Ubuntu Networking :: Connect 10.04 Desktop System Wirelessly To Another Desktop
Jul 7, 2010
I am trying to connect an Ubuntu 10.04 desktop system wirelessly to another desktop that is directly connected to a cable modem via dlink wireless router and ethernet card. I have not been able to connect on the second system (Ubuntu) to the wireless router.

After spending several months coming up with ideas (and ultimately failing), I have found the easiest and simplest way to connect your Ubuntu desktop (or laptop w/o a wireless adapter/card) to the Internet using only a Linksys Wireless Range Expander and an Ethernet cord.
YOU WILL NEED:
Linksys Wireless Range Expander (WRE54G)
Ethernet cable
Linksys wireless router (that is providing your home/office with wireless Internet) The WRE54G can be purchased online through various websites, including eBay. They run anywhere between $10 and $40, but it's going to be cheaper than a USB Wireless Adapter (and no software needs to be installed, making it universal for most Linux distros).

a server at work has been accessed through the desktop environment as root. I know this is a risk and since I have never done it before I was wondering if there are any files created by the desktop that could compromise the system and how could I clean it up.

I'm not completely new to ubuntu, I've been using it for about 6 months, my laptop, suddenly decided to no longer let me connect wirelessly, it was mid pidgin conversation, I couldn't even tick the box to enable wireless. So I read in one of these posts that one person had to reinstall their wireless driver to get it working again. so I uninstalled my driver (Broadcom STA) however when I went to activate it, all I get is the error message installation failed and to look for log "/var/log/jockey.log" and here I admit that I'm not knowledgeable about computers since I'm not sure where to look for the log and also what the log would mean.

I upgraded Ubuntu to 11.04 I can NO longer connect wirelessly using my BCM4312 WLAN Card. It connected with no problems before dist upgrade using Ubuntu 10.04. Im really not sure why I cannot connect. I cannot even see my router in edit wireless connections settings. I can however see my neighbours routers who are using WPA2 encryption. But I cannot see my router.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled The Broadcom STA proprietry wireless driver several times using Additional drivers. This did not fix my issue.
I am connected by ethernet at the moment so I do have internet connection.

I have been trying to wirelessly connect to my network for weeks now. My netgear dongle is fully working. I have installed the driver using ndiswrapper. I can see my network and signal is excellent; everything is working perfectly. When I try to connect it thinks about it but never connects. The password is fine; it works great with other computers. decided to have a go with wicd, so got rid of the Gnome network manager and installed wicd. Adaptor and wicd appear to be working brilliantly EXCEPT I cannot connect. wicd tells me its a bad password. Password fine because it works brilliantly with every other device I connect to my network. If I remove security from network, it tells me it cannot get address, even though it sailed passed that with no problem when there was security. I have searched the internet for a solution to this problem time and time again. Lots of people seem to be having this problem, but no one knows the solution. Is there a solution? It happens with both Ubuntu 10.04 LTS v1 v2 and Ubuntu 11.04. What the heck is going on. This happens with WPA WEP and anything else I try to use

I'm trying to configure my machine to allow remote desktop connections from outside my home network so i can connect at school, work etc. However, when setting up my remote desktop it says "Your desktop is only reachable over the local network. Others can access your computer using the address localhost." (see attached screenshot) My other linux machine has the same problem, but provides the IP address, is there something i'm missing?

is there any apps compatible with remote desktop? So my xubuntu system can connect to my windows system using the existing set up for remote desktop... or do I need to install a new client/server or thing on both systems? I do not mind doing that if you can recommend a good client/server but would prefer to just connect to the existing remote desktop if possible

I have two computers. The first computer has windows xp in it and is a member of the local lan with ip address 192.168.11.21. The second is my laptop having ubuntu 8.10.Both these computers are connected to each other via the broadband router which assigns ips 192.168.1.3 to my laptop and 192.168.1.1 to my desktop. I am able to browse the lan of 192.168.11.x via the desktop and I want the same possible on my laptop whose only connection is through the router to the desktop. Is there any way I can do it?

I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on a friends computer when Windows died on it, and though she has had relatively few problems with it, she still occasionally has problems that are really hard to impossible to fix over the phone. She is also not very knowledgeable with computers, so I was trying to guide her through setting up so I could connect to her remotely and try to figure things out, but I cannot get it to work.
I personally don't use Ubuntu on my computer, I use openSUSE and KDE so that does add to the problem, though I have used Ubuntu and Gnome a lot in the past.
I had her go to remote desktop settings and allow connections from other computers and allow other users to control the desktop, and at first I had her require confirmation and a password but it didn't work without it either. When I try to connect, it just hangs for a while then times out. I tried using KRDC and just VNC in the terminal with the same result.
There should be nothing on my side preventing a connection, but I am not positive. I am not very familiar with remote desktop outside of a LAN either. I am just trying to connect using her IP address, I don't know if there is anything else I need to include. Is there maybe some other setting that needs to be changed or maybe her DSL modem/router is blocking me though I don't know why it would, especially since P2P programs work fine.

I'm wondering here with my 64-bit 9.10 why my wireless does not seem to work with my Zonet wireless USB adapter. The adapter is working and it detects my network (a WPA) and attempts to connect, and after about 20 seconds or so, I am disconnected.

I have my main box, Ubuntu 10.04lts, and I am trying to use remote desktop viewer to see the desktop on a Windows XP machine. The machines are side by side The Ubuntu box is hardwired to my network router, and the XP machine is connected via wireless. Both get to the internet fine, and I can ping the Ubuntu box from the XP box. But, I cannot ping the XP box from the Ubuntu box, and Remote Desktop Viewer won't establish a connection to the VNC server I have running on the XP box.

I'm not very good with computers. If this isn't possible, how would I go about connecting the desktop to the internet?

I have a dell d800 laptop using a hp 802abg nic and it doesn't properly initialize until gnome desktop is loadedI'm using 128 bit key and a hidden network name.I would like to have wireless networking running before /etc/rc.local is executed at boot time to connect to nfs shares.after gnome is loaded and I login to user account, wireless networking starts and connects. When I set inittab to 3 and boot machine, ifconfig and iwcfg report card doesn't exist, when I then telinit 5 and start x/gnome card gets properly setupis it possible the card doesn't get initialize3ed because the network key needs to be entered in a file somewhere that the boot sequence can access it and init the card properly?
