CentOS 5 :: Get System-config-samba To 'see' Winbind Users And Groups

Jul 14, 2009

I have a Samba File Server that can authenticate users in my Windows AD to log into the server. Anyways, I have a good amount of Windows Admins on staff but our org wants to cut budget so our first "slash" as it were is cutting down the actual Windows based File Servers.So my question is, now that I have this test server up and authenticating for logins using Windbind....is there a way I can get system-config-samba to "see" winbind users and groups so that file servers can still be "point and click" for my Windows Admins?

Debian :: GUI App - Installing System Config Samba

May 7, 2013

I use this GUI app a lot when I was using Ubuntu. Very simple to use. I want to use it in my new Debian 7 xfce install. My understanding is that I would have to build a deb from source to allow me to use this app? If this is the case, what is the best (easiest) way to do this. I saw some videos in YouTube but I'm not sure if things have changed with the new Debian 7. I have never used Debian before so if possible, go easy on me...

Server :: Samba Config - Can't Get The Public Read-write Dir To Work

Aug 21, 2010

I would like to set up three directories-

1) RW public directory
2) R-public, RW-me
3) Private dir (my /home/me)

BTW, I set all file permissions (recursively) to 777 until I can get this to work...

1) So far I have got 1 samba share working Read only with the following: [Music]

[Code]...

Guests can read it okay but user 'JoeBleaux' can't write to it...

2) I can't get the public read-write dir to work, again, it can be read by everyone but no one can write to it. Here's my broken config for this share: [Uploads]

[Code]...

3) I can't get the private dir to work. Here's my broken config for this share: [HomeDir]

CentOS 5 Server :: Setting Up Relaxed Samba Config

May 29, 2011

I've got a situation where I would normally use NFS, but cannot. So in it's place I need to use a samba share (even though it's linux -> linux). I need it completely open and world writeable as if I had done an rw in an NFS export. I thought I had it as when logged in as a user I can edit delete etc. however the apache user seems to be struggling with creating files. Here's my smb.conf as it stands.

[global]
workgroup = WGRP
server string = Samba Server Version %v
security = user
passdb backend = tdbsam
unix extensions = no

[tmp]
comment = Temp Directory
path = /var/tmp
public = yes
guest ok = yes
writeable = yes
browseable = yes

[sites]
comment = Sites Directory
path = /var/www/sites
public = yes
guest ok = no
write list = siteusr
writeable = yes
create mask = 0777
browseable = no
security mask = 0777
directory security mask = 0777

Note that the drive is mapped as user siteusr. What I can do to open it up more?

Server :: Some Options In System-config-samba Dialog Are Not Working Properly?

Apr 13, 2010

I am using Fedora 12. I have the following problem, when i working with system-config-samba dialog:I add the new user on the server:as following:

Unix username: vova
Windows username:test

As described in Customisation Guide for Red Hat 9: "If the user has a different username on a Windows machine and will be logging into the Samba serverfrom the Windows machine, specify that Windows username in the Windows Username field."So i logged from the Windows machine not under test(Windows username) but under vova.And i logged in without the problem. However it seems that samba should check windows username=test (as have written in samba-config) and ask an password for different users. And additionally, if samba check the currect user in Windows itself and verify it with Unix user, what for we need write the Windows username in samba config? I don't understand

CentOS 5 :: Running System-config-boot In 5.4?

I'm installing CentOS for the first time to run mythtv on (I previously used Fedora, but the new version cycle was too quick). As part of the instructions I'm using, I am told to run system-config-boot (to ensure that centosplus kernel is loaded on boot). The problem is, I cant find this option in my installation of CentOS. Another option I have is to manually edit the grub.conf file, but I'm not sure exactly how I should edit it.

CentOS 5 :: Status Of System-config-netboot?

Jun 29, 2010

I am very interested in using CentOS as a server for diskless PXE booting and was wondering if this was a possibility. I have a working DHCP/TFTP/HTTP system set up and going and I can get my client machine to boot a linux image without any problems. Ideally I would like the diskless machines to be able to immediately load an image through PXE and store their own filesystems on the server through the use of NFS.I heard about system-config-netboot and got very excited because it sounded like something that would help me set up a diskless system. However, after doing some research I have heard from many that it is generally buggy and unlikely to work. When I tried using it I got the error: "The diskless directory must be NFS exported and contain a boot sub-directory"Even though my diskless directory WAS nfs exported and most definitely contained a boot sub-directory. Does anyone have any advice on using this tool, or using CentOS as a server for diskless clients?

CentOS 5 Server :: Samba Doesn't Create User Profiles On The Fly

Nov 20, 2010

I've got Samba server running on CentOS box. Everything works fine when I use "path" parameter, but I think Samba should create /home dirs for clients automatically. It should look like this:

comment = Home Directory of '%u'
valid users = @"Domain Group"
browseable = no
writable = yes

[Code]....

When I explicitly declare "path" param, it works ok. But I need PERSONAL home dir for every user separately, not one dir for everyone.

CentOS 5 Networking :: OpenVPN Doesn't Work On CentOS 5.3 With Windows Client?

Jun 27, 2009

This will be a little long (having read Phil's 'how to ask questions' FAQ). I'm trying to get OpenVPN working between my CentOS server and some Windoze laptops running XP. There seems to be plenty of sample
config files available, but to date, none of them have worked for me. Pulling out my trusty Wireshark, I've found some clues,

BACKGROUND:
My local subnet (NAT'ed by my gateway router) is 192.168.52.x. My router has been configured with a conduit (port-forward) for port 1194 (the standard OpenVPN port), which points towards my CentOS server.The CentOS server is .52.112, and the supplicant is .52.110. I have tried the lient both inside and outside my local subnet, with no difference in events or outcomes.

I'm only using X, no window manager, so I edited /etc/init/plymouth.conf and changed the start instruction from:

CentOS 5 :: Guest OS In XEN 5.4 Doesn't Work?

Jul 13, 2010

1) Installed Cent os 5.4 in my system (name it as "guest os").

2) Downloaded the full kernel source, and patched the vanilla kernel to export symbol table (2 line change) [URL] (Yes I know that kernel should not be touched, if touched you should not seek help here . but I felt I didnt do any big change in kernel there). Besides we unset the config_smp & config_preempt parameter to make the kernel as not SMP and not preemptive .

3) Then compiled and booted with the new kernel 2.6.18, everything went fine . Now my gust os box is loading fine and I dont have any issue .

So now I need to install this above machine as guest OS in one more XEN machine cent os 5.4 (name it as "xen os").

So we created the image out of the above box "guest os" and added it as VM in xen os . But while booting it always hangs under some error like "/usb device sort of thing" (I dont have the screen where it hangs, but I do have the equivalent xen log from XEN OS linked to [URL] .

1) what the error is, and what need to be changed in my guest os build .

2) In general I am new to this VM and XEN installation, to be frank I am completely zero . Does changing the native os 5.4 to guest os need any change in kernel or something.

3) Does this case possible, install plain cent os in xen machine. After then patch the kernel in VM and boot with that . I guess it should not be possible ...

4) If possible guide me to some documentation where I can learn few basics over this.

I was rushing to get to class so I needed to shut down my Ubuntu system quickly. The quickest way was to obviously hold down the off button however later when I got home to finish off my uni assignment I couldn't boot into linux! I just get a dos command line with the word grub on it.However not only did it not fix my problem I now can't boot into anything except from this Ubuntu Live CD.
