ubuntu desktop and how to i put more commands in it once its launched in the background.
I've just entered the world of linux and the first thing that I find is the terminal. Can anyone teach me how to change the background and text colors in terminal
it's really easy to launch an application using alt+f2 without having to worry about it while it's running but in terminal the window must remain open and you can't run anything else while the application is running e.g. firefox, rhythmbox. does anyone know how to run applications in the background while using terminal?
I am running Ubuntu 10.10, and I am trying to run a java process in the background of a terminal, so I can continue to use that terminal.
Other applications will run in the background just fine, but when I run my java application, I cannot change the status of the process from "Stopped" after suspending it.

Does anyone know how to set the background of a terminal to be an image, and not have it slightly transparent? I've set an image as my Terminal background, but now when I open a terminal over other applications I can see those applications through my Terminal background. Is there any way to stop this from happening?
When I type (in new 10.10) soem cmdline comands like "ls -l" then some of the directories have a different fore-and background color (e.g. black on green) while the remaining other directoreis are blue on white.
Where can I find out the meaning of the diferent colors and how can I change them?
If I go to menu
Terminal->Edit->Profile Preferences->Color
then I can set only the full overall background and foreground color. But here only certain parts have a different color. the main color (black on white) is suitable. I do not use system theme.
I'd like to change the default transparency level for the gnome-terminal.The gnome-terminal has this setting in: Edit --> Profile preferences --> Background tab, called "Use background settings from system theme". Indeed, I can simply uncheck this setting and manually adjust, but then my changes would apply to all themes, if I were to change my theme in the future.How can I edit the transparency of the GTK theme itself so that it applies to gnome-terminal?I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 with the "Ambiance" theme, and I'm seeing these files which are probably relevant. Am I on the right track? (those files don't contain anything obvious like "transparency" or "opacity" to change ... so I"m not exactly sure what/where to change)
Why does on some computers my terminal window have a background I can see through and on others its a solid color? I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed on 4 machines as base OS and I have many virtual machines of it also. I havent changed the terminal preferences on any of them, however on some computers the terminal background which is purple is not solid in that you can see what is in the background behind it. On others the background is truly solid purple; you can not see behind/through it.
Is there any way to change the terminal window for these machines that are displaying solid to the 'see-thru' way? Ive been using some ebooks and things and really like opening up vi/vim in the purple see-thru window that allows me to write and see the text in the background...however on some machines I can not do this because the terminal display is truly solid. ? All my computers have the same profile settings for terminal..

Note - I am making a distinction here between what I call see-thru and the 'transparent' setting in the terminal preferences as this seems to use the desktop background and is different from what I am talking here.
i have installed Ubuntu 10.10 and played around a bit and have got it booting into cli instead of the login screen. gnome is my default desktop environment but i wish to run kde along side to play around with. When i boot into kde using startx kde (usualy just using startx) all i get is a mouse, black background and a terminal screen.
Anyone know why each time I boot up the machine the cube background image goes away and the background colour is left. This image i am placing is in Apparency/Skydome

I have a favorite REXX program called fv2. When I was a Windows user I had an icon for fv2 on the Quick Launch bar. Click that icon, and the program ran. Now, as a Linux (Ubuntu) user it is necessary to go through several steps to run fv2.
1) Launch a terminal by clicking on the terminal icon at the top of the screen. What's that area called? The GNOME panel? 2) Enter: ~/Desktop/RexxScripts 3) Enter: regina fv2

How can I make terminal applications immune to terminal emulator close, but still able to use all virtual terminal features?

I have figured out that everything looks fine if I compile rxvt-unicode with USE=-xterm-color (in fact vim looks like on the second picture even without screen if I add this USE flag) and set TERM=screen-256color, but I do not like this workaround because it actually changes colors and I can't be sure that it will always change them only this way:
Right now when I start a program from a terminal I can't use that terminal instance again until I close the program.
I am a new user of linux, and I want to know if there is a way to execute a program/application from a terminal without blocking the terminal until the program ends.
I originally have Ubuntu Lucid on my machine. I just installed opensuse 11.2 on another partition without bootloader installed. So I'm still using the Ubuntu Lucid default bootloader grub2. I can boot up opensuse correctly. the nagging thing is that there's no splash screen show up during the boot process, instead, lines of command are flashing, the console background is also missing and the font under console (tty1-6) is huge. what can I do to have these back to opensuse? the current entry in grub2 for opensuse

I have spent the most part of 5 hours trying to fix this issue. For some reason I cannot change the background image to any of mt .jpg wallpaper files (and .png files). I've tried using the Ubuntu-Tweak application, but I end up getting a purple screen (default) or a black screen (default). So then I tried using the terminal method by making the Appearance window appear when I would log out. That works, except when I go to use my background image, it shows as a question mark for the image preview, and the icon for the file is a gray box. All while doing this my background images that I tested are all in the /usr/share/backgrounds location. Please help! I really want to get rid of the default images and use my images... :/ My desktop/screen in 1440x900, and most my background images are around that size. They work with my regular desktop for my account.
hello I tried to find a good subject but it was the best of mine, anyway I'll explain it here. some time I do some thing like installing a new application in Linux terminal of my office PC but it take a long time and I have to go home during its installation or configuration process that it is not good to cancel it.My current solution is abandoning the process until next day. I wanted to know is there any way to redirect an input and out put of a terminal to another one, if it works I can continue my abandoned process by ssh to my Linux office PC and redirect that terminal to my new remote sshed terminal from my home.
