it's really easy to launch an application using alt+f2 without having to worry about it while it's running but in terminal the window must remain open and you can't run anything else while the application is running e.g. firefox, rhythmbox. does anyone know how to run applications in the background while using terminal?

But now I am not able to see the icons. I've tried running this multiple times, both with using glib_close() at the end of the loop, using glib_init() and glib_close() at beginning/end, and just using glib_init(). The strange thing is these have no effect on the actual glib_get functions.

When I read a man page, the titles look black, so they are unreadable on the black background. The paragraph text looks fine, it's the headers (and anything that is *bold* I think) that looks wrong.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am running Ubuntu 10.10, and I am trying to run a java process in the background of a terminal, so I can continue to use that terminal.
Other applications will run in the background just fine, but when I run my java application, I cannot change the status of the process from "Stopped" after suspending it.
Here is my command syntax, along with some commands I have tried and their outputs:

I'm currently using Ubuntu 10.10. I frequently end up opening a few terminals and it's easier to keep track of what I'm doing if the terminals have different backgrounds or are colored differently. Is there a way already made which will start up a new terminal with a background different then one that's already open? Or a way that when the terminal is opened it will start the terminal under a profile that's not yet open? That being, when I open a terminal it opens the "first" profile. Then once I try opening a new terminal it checks and finds that I already have one with the "first" profile open and so the new terminal is opened with the "second" profile.Does anything like this feature already exist? Or something like it?

However, I'm also very much in the habit of using the nautilus-open-terminal extension for launching new terminal sessions.
I'd like nautilus-open-terminal to launch Terminator rather than gnome-terminal.
A quick search of my system and the web didn't reveal anything. i didn't find a gconf setting to control this. A quick look at the source code didn't help much either.

View 5 Replies View RelatedWhen I type (in new 10.10) soem cmdline comands like "ls -l" then some of the directories have a different fore-and background color (e.g. black on green) while the remaining other directoreis are blue on white.
Where can I find out the meaning of the diferent colors and how can I change them?
If I go to menu
Terminal->Edit->Profile Preferences->Color
then I can set only the full overall background and foreground color. But here only certain parts have a different color. the main color (black on white) is suitable. I do not use system theme.

I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed on 4 machines as base OS and I have many virtual machines of it also. I havent changed the terminal preferences on any of them, however on some computers the terminal background which is purple is not solid in that you can see what is in the background behind it. On others the background is truly solid purple; you can not see behind/through it.
Is there any way to change the terminal window for these machines that are displaying solid to the 'see-thru' way? Ive been using some ebooks and things and really like opening up vi/vim in the purple see-thru window that allows me to write and see the text in the background...however on some machines I can not do this because the terminal display is truly solid. ? All my computers have the same profile settings for terminal..

I can easily create a .sh file that will execute a command in Terminal, but as soon as it executes the terminal disappears. How do I get it to stay? My idea is to have the keyboard shortcut "ctrl+alt+del" open a .sh file with the contents "ps ax". Then it would be just like having a task manager; the terminal would open with "ps ax" already executed, and all I would have to do is kill the process number.

When i boot into kde using startx kde (usualy just using startx) all i get is a mouse, black background and a terminal screen.

View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen checking emails, many will be notifications from forum threads or other internet links. I have noticed it is very inconsistent in the way it opens them. Sometimes the browser will stay in the background so I can keep reading the emails and keep clicking on the links for reading in the browser afterwards. Other times the browser will jump to the front with every link so I have to keep switching back to Evo.
And other times it's a mix of both, seems completely random.
I'm having a issue with gwibber: the window doesn't open, but I can tell it's working because I can tweet via Me menu. Also, the "microblogging" arrow/checkbox is active in the messaging-menu.
The window opens without problems in my dad's session, so I guess that if I delete some config file in my /home it will get fixed. where are the gwibber config files? I couldn't find them =/

What do people use to run multiple applications in one terminal?
Thinking of turning my GUI into a big terminal with openbox on top and was thinking, where would I find a command-line timer tool?
And if I only had one terminal, how would I switch between applications? A 5 hour timer isn't nice if it locks up the terminal for 5 hours...

i'm new to ubuntu and i'm trying to get ettercap to work. I installed it with the command: sudo apt-get install etterca-gtk and the program was installed succesfully. But when i open the program from the terminal with: sudo ettercap -G or just open it from applications => internet : ubuntu crashes ! I can't move my mouse and can't do anything. But if I don't run the applications as root from the terminal : ettercap -G
The application opens but then I'm noty able to select an interface.

I can't open the GUI for most of the applications in system > administration and some in system > preferences. In preferences IBus preferences, Main Menu, Prodcast Preferences, Ubuntu One are affected and in administration only Disk Utility, Login Screen, Synaptic, Network Tools, Time & Date, Users & Groups, Update Manager do start (Sorry, that I state the apps that run, but this list seemed shorter to me.). There's just a notification prompted that the program is started but then nothing happens.
Further, the update manager posts a notification in the panel that "A problem occurred when checking for updates." I have the feeling that this occurred at the same time as I couldn't start the programs anymore. Up to now I wasn't able to find out what the problem is, but I didn't touch the software sources. I read threads about similar problems and there something seemed to be mixed up with the files /etc/hosts and /etc/hostname. But I checked on that and it's fine in my case.
