View 2 Replies View RelatedDespite the history file is unique (~/.bash_history) I see that the multiple bash processes run on different windows are not all updating that file. I presume that the bash is not taking into account this possibility (multiple bashes on multiple windows) and writes thus the history file in a simple straightforward way. This would mean that a number of history entries are lost. I've tried to find information but had no luck so far.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was just testing specifying limit on file size to a user and have added the following to /etc/security/limits.conf bob soft fsize 100 This basically should have said not to allow bob to create anyfile greater than 100Kb in size.
But the interesting thing is, if bob already has any file which is greater than 100Kb in size, it even doesn't allow to log him into the system both from console and SSH. Also nothing is logged in logs.. How do I configure it so that, bob can login to the system even though he has any file greater than 100Kb (but doesn't allow him to create file which are greater than 100Kb) ??

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have some Flex and Java files which can be compiled with JDK1.5. My server was already loaded with 1.4 (at path /usr/bin/java) and our sys admin(I dont know why) copied another JDK, JDK 1.5 at path /usr/java/jdk1.5.0_16/. It seems very easy to use this java. Just set the path in .bash_profile. I did it and now if I run which java I still see the path for java 1.4 not java 1.5. Am I doing something wrong? Following is actual entry from bash_profile
Code:
PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin

JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/jdk1.5.0_16/
export PATH JAVA_HOME
I selected 'Fire' from the Desktop effects list and got an error message saying that it "could not be activated".Why? Does it conflict with another effect? Is there a way to fix this?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI want to ssh, scp, git fetch, etc. without a password. I saw the previous questions, and closed ones regarding this issue, but the suggestion seems to be to use ssh keys. However, after setting up ssh keys, I am still asked for my password (it's not asking for my private key password; it's asking for my login password). How am I supposed to set this up so that it only uses my private key for authentication?

I was using dd_rescue to make a copy of a drive with a corrupt and unfixable Partition Table. I was a fool, and had a drive mounted to /media/Storage, but ran the backup to /media/storage.
Thus, dd_rescue completely filled my primary drive before informing me that there was a problem.
I don't really trust myself with command line work, so I foolishly sudo'ed nautilus and deleted the folder /media/storage.
Unfortunately, I didn't realize it, but the available space on the drive still read 0bytes.
I tried Terminal work to do a sudo apt-get clean command, but for some inane reason, the laptop screen won't support the display setting for the Terminal login, so I just had to hope that I was doing it right.
I wasn't, and decided to try working from a Live CD so I could see what I was doing.
the folder /root/.Trash/ doesn't exist on Ubuntu's install drive, and I can't figure out why the properties of the drive say "contents: 241310 files, 3.7 GB" but also "Total capacity: 52.8 GB. Free space: 0 bytes"
Any suggestions on how I can get this to shake out?
I got a problem about network proxy setting. With the graphics setting interface, I set auto proxy with the URL address but it is weird that the setting only work with eth1(wireless), doesn't work with etho(wired). however my wireless driver is always a problem for Linux. i also tried export http_proxy= XXXXX:8080 it still doesn't work at all.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 which works with Skype, Cheese, Ekiga, and Flash on Ubuntu 9.10 with no problems. (With Ubuntu 8.04, the video worked with all of these but Skype (couldn't test Skype as it was not available) but not the audio, which was one of the reasons I upgraded). It does not work with Flash in Ubuntu 10.04. Flash does not detect the camera though it does detect the microphone (and says it works, haven't tested it yet). It works (video and audio) with Skype and Ekiga. The video works with cheese and I can record my own voice with Sound Recorder off the webcam's mic.
I have looked at the webcam community documentation [URL]..and have visited Adobe's site [URL].. to click on "always allow". But that does not work either. Flash simply does not see the camera. The version of flash on both computers is the same (10,1,53,64).
I have a two hours long home video with I edited in a video editor program. I'd like to burn it to DVD, but first I need to export it to an mpeg file. Cinelerra doesn't allow me to render to mpeg, instead it offers .avi or .dv - problem is that the resulting file size is enormous. (i.e. 1 minute of .avi = 1.2GB! or around 500MB when I output to .dv) What file format would be best to render to and at the same time not to get an insanely big file? I'd like to keep it under 1GB if possible.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running fedora 13 on a Dell Latitude E6500. It's a dual 64-bit system.
It was working, but then I tried to swap caps lock and control.
I used:
System->Preferences->Keyboard
Layouts->USA->Options
Then, under Control Key Position, I selected swap caps lock and control.
Now, my keyboard won't work in the Keyboard Preferences test area or in any other window or when the screen-lock comes on.
I tried logging out. I tried rebooting. I tried deleting my .gnome2 directory. Nothing seems to work. I can use the keyboard on other accounts, so the keyboard is not the problem.
I am trying to get a Logitech Webcam (not Quickcam) Pro 9000 to work with my SUSE 11.2 installation (specifically trying to get it to work with Skype 2.1). I am using the KDE environment. I've been reading the many posts and seem to be getting the point that I need to install the UVC driver from the webcam driver repo. However, the link I found to the repo seems to be for SUSE 11.1...?
Anyway, here is what I have done so far:I ran the following commands and got the following output:

