Ubuntu :: Make Background Image In Terminal Non-transparent

Jun 6, 2011

Does anyone know how to set the background of a terminal to be an image, and not have it slightly transparent? I've set an image as my Terminal background, but now when I open a terminal over other applications I can see those applications through my Terminal background. Is there any way to stop this from happening?

Ubuntu :: Nautilus Transparent Background Patch?

Mar 4, 2011

Nautilus transparent background patch by pr3ddi Wed Mar 02, 2011 11:10 pm here you go. a nautilus transparent background patch for everone who is not afraid to compile nautilus from source

new version available here --- http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1814132

what you will get: - a transparent nautilus desktop window in compiz, which has the usual desktop integration (icons and context menu) - a working wallpaper plugin, that can be set to show a different wallpaper on every screen - you can even use mplayer to play a video on your background

how it's done: - the nautilus desktop window is modified to render a transpart background, if a composited screen is detected - window type is changed from _NET_WM_WINDOW_TYPE_DESKTOP to _NET_WM_WINDOW_TYPE_NOTIFICATION - window is set to be keept below all other windows and the mouse wheel event is proxied to the root window the patch was developed for nautilus 2.28.1 (Ubuntu 9.10) first and then applied to nautilus 2.30.1 (Ubuntu 10.04) the only difference in 2.28.1 is that there is one more row (below set_image_properties) in the original eel-background.c

Ubuntu :: Transparent Gnome Tray Icons Have White Background?

Mar 12, 2010

This is how my Firestarter and Pidgin icons appear in the tray against a panel using an image background, even though the icons are transparent. What can be done to fix this? According to this five year old thread, GTK libraries didn't support transparency in the tray area back then, but surely this must've been fixed by now? There are even some links to bugfixes in that very thread, but I'm hesitant to apply something that old. What to do?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Kdenlive: Title Clips With Transparent Background?

Aug 23, 2010

Another hair-pulling WTF moment... All I wanted to do is add a title to the start of a screencast, nice words overlaying the screen vid. In kdenlive:

1. Project menu > Add title clip
2. Format text etc.
3. Set the title clip's background opacity to 0 = (should be?) fully transparent.
4. Put the clip on the timeline, on a higher track than the screen vid.
5. kdenlive obliterates the screen and displays the text with a black background.

There has got to be an easy way to do this. kdenlive.org documentation seems outdated (their screenshots look different from the version I got from synaptic). Do I really have to make the title in GIMP like some webpages say? I can do it, but that's idiotic. kden should be able to do it.

Ubuntu :: GDM Background - Cannot Change The Background Image To Any Of Mt .jpg Wallpaper Files And .png Files

Apr 3, 2011

I have spent the most part of 5 hours trying to fix this issue. For some reason I cannot change the background image to any of mt .jpg wallpaper files (and .png files). I've tried using the Ubuntu-Tweak application, but I end up getting a purple screen (default) or a black screen (default). So then I tried using the terminal method by making the Appearance window appear when I would log out. That works, except when I go to use my background image, it shows as a question mark for the image preview, and the icon for the file is a gray box. All while doing this my background images that I tested are all in the /usr/share/backgrounds location. Please help! I really want to get rid of the default images and use my images... :/ My desktop/screen in 1440x900, and most my background images are around that size. They work with my regular desktop for my account.

General :: Image Viewer With Transparent Window?

Aug 17, 2011

I would like to display a fully opaque image (e.g. PNG RGB8) on the desktop in an image viewer - but such that I can set the window (showing the image) to be, say, 50% transparent (so I could see through and compare with other windows below). It would be even better if the viewer just shows a "panel" instead of a "window" (i.e. I'd prefer just the image shown, possibly with a border - instead of a full blown window with menubar, titlebar etc).

I'm aware that in Compiz, it should be possible to run a plugin, and have any window you want transparent - but I was hoping for a solution (viewer) that would not be Compiz-specific (and even more preferred, if it is neither Gnome nor KDE specific - but I'm not sure that is possible).

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Restoring The Image To A RAID Volume Is Completely Transparent To The OS?

Sep 16, 2010

Right now I have a OpenSuSE 11.1 server running on a single hard drive. I want to install the HighPoint RocketRAID 1740 card and utilize RAID 10.I wanted to know if the following process would work ok:

1. Image the current hard drive using clonezilla and remove the drive.

2. Install the RAID card with 4 hard drives of the same make and model as the current drive

3. Create the logical volume

4. Restore the image to that volume

Since I am restoring the image to a RAID volume, is that completely transparent to the OS? Or do I need to do a clean install on that volume and reconfigure everything?

General :: Dynamic Transparent Terminal Needed

Feb 4, 2011

I am trying to figure out how to make my terminal emulator dynamically transparent ( see through to the action below that window - Browser, video et cettera and not just the default wallpaper) . I figured out how to make transparent but not "dynamic". I have seen people mentioned you need to enable compositing but I am unsure how to do that in Gnome. I recall from a prior use of XFCE this was an option in that WM but I can't find in Gnome or compiz (if needed)

I am running Gnome on Debian Squeeze and have installed compiz. Any direction would be appreciated. I find reading web tutorials through the terminal to be very helpful so I can practice the command line or even practice commands while watching a good video .

Ubuntu Security :: How To Make A Transparent Firewall

Apr 14, 2010

I'm involved in a project to students set up a network security training lab using vmware. I want to simulate (in a very rough way) scanning through a poorly configured router or firewall. The easiest way I can think of to simulate this is to use a linux vmware image with two virtual nic cards to act as a firewall with the attacker on the outside network and a domain controller, web server, and database server on the inside network.

I would like to start students off with a firewall script that exposes everything on their internal network to the attacker. Is there an easy way to (mis)configure iptables to do this?. The model I'm trying to replicate is something like this. Attackers were on a 10.10.x.x network, defenders were on a 192.168.x.x network. As an attacker I could nmap 192.168.x.x and see every machine and every service on the defenders side even if they moved a service to an unexpected location. how I can implement a similar configuration using a linux image as firewalls/routers in vmware?

Ubuntu :: How To Make Panels Fully Transparent

Aug 20, 2010

I found out how to make the panels fully transparent so I thought I would share it with others. When you set the panel to be transparent in the default Ambiance theme in Ubuntu 10.04, you will find that some panel items' backgrounds are not transparent, but you can make them transparent and consistent with others, following these steps:

Go to Applications (or Main Menu) > Accessories > Terminal.
Enter cp -R /usr/share/themes/Ambiance ~/.themes/
Enter gedit ~/.themes/Ambiance/gtk-2.0/gtkrc to open Ambiance's ftkrc file with gedit.
Search for this line bg_pixmap[NORMAL] = "panel_bg.png"
Comment out the line by placing a # at the beginning of the line, like this: # bg_pixmap[NORMAL] = "panel_bg.png"
Save the gtkrc file.

Go to System > Preferences > Appearance, switch to the other theme and then back to the Ambiance theme.
