I'm about to start a long research project and I think that being able to tag my files will make my life a lot easier. Basically, just as blogs tag posts with certain tags, I would like to tag documents with certain tags (ie. #secondary #2011 etc) and then search for documents by tag instead of trying to find them in folders.

On Windows I used to use a great little music player/organizer called MusicBee, which had extensive file organization capabilities; among them features like fixed length and conditional statements.Now, what I'd like to have on Ubuntu is program that organizes my music files as follows: (the colon indicating a fixed length)

[TrackNumber:2] - [Title]
So far that isn't too difficult, is it? But I do have some multi-disc albums, which I used to get easily organized as follows, using a conditional statement like "isempty()":

Thus, the big issue here is, since I've been looking for weeks now, does there exist a program that can handle fixed length as well as conditional statements to proper organize my music files?
I have a problem with Transmission. After using it for over six months without a single problem, it suddenly stopped downloading. In the torrents that do no get downloaded, I get an error message Tracker responded: Unknown error (0) in the info window, tracker tab. But there are torrents with the same tracker that don'thave a problem and get downloaded fineThe logs don't give a clue about whats wrong either.I tried downloading those torrents with Vuze and I had the same problem. What could be wrong?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running a standalone compiz (not in gnome, but just compiz, gnome-do and AWN).I use tracker to search for my stuff all the time, however, since I started using compiz without gnome, when I click results they're always opened by the browser (folders, mp3s, etc).I belive tracker uses xdg-open, and I noticed xdg-open exhibits the same behaviour.Where do I change the file associations xdg-open uses? I've found little to no documentation about it.

Not only that, when I tried to fix it I managed corrupt the dual boot I had and now cannot login into either Windows 7 or Ubuntu (besides the USB tryout version which I'm currently on now.I'll try and describe what happened in the beginning. I was rushing to get to class so I needed to shut down my Ubuntu system quickly. The quickest way was to obviously hold down the off button however later when I got home to finish off my uni assignment I couldn't boot into linux! I just get a dos command line with the word grub on it.However not only did it not fix my problem I now can't boot into anything except from this Ubuntu Live CD.

Looks like 64bit Flash is broken? -- or something is broken between Webkinz and the latest flash. Webkinz, predictably enough, works on Windows, but also works on my 32bit Linux system with the latest flash.Just wondering if any of you out there with a 64bit system could try accessing Webkinz (if you can see the Login moniker and click it, then it's working on your system).
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've created a custom Lucid installation using debootstrap, it works nice but have some problems, one of them is plymouth: it does not show the splash screen, when booting, I can only see a black screen, suddenly a green one and again black, when it is about to boot, some text messages appear and then the system starts. I'm only using X, no window manager, so I edited /etc/init/plymouth.conf and changed the start instruction from:

But it remains the same, Plymouth does not show the splash screen.

Now I'm using opensuse, I installed polipo from the repository, however, I have to manually start it by using "sudo polipo". If root privilege is not given, polipo won't work correctly.
What should I do to make it start at boot automatically?

When I try to edit my password via System>Administration>Users and Groups, it doesn't workI am able to edit my user settings. When I change my password I enter my old one and it accepts my new one. If I go to system - preferences - personal file sharing, I cannot select "share files over the network." The panel is greyed out and the message "This feature cannot be enabled because the required packages are not installed on your computer" is shown

View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed Fedora 12 yesterday. After installation, I added some packages like gstreamer*, amarok, vlc etc.
Once I rebooted, all desktop icons became invisible and I'm unable to open file browser and browse files/folders.
When I log out, I get this message saying "File Manager not responding!"
I initially thought I messed up with settings, and created a new account. Still no use.
BTW, I use Gnome Desktop Environment.
I went further and installed Fedora 12 again. And did the same package installation. And after reboot, no desktop items is visible and can't browse files/folders using file browser (nautilus).
I`m new to Ubuntu and Linux as all. First of all i have a Dell Inspiron N5010 laptop. I have a very strange problem, after the initial installation of Ubuntu 10.10 there were no problems plugging in my headphones or 2.1 sound system and listening to music. After a couple of days when trying to plug in my 2.1 sound system I noticed that there is no sound coming out of them, but the laptop speakers were working fine. Tested the sound system with another laptop and they worked well. I have checked all the settings and everything seems fine. I`m puzzled. I have the system dual boot with Win 7 if that makes any difference.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed 10.04 (clean install) on a 250G drive (partitioned to 107G for the system files). It was working fine, until I wanted to install Window$ for the use of Adobe stuff. I popped the Windows XP disc in, it loaded its files, then I tried to choose a partition for installation. There was an error saying that I can't do that, and needed to delete a partition blah blah. I thought it was too much trouble, so I quit and just wanted to use my 10.04. Booted, and it says "Error booting operating system" I WAS SHOCKED.
I tried to install grub (but don't need that right? I DO NOT want to dual boot now), but the usual method ( the sudo grub; root (hd0.0)...) doesn't work ,because something like "stage1" is missing. I tried many methods by still the same error. The reason I do not want a clean install is that I did many fixes on my 10.04 so that it would work with my EeePC 1001pxd, and I do not want to go through that again. I will be checking my email frequently on other computers if I have a chance.
I've got a multiboot system with Windozin the first drive and first partition like everyone recommends. I have several distro's and just let them install their bootloaders, but always on hd0 mbr. I installed Debian 5.0.1 this way and it wouldn't boot, so I got SGD to "fix" it, which it said was successful, but all I get is a partition doesn't exist when I try to boot. I put Debian on /dev/sdb3, I loaded Linux Rescueand mounted sdb3 and verified that its menu.lst had the right boot numbers (hd1,2). fdisk even showns /dev/sdb3 as boot as shown by the asterisk under the boot column. Should I do a complete reinstall of grub, maybe using one of the other distro's as the holder of grub? At one time they did all the grub launching as each addition was made
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've got 8.10 of Ubuntu and currently running openLDAP and have SAMBA domain using this along with the PAM changes on all machines to authenticate the logins.Now I've got a situation where I need to change the organization it currently is dc=mycomp, dc=local and I need to change the "local" part.
I thought that I could slapcat it out then change all dc=local to dc=blech and then reload the LDAP database. Then go around and change all the ldap configuration points to match.I don't think its as simple as change the base dn and everything below that will update.

I was wondering if in Gnome you can organize icons by Name/Type/View/Size and if you could organize them from Top to Bottom, Left to Right, etc?

I prefer it this way and also KDE has it.

I have a choice of Audio player/Cd burner/Media editing/Video player/Volume control.and then each application is in their respective categories.On my OpenSuse 11.4, I have the same applications as the 11.3 32 bit system, but my organization is different.