So I have a Logitech 9000 web cam installed and working (again) with Skype. That's great when I want to video chat with family, but that's all I can do with it. I would like to record some movies using my web cam but I can't because of the following reasons:
1. I can't find an application for Linux that actually works. So far they all fail to work for a variety of reasons.
2. The ones that sort of work, don't allow me to do what I want, record a video with my web-cam and save the file for future use or distribution.
I just want a simple application that allows me to click on record, stop recording and save. Why isn't there anything around that can do that? Seriously, this is something I have been looking for since, 2001. And so far I have only found one application that kind of worked, but it's no longer developed and I can't find it anymore.
[Code]...
So let's recap. In another thread I am trying to get .wmv files to play (they work on one system but not another?) and none of the applications for web cams work as I want. Oh, and wine? It's a joke, not one application I have tried to run with wine works. The either just don's start OR they start but half the components never paint and it runs like a flea in frozen molasses.
I am a bit frustrated and rather tired of not being able to easily do what Windows folk can do with relative ease. Something wrong with that. And I haven't even begun to tack text to speech yet.
Wubi doesn't let me set the swap file size, so on installation it only creates a swap file of a few hundred megabytes. Because of this, i cannot hibernate my netbook (eeePC 1005HA), which has 2 GB of RAM.
Creating a 2 GB swap file alongside of the original one using the tutorial here did work, but hibernate doesn't seem to work with it. For this reason i thought increasing the original swap's size instead of creating more would be a way to solve my problem.
I am using Ubuntu 9.10. I was installing network simulator 2. After installation I get the following message.
Please put /home/administrator/Downloads/ns-allinone-2.34/bin:/home/administrator/Downloads/ns-allinone-2.34/tcl8.4.18/unix:/home/administrator/Downloads/ns-allinone-2.34/tk8.4.18/unix
into your PATH environment; so that you'll be able to run itm/tclsh/wish/xgraph.

My friend suggested that it is something to do with .bashrc file. I fund files like .bash.bashrc.
I have a Canoscan LiDE 30 scanner which works fine in Linux. I haven't used it in months, and never since moving from Jaunty x86_64 to Fedora 11 x86_64. This evening I suddenly need to scan two pages to send to someone via e-mail, and the recipient is desperate to receive them. Naturally, Xsane has decided this is the moment to screw me.
The problem: I cannot figure out how to tell Xsane that the page size is 8.5 11. It insists on scanning only the left side, 3.99 x 11. I cannot find a page size anywhere in any of the buttons.
In Preview I once got it to scan the entire page, but could not figure out how to save the image to file. Subsequently I have not been able to figure out how I did it. In any event, scanning from the small main window always scans 3.99 x 11. Adjusting the scan area manually in the Preview window allows me to change the size area in the small main window to 8.5 x 11, but when I then scan from the small main window it reverts to 3.99 x 11.
I have scanned the document a hundred times at least, each time trying different buttons, but nothing has succeeded in getting the full page.
Are there software that can split big file size into small file size in Linux?

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I add some path in .bashrc by commenting out old path and adding new one like this:
#EXPORT HOME_PLAY=/home/gem/old_play
EXPORT HOME_PLAY=/home/gem/play
EXPORT PATH=$PATH:HOME_PLAY
After saving above changes, I enter the command: source ~/.bashrc Now if I do echo $PATH, the path shows both the old PLAY_HOME and new PLAY_HOME. This is really bad and messes up a lot of things in my project. This problem only goes away if I logout or reboot, a rather very long process. What is happening is that the old path is added to new path element and the old path includes the old path element you want to remove.
